Simon Marmion, A Choir of Angels
Saint Luke the Evangelist writing in his study, illumination from the Book of Hours, use of Cambrai (c. 1490s) [BnF Gallica, Ms-1185, F. 36v] The manuscript is also known as the Hours of Boussu (Heures de Boussu in French), as it was allegedly made for Isabelle de Lalaing, Lady of Boussu in Hainaut (modern Belgium).
The book is richly decorated by the so-called Master of Antoine Rolin, a follower (likely an apprentice) of Simon Marmion, whose style is very visible in many of the illuminations.
In the Christian tradition, St. Luke is known as the maker of the very first icon of Mary (and so we see it in the room), and in turn the mirror is one of Mary’s attributes (she is Speculum sine macula).
