Camp Granite Falls sits on the edge of the forest, tucked away in the wilderness away from the bustling life of the cities and towns of Sim Nation. Despite its… unique origins, the camp has been opened for summer camp each year, promising campers a fun summer away from parents. Despite its exuberant wildlife and picturesque views, the Camp breathes with something sinister hidden away…
The early afternoon summer air is warm and inviting, the serene, glassy lake urging you to cool off in its refreshing waters. Birds melodically sing in the branches of the evergreen trees—at least until the hum of tires, turning into a loud crunching, as cars wind down the gravel road, sending the birds flying from their perches. The cars pass a weathered wooden sign at the camp’s entrance. The sign has surely seen better days, with old, chipped paint and vines growing over the carved name. Over the gentle roar of the car engines, there is a creaking as the wind rustles through the trees, creating an unsettling feeling over an otherwise bright and summery day. Over the years, the camp has been repaired and repainted, but there is still something ominous lurking in the trees around.
DAY ONE, Early afternoon — 8 Sims Left
The counselors pull into the makeshift lot in front of Bearclaw Lodge, a large, rustic cabin that has been around far longer than any of them. One by one, the counselors step out and make their way to the front picnic tables where the head counselor, Zachary Brooks is waiting for them. They’ve all arrived a week before the campers to get things ready and shipshape for the summer, and as they all see one another, there is a light heartened reunion between the group—save for one face who was not only new to being a counselor, but new to the town entirely.
Zachary sits atop one of the tables, dressed in typical outdoor camp attire, with a big smile excitedly spread across his face. “It’s that time of year again! Welcome back to Granite Falls—it’s great to see you all.” Zachary turns to Troy Peters, who dons a jersey and is kicking a volleyball at his feet. “Troy! New court and net just got put in.”
“I saw on the way in—you wanna go test it out?”
“Oh you’re going down this year dude.” Zach turns his attention to the camp tech genius, Milo, who they all call ‘The Tuner’ because of his uncanny ability to always be able to magically tune anything just the right way. “Milo, good to see you as always!”
Milo nods in agreement. “You too, Z. You guys remember my cousin Rebecca, right? She was a counselor last year…”
Rebecca smiles sweetly, showing more excitement than her cousin as she leans against one of the tables. She moved to the area last year from Chestnut Ridge, and Milo had invited her to be a counselor for the summer, hoping to have another comrade at camp. She loved it so much she knew she would be back this summer. “Hi y’all! It’s great to see you again!”
As the sun sets against the trees, the forest animals begin to wake up, ready to hunt through the night. The counselors--save for Lana--gather around the campfire, listening to the crackling of the first and the hum of the mosquitoes' buzzing.
Lana stands by the lake, staring at her reflection. A gust of wind ruffles the trees and ripples the water below her. For a moment, she swears she sees a face next to her in the water. When she looks up, no one is there.
From the campfire the group gets ready to start telling stories. Cody leaps up, excited at the opportunity to tell his favorite story. "Lana! Ever heard of the legend of Granite Falls?"
Milo rolls his eyes, "Not this bogus story again..."
Lana makes her way to the group, eager to get away from the lake. "...no. What is it?"
"Well, the camp was founded in the 60s. It was like this place for kids to explore nature and make friends--totally wholesome right? But the legend has it that the camp is much darker...."
"What, like the time that kid disappeared and was never found? Please... That's just a story we tell the campers to keep them in their cabins at night." Roxy snorts, having heard this story many times before.
Troy pokes at her playfully, "You're not scared, are you Roxy?"
With a cocked brow, Roxy crosses her arms seriously, "Of one of Cody's ghost stories? Please, as if."
Lana isn't the only one who's never heard the legend, because Rebecca was on the end of the tree stump eagerly awaiting the story. "Well do they know what happened to him?"
"Well, according to the legend... They say that years ago, before this place was a summer camp, it was a small settlement. One night, a young boy named Tommas went missing in the woods. The search party combed the forest for days, but they only found his shoes... neatly placed at the edge of the lake, as if he had walked into the water and disappeared.
"Some people said that Tommy was taken by the woods themselves. Others whispered about an unseen presence--something that lures children into the dark, something ancient and hungry.
"It wasn't long after Tommy's disappearance that things at the settlement went horribly wrong. Livestock would vanish overnight. Fires would start in the dead of night, burning homes to the ground. But worst of all--people began hearing Tommy's voice. His soft cries echoed through the trees, calling them by name...beckoning them into the woods."
Lana can't help but ask, "Did anyone else go missing?"
Cody raises a brow, happy to continue the story, "The legend says one by one, settlers would wake in the night, saying they heard Tommy outside their window, calling for help. And when they went to investigate, they'd never come back..."
Cutting the silence, Milo buts in, "Great story, Cody."
"Is it a story?" Cody retorts, "The campgrounds were built years later, after the settlement mysteriously vanished. But the woods...they remember. Every few summers, campers swear they hear footsteps following them, or worse... whispers. The same whispers that drove people mad--Soft at first...calling your name...begging for you to follow him into the trees. But when you do, his voice changes--it becomes a scream. A scream that fills your head, so loud you can't hear anything else.
"They say those who hear it lose their minds. And the ones who go looking for him? They're never seen again..."
A silence settles over the crackling of the fire. Lana can't help by stare nervously into the flame. Roxy stands up and claps her hands, "Nice way to welcome the new girl, Cody! Come on guys, let's get inside and get some sleep."
Autumn, Rebecca, and Zachary jump at the idea. "That sounds like a great idea!" Autumn exclaims, starting towards the cabins.
"Goodnight boys!" Rebecca calls out sweetly as she heads into the cabin.
The girls get situated in their respective bunks. Lana's remained silent since the story ended, something that Lana had noticed. As she crawls into one of the top bunks, Rebecca calls down to her. "Hey, Lana, don't let Roxy get under your skin... we're all glad you're here!"
Lana is already cozy in her bed, facing the wall and hoping to get some half decent sleep. "Thank you Rebecca..." She replies tiredly, "Where'd she get off to anyways?" Lana asks, noticing that Roxy is in fact no where to be found in the cabin.
Autumn scoffs, "Who knows. She and my brother are probably out causing trouble. She'll be fine." She replies, turning over into the bed.
Just as Autumn predicted, Roxy and Cody had hung back from the group as they all migrated into the cabins. The two sit next to the dimming fire, finally enjoying time alone.
"You're not afraid of ghosts, are you Rox? It's kinda dark out here...lotta shadows...."
Roxy smirks, "Very funny Cody--you can't scare me... Ghosts aren't real. Besides, I've go you to protect me."
As the two sit against the sound of the forest, there's the distant sound of footsteps crunching in the wood, too heavy to be any of the counselors.
Zachary leads the crew inside of Bearclaw Lodge. The main room is rustic and smells deeply of the pine surrounding the camp. There’s a radio playing static that might be confused for music, if you listen hard enough.
Clearing his throat, Zachary begins to speak, “Okay, so—”
Rebecca pipes in excitedly, “Wait, Zachary, did we finally get the radio and television working this year?”
“They’ve always worked… there’s just no radio signal out here.” Zachary rolls his eyes, “I don’t know why we keep them though—no one ever uses them.” He clears his throat again as Rebecca scrunches her nose in disappointment over the television. “alright guys, let’s go over the basics. Campers arrive noon on Saturday and I want everything in place by the. Take today to get settled—we’ll start prepping tomorrow—”
Once again, Zachary is interrupted as the door to the lodge swings open. Cody Harrington enters the room, laughing at something clever he must have done or some electorate prank he set up.
“Well nice of you to join us, Cody.”
“Anytime Zach—I was just checking out the lake shed and canoes.”
Zachary raises a brow, “What were you up to in there. That’s supposed to be locked.”
“Oh don’t worry, it was.” Cody plops the keys to shed on the table with a mischievous grin, “it’s grody in there dude.”
“Good to know. You and Autumn can work on cleaning it and the dock tomorrow.” Zachary replies with a slightly smug smile.
Autumn narrows her eyes at her brother, “Nice one, Cody—we’re on dock duty…”
“The rest of you, let’s make sure the campers’ cabins are are all ready. Oh and chef doesn’t get here ‘till Monday, so for now, it’s ramen and pb&j’s!”
