“He’s here,” Josie cried when someone knocked on their door. She ran towards the door only stopping when Evan called for her to stop.
“I’ll get the door,” Evan pulled down on his sweater, heart pounding in his chest. He gave Jayden a shaky grin as he walked towards the door. He knew who would be on the other side. Their new son.
Opening the door he saw Chris and Hayle both grinning with a young boy standing in front of them. For a moment all Evan could do was stare before managing to smile down at the boy, the same boy he’d seen at the market, “Ryan, welcome to our home.”
“You’re, you’re,” Ryan stammered, stunned that the couple he met at the market were going to be his new parents. He looked up at Chris then over to Hayle as if asking them if this was real.
Nodding Hayle stepped back “go ahead meet your new family.”
“My…” he swallowed the words sticking in his throat as emotion threatened to choke the air from him. “My … new … family?”
Josie stepped around Evan grinning at the young boy “I’m Josie. Your new big sister and you’re my little brother and we’re going to be the bestest of friends.” She threw her arms around him, making him grunt in surprise. Just as quickly she was giving Chris and Hayle hugs too. “I knew you could do it. I wanted a brother and you made it happen.”
Hayle grinned down at her tilting her chin upwards “Chris and I helped. A lot of others helped too.”
“Can I thank them?” she asked “If I made a thank you card, could you give it to them? All the people who helped bring my brother home in time for Christmas.”
“If you make the card I’ll be happy to deliver it,” he patted her head happy to have had a share in making this adoption happen.
“Can I help?” Ryan asked somewhat timidly.
“Of course,” she took him by the hand, dragging him inside the house. “I have tons of colors and Papa can help us spell the words and stuff.”
Unable to express his feelings of thankfulness in words Evan simply gave Hayle and Chris a hug hoping it was enough. “Do you want to come in?” he asked, stepping back “thanks to all your baking we have plenty of Christmas cookies and we just made some hot chocolate.”
“We can’t stay long,” Chris said stepping inside, “but we’d love some cookies.”
Stepping inside they found Ryan staring at Jayden standing as if frozen to the floor. “You remember me?” Jayden asked unsure what was happening or why Ryan looked so stunned to see him.
Nodding Ryan looked over his shoulder. “I didn’t think my wish would come true. I almost didn’t make it because Bobby told me Santa only grants wishes to good boys and girls.”
“I’m kind of glad you made that wish,” Evan said, stepping towards him and putting a hand on his shoulder. “Without your wish we wouldn’t have gotten ours either.”
“Really?” Ryan asked, looking up at him.
“Uh huh,” Josie spoke before Evan could. “We lost our baby and we needed you to complete our family.”
“Oh,” Ryan turned to Jayden “you gave me hope that I could still have my wish. You said that sometimes trying to be good is what mattered more than being good all the time. I tried really hard to be good.”
“See,” Jayden’s eyes locked onto the boy his arms opened a little wider as if inviting the boy into them “It worked. You’re now part of our family and we’re so happy to have you.”
A strained sob tore from Ryan’s lips as he ran forward, falling into Jayden’s arms. Jayden pulled him into his lap, holding him tight as the boy’s body shook with his sobs. “It’s ok now,” Jayden said gently “you’re home now. We’re your family now.”
“I never have to leave?” he cried against Jayden’s sweater.
“Not unless you want to,” he said, “the choice is yours. Do you want us to be your family?”
Sitting back Ryan gazed at him in wonder. He turned to look at Hayden and Chris who both nodded at him. He looked towards Evan who smiled at him making him feel warm and secure and Josie already said she wanted him to be her brother. Turning back to Jayden he grinned through the tears “yes I want you to be my family.” He threw his little arms around Jayden’s neck whispering in his ear “thank you for wanting me. No one ever did before.”
Wrapping his arms around him Jayden sighed, a feeling of warmth and coming home seemed to envelope him. “You have no idea how much you’re wanted but we plan on showing you every day.”
Once Chris and Hayle had left taking with them the thank you cards they had made for everyone involved in the adoption Josie moved towards the tree. “Is it time to put our special ornaments on the tree now?”
“What do you think?” Evan asked Jayden who was once again holding Ryan in his lap.
“I think it’s a perfect time,” he agreed. “Who would like to go first?” He looked towards Josie who usually started the tradition every year.
Shaking her head she picked up the wrapped box “I think Ryan should start.” She handed him the box to open.
He sat for a moment just looking at the box, his fingers moving over the ribbon without opening it. “What am I supposed to do?” he asked.
“Would you like to tell him?” Jayden asked as Evan joined them on the couch.
“We each have an ornament that’s just for us. It’s special.” She explained “it’s like us on the tree. We find the perfect spot and it makes a whole. We’re family so we couldn’t do it until you got here because now our family’s complete.” She looked towards Evan to make sure she said it right.
Nodding Evan smiled at her, then at Ryan. “Jayden picked out that ornament the day we were at the market. We didn’t know we had been approved to adopt you but we hoped we would be.”
“Wow,” he stared at the box still unopened in his lap. “You wanted me even then? Even though I lost control and knocked you down?”
“Even then,” Jayden nodded, “we knew you only needed the right help. The right family to love and support you. We hoped we’d get the chance to be those people. Each of us in this room made a wish to make us a family.”
Wiping the backs of his hands across his eyes Ryan carefully pulled on the ribbon. “I want to remember this moment forever,” he said as he picked at the tape to open the box.
“Just tear it open,” Josie encouraged growing impatient.
“But I want to keep it,” he looked up, “I can keep it, can’t I?”
“Of course you can,” Evan assured him. “I’ll give you a keepsake box so you can keep it in as well.” Evan got up to get a box for the boy knowing he’d replace it with one that was more decorative later.
“Oh,” Ryan’s eyes grew large when he finally opened the box and saw the pretty ornament inside. Picking it up, he held it to the light “what does it say?”
“It says,” Jayden was looking at the boy in his lap instead of the ornament
“Like a gift,” Ryan asked, holding the ornament.
“Can you help me?” he asked, eyes glued on the tree.
“I sure can,” Evan said standing up “just tell me where and I’ll lift you up.
Ryan looked as if he wanted to say something but simply nodded following Evan to the tree. “I want to put it there,” he pointed at a spot three quarters of the way up.
“That’s the perfect spot for it,” Evan lifted him up and watched Ryan carefully hung his ornament on the tree.
He stepped back to survey it. “It’s perfect,” he grinned, going back to sit in Jayden’s lap.
“Alright since you’re up,” Jayden said “place our ornaments on the tree.” He lifted both to hand to Evan
“Isn’t Papa going to hang his own,” Ryan asked “I thought it’s tradition.”
“Daddy’s going to hang it for me,” Jayden explained, waving Evan to go on and hang it where they had discussed putting their ornaments already.
“Is it because of your back,” Ryan asked.
“Yes,” Jayden agreed “I’m not supposed to stand much and it’s difficult to get my chair over there.”
“Oh but next year you’ll be better?” he asked.
“I hope so,” he watched Evan as he hung their ornaments almost together.
“Papa’s very determined” Josie said “he’ll be hanging his own ornament next year.”
“Thank you sweetheart,” Jayden smiled at her “Now it’s your turn. Would you like to hang your ornament first or Baby Evanders?”
“I’ll do mine first,” she said, taking that one and indicating she wanted Evan to lift her up so she could hang it next to Ryan’s. “That means we’re going to be best friends. Now and forever.”
Lifting the final wrapped box she carefully unwrapped it. She handed the ribbon and wrapping paper to Evan. “You can keep that to remember Evander’s first Christmas.” Lifting the ornament from the box she smiled reading what was on it.
“Josie, can you read it so your brother knows what it says,” Evan requested.
There was a moment of silence while Josie figured out the best place to hang it. She chose a place close to her parents. “There,” she said, satisfied, “we’re all on the tree. One big happy family.”
“Yes we are,” Jayden agreed even though seeing the ornament for his lost son hanging on the tree brought tears to the surface. It’ll always hurt but it hurts less than it did.
“Can we sing songs now,” Josie asked.
“I don’t see why not,” Evan said "but then it’s off to bed or Santa won’t come.”
“Daddy,” Josie rolled her eyes “it doesn’t matter. I’ve got what I want most anyway.”
“And what is that?” Jayden asked.
“I’ve got you and Daddy and now I have my brother too,” she grinned. “I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
“Me either,” Ryan said, scrambling off of Jayden’s lap to help his sister pick the songs to sing.
