Did you achieve your arts challenge?

I think that I did achieve my arts challenge. I was able to not only learn more about cameras and their functions but I think I have also been able to improve shots that I take.

Did you have to change your action plan or your challenge in anyway? if so what changed and why?

I don't think that I did have to change much anything about my action plan or my arts challenge however one thing that did affect how well I progressed was time. because we had only a certain amount of time each day it meant that not everyone would get the same amount of time trying out different roles meaning that the timetable would have to be rearranged sometimes.

What went well? Why?

I think that trying out different shot types went very well for me because I found it easier to learn about cameras and how to take good shots through experience as I feel it can be more engaging and interesting. therefore I think this allowed me to learn quickly how to take better shots that are more technically complicated easier.

What was more challenging? why?

I think that trying to remember what each button did and how they worked was more challenging to me as I found it more complicated and more confusing. However I think that I understood it more as I was able to use the cameras more.

What's have you learned from doing your arts challenge?

I have learned a lot more about cameras and different shot types. I have also learned how to take different shot types which I think I can use in the future either in a job or just when I take photos of my own. I think I have also gained experience about how film set work and the different jobs that go into making films and how they have to work together to create a film.

How have your art form skills developed?

I think that not only has my knowledge of cameras and shot types developed but also my experience of taking them. I think that I am a lot better now at operating cameras than I was before taking this course.

What would you do differently another time?

I don't think that I would do much differently however I might try to take more notes on the different functions of the features on the cameras and maybe try to get some more experience in taking different shots.

What do you think about the feedback you received from others:

Chloe - (tutor) ‘You have significantly developed your skills and knowledge of using professional cameras, and have improved your understanding of filmmaking techniques and shot types.  Jack and I have been really impressed with how quickly you picked up the manual settings and operation of the sony camera, particularly within such a high pressured and time restricted environment on set. You successfully practised and delivered some complex shots using techniques like rack focus and handheld tracking. We felt you had a really natural ability for camerawork. You should keep on improving on these skills. Well done"

What leadership skills have you developed?

I’ve developed my communication skills in asking others what needs to be improved on the designs and it developed my confidence. It also developed my confidence in approaching people more. It gave me more of an understanding of what it’s like to work independently on a project. It has made me feel more confident in my creative ideas.

What have you learnt about being a good leader?

I’ve learnt to always communicate with others, and most importantly get feedback from others as soon as you come up with an idea because there may be a small specific error with the projects, and it’s important to get more people to see it to give other perspectives.

Refer back to your original project plan. Did anything happen differently to what you originally planned? If so, what and how?

For the final logo, I had to tweak the logo quite a bit. Also it was quite hard to keep to my original timeline because there were lots of other things to do in shoot and edit week, and quite often I needed longer to do each task, and to get feedback from others to continue.

Is there anything you’d do differently in the future if you were to run the project again?

In the future I would ask for more feedback from straight away, and also check all the images are copyright. In the future I might ask other people to design a unique goat image to include in the logo so we don’t need to worry about copyright issues.

What parts of your project plan worked well?

I’m really proud of the logo, and coming up with three varied designs, with different colours. I’m also proud of the way I worked with others. I liked how the poster turned out, especially with the train overlay, giving an effect of time/speed. I was happy with the fact that everyone liked the final designs, and made me feel good the effort I put in, and the feedback I got. 

Was there anything that didn’t work so well?

When I was making one of the logos, I was looking for a real goat image, and all of them seemed to be copyrighted and I forgot I needed to check. 

What was your favourite part of the leadership project?

My favourite part was taking everyone’s feedback in and putting that into the products in order to make it better.

Which things did you find most challenging?

The most challenging part was when I had to try and blend the image of Kaia in the poster with the background, and I didn’t know the right tools. I asked for help from my friends and we managed to do it together. 

What have you learnt about working effectively with other people?

I liked the many different opinions in the project, because it makes the product better in the end. And everyone has different skills to bring in which we can all learn from. 

What was the feedback from other people about your project and your role as a leader?

The other people on the project thought I had done well in my leadership project, and thought I was good to work with on the marketing for the film. Others thought the final poster and logo were really good, and were happy with the work I had done.

Chloe: ‘I was really impressed how from the offset you had a clear vision for a series of creative ideas both for the logo and the poster and how you worked independently to design drafts not only with your own editing tools and equipment, but using professional graphics software such as Photoshop. It was great to see your communication and teamwork skills develop as you took other people’s ideas on-board and shared technical skills to get the jobs done. Additionally I was taken by how you managed to capture the essence of the film ‘Time off Track’ within the aesthetics of the poster.   You have created really engaging and professional looking final designs which I know will be really helpful in promoting the film. Well done!

Jack - I thought the poster and logo were really professional, and you should be reall proud of the outcome. You worked well on your own taking responsibility on this role, as well as developing your skills collaborating with others. Great job!

Give an example of how you've worked with other people during the project

I have worked with others as part of the crew while working the on set while making sure that all props and costumes were right for filming. I worked with people like the director, the sound operator, DOP, the lights operator and the actors as well. 

Why were you working/communicating with them?

We needed to communicate with each other so that we could work together to create a good shot. I worked with the actors to make sure that they had all their props and costumes together in the right scene and in the right position. I also worked with the DOP and the director to make sure that props were not only visible, but also looked good in shot. for example in the 1900s scene that we were shooting, I had to make sure that the suffragettes signs were able to be seen by the camera from different angles. this will help the audience understand the time period more. I also had to work with the lights operator to make sure that peoples costumes and props looked alright using different sorts of light. for example in the future scene, because we used colder, whiter tones of light, we used pale clothes using colours such as white and grey to create a more futuristic feel to the scene. 

What did you want to achieve? Did you manage to achieve it?

we wanted to create a series of different scenes that the audience could identify the time period by what the props and costumes the audience could see. I think that we did manage to achieve it, however I think that at the end of the day we had to rush more as we were slightly behind which meant that those shots weren't at a level that was the same as the rest.

We also wanted to be able to work together to create a series of shots that created different atmospheres for the audience  in the time that we had so that we would be on schedule for the week and therefore would be able to film the rest of the film on time as well.

Did you have to resolve any issues that you had not previously thought about?

One issue that we had was time. Because we spent too much time on some shots it meant that we didn't have enough for others meaning that we had to rush the shots that we had at the end of our time that day which affected the quality of that shot. It also meant that things that used battery power, such as lights or the camera, would run out of battery which meant we couldn't do any more shots until we had sorted it out. It also meant that we had less time to make sure that the props and costumes were sorted out. However in the end we were able to sort out the problem that we had and was able to get all the shots that we needed for that day.

Give an example of how you've worked with other people during the project

Another example of how I've worked with other people is that I worked with other people when I was creating props for the shoot. today we made the suffragettes posters and pamphlets for the 1900s scene that was going to be filmed that day. 

Why were you working/communicating with them?

We were creating suffragette pamphlets and posters as props for the film shoot in the afternoon. For this we needed to design posters that we had researched to make sure that they would look as accurate as possible to the time period. we also had make sure that they signs were safe to hold for the shoot.

What did you want to achieve? Did you manage to achieve it?

We wanted to make pamphlets and signs that were time accurate to further show the era that the women were in in the film. I think that we were able to achieve this as we made the props in the time that we had to a high level.

Did you have to resolve any issues that you had not previously thought about?

One issue that we had was making sure that the sticks that supported the signs would stay stuck to the signs. however we were able to make sure that they did which meant we could continue with the shoot.
