Great people = great company
It's only one of the most obvious and overused startup cliches around. But a few things happened in the last week which reminded me that it's really true.Â
First up, in case you haven't heard, Yield Pop is looking for awesome developers. So far, we've interviewed about half a dozen people from all over Switzerland and Europe. On paper these candidates have interesting resumes with lots of experience, skills, smarts, etc. We usually Skype / Hangout for an hour and try to get to know them.
A good conversation is usually the start of a courtship where we try to learn a bit more about them, whilst they try to learn a bit more about us. But you'd be surprised by how few people have done any serious diligence on us or our idea.
We're actually less interested in people with the perfect skill set and experience, and more interested in people who will fit well in our team and who want to ride this startup roller coaster with us. In an environment full of hypotheses some serious roll-up-your-sleeves attitude together with a boatload of determination and a love for experimentation is what we're looking for.Â
So how do you get to join the Yield Pop team? Well to paraphrase Dave McClure: "Don't pitch us bro, just be more awesome".Â
Second, it was with deep sadness that I learnt on Monday that Sandro Aruffo passed away. Whilst at Syngenta I had the privilege of working for him on a number of projects. I immediately liked his sharp intellect and gentle yet firm style. I was always impressed by his energy, determination and good humour. Despite his illness, never once did I hear him complain. One colleague told me a story about how he left a meeting with other senior executives to deal with an intense bout of nausea only to rejoin it a few minutes later. Sandro's fortitude is an inspiration to all of us.Â
