From your prompt list: âI love you, but right now I donât like you.â with SVU Nicky or Sonny. Thank you !
A/N: Iâm sooooooooo sorry this took so long to get out!! Writerâs block is a bitch. I also chose my bby Nick, because Iâve been writing a lot of Sonny recently. I hope you enjoy!
Tonight was supposed to be special. For the first time in along time, Nick was off work. Not on call, but completely off. Youâd borrowed afamily recipe from his mom and had been in the kitchen all day, following herspecific instructions to make his favorite meal. Sure, you were a good cook, but you werenât Cuban, so there were a few techniques youâd never used before.
The tortillas were warming in the oven, the last step, whenyou heard Nickâs keys jingling from the other side of the door.
âI got it,â you called as you ran to unlock the front dooror him. âHi, babe!â
âHey,â he huffed and kissed your cheek as he walked past youinto the apartment.
âNick, whatâs wrong?â You watched him shrug off his jacketand throw it onto the arm of the couch before he unbuttoned his shirt while walkingtowards your shared bedroom.
âJust guess,â he called from the other room.
You prided yourself in knowing Nick more than he knewhimself and the look on his face was familiar. You grabbed a rocks glass fromthe kitchen and poured a small serving of whiskey and made your way to him.
âHere,â you said handing him the drink. âNow tell me whatâsgoing on.â
âMaria called,â he threw the drink back in one sip andplaced the glass on the dresser. Unfortunately, this situation was familiar, and you knew what was coming next, but you had no plans to interrupt him. Youknew Nick had actively been trying to control his temper and if he wascommunicating, that was a step in the right direction. âSheâs keeping Zara thissummer, she said she signed her up for some beach summer camp.â He mumbled tohimself in Spanish as he picked up the glass and walked back towards thekitchen.
âGuess Iâll follow you then,â you thought to yourself as youtrailed your disheveled boyfriend.
âBeach camp, what a load of crap. Zara doesnât even like theocean, she hates it.â At this point you werenât sure if Nick was talking tohimself or you, but you let him continue to vent and pour himself anotherdrink. âShe canât keep doing this. So, what if I have a record? She canât keepher from me, Iâll take her to court. Zara es mi hija, mi sangre.â
The timer from the oven beeped behind him as he kepttalking.
âNick,â you said from the counter, knowing it only tookseconds for tortillas to burn to a crisp. âNick-â
He nodded and grabbed the towel from the counter top andpulled the pan from the oven only to slam it on the counter. âGod dam-â heyelled as he turned on the faucet to let the cold water flow over the burn onhis hand.
âIâm sorry you have to go through this, Nicky.â You walkedaround the island and grabbed the ice pack from the freezer, carefully placingit on the burn after kissing the red mark the pan left. âMaybe we can fly outthis summer, we need a vacation anyways.â
âThatâs not the point,â he said shaking his head as hewatched you rub the ointment on his hand. âI shouldnât have to fly out to seemy own daughter because her mother changed her mind.â
âMaybe we could bring Gilberto with us too, Iâm sure heâdlove that.â Nick ripped his hand away from yours and slammed it on the counter.
âYou just donât understand,â Nick shook his head. âYou donâthave kids of your own, you just donât get it.â
Your breath hitched as you looked back at Nick, standingstraight faced, realizing the gravity of what heâd just said. Sure, you didnâthave kids of your own, but you loved his children as if they were your ownflesh and blood. All the nights that Nick had Zara and got called into work, you wouldnât hesitate to stay with her. The day he found out about Gilberto, you didnât chastise him, instead you opened your arms and welcomed the boy homelike heâd been a part of your little family the whole time.
Those children were the true lights of your life and for himto spit that out so easily almost made you question if you knew the manstanding in front of you. You still stood silent, trying to wait for the stingof his words to fade. He took a step towards you only for you to take a stepaway.
â(Y/N)-â he held his hand out towards you. âI didnât meanit, I- Lo siento, mi amor.â This time it was your turn to shake your head andwalk towards the bedroom. He followed directly behind to watch you startpacking a bag. âPlease donât leave.â
âI just need a break, Nick.â You zipped your overnight bagand walked past him standing in the doorway. âI made your favorite meal, itâson the stove. Tortillas are still warm, although you already know that.â
â(Y/N), please,â Nickâs anger had completely left his body andwas replaced with the underlying hopelessness. âI love you, I need you herewith me.â Â
âI love you too, but right now I donât like you.â You triedto make your way around his large frame that was now blocking the door. âComeon, how old are you? I donât feel like playing this game.â
âYou donât have to like me,â he looked down at you, tearsbeginning to fall down his cheeks. âPlease, just stay. Youâre all I have.â
You let out a loud sigh, dropping your bag on the ground knowingthat running away from your problems never solved anything. Your boyfriend hada temper, you knew it the moment you met him, and after a bit of trial anderror, you began to learn what he meant and what he didnât. He also knew howmuch you loved his children, possibly more than you loved him. You kicked thebag to the side and closed the distance between him and placed both your handson his face.
âJust so you know, I do have a child of my own, Nick. Thatwas the whole point of tonight, the dinner, the candles on the table,â youwatched Nickâs eyes widen as he watched you talk. âTonight was supposed to bespecial and you had to be an ass and mess it all up.â Â
âIâm an idiot,â he huffed hating that his temper once again gotin the way. âWeâre going to have a baby?â
âYes, weâre having a baby,â you laughed as he picked wrappedhis arms around your waist and pulled you in tight. âNick,â you said againsthis chest. âI know weâre fighting, but I worked really hard on that food and I donâtwant it to go to waste.â
