Small, surreal but tenacious
Yanoun might be the smallest and most tenacious village in the West Bank. Less than hundred inhabitants, surrounded by 4 outposts of an illegal settlement, under constant threat of violence. The village gets its living out of sheep and olives, but it's getting almost impossible to live and get by.
In 2002 the settlers succeeded in evicting the villagers to the nearby city. With the help of both international and Israeli peace organizations they were able to return. Now for almost ten years there has been a constant international presence in the village, day and night. Violence by the soldiers and settlers has decreased but not disappeared.Â
The situation in Yanoun is surreal. Military jeeps drive along the narrow street of Yanoun before the sunrise. While walking through the village in the morning one can see gazelles and owls. Armed settlers come by force and bath in the village well. After the sheep are milked in the evening, the milk is already handed to you as cheese before breakfast. When it gets dark, the children play ball under the light of the watchtower of the illegal outpost.
This land is like the blood. This is my land.
Rashed Murrad, mayor of Yanoun

Pieni, epÀtodellinen ja sinnikÀs
Yanoun on LĂ€nsirannan kenties pienin ja sinnikkĂ€in kylĂ€. Alle sata asukasta, kaikista ilmansuunnista laittomien siirtokuntien etuvartioasemien saartamana, jatkuvan vĂ€kivallan uhan alla. KylĂ€ saa elantonsa lampaista ja oliiveista. Elintila hupenee ja elanto kĂ€y vĂ€hiin.Â
Vuonna 2002 siirtokuntalaiset onnistuivat ajamaan kylĂ€lĂ€iset evakkoon lĂ€heiseen kaupunkiin. Israelilaisten ja kansainvĂ€listen rauhanjĂ€rjestöjen avulla asukkaat uskalsivat palata. Kohta kymmenen vuoden ajan kylĂ€ssĂ€ on asunut kansainvĂ€lisiĂ€ ihmisoikeustarkkailijoita, joista pari on paikalla vuorokauden ympĂ€ri. Sotilaiden ja siirtokuntalaisten harjoittama vĂ€kivalta on laantunut, mutta ei loppunut.Â
Tilanne Yanounissa on epÀtodellinen. Ennen auringonnousua sotilasjeepit ajavat pitkin kylÀn kapeaa katua. AamukÀvelyllÀ voi nÀhdÀ pöllöjÀ ja gaselleja. Aseistetut siirtokuntalaiset tulevat vÀkisin kylpemÀÀn kylÀn kaivossa. Iltaisin vuohista lypsetty maito odottaa jo aamupalajuustona. PimeÀllÀ lapset pelaavat pallopelejÀ siirtokuntalaisten vartiotornin valossa.
TÀmÀ maa on kuin vertani. TÀmÀ on minun maani.
Rashed Murrad, Yanounin pormestari
