     as exasperated as she is, cinder can’t hide the amusement in her eyes, and her lips quirk up in a traitorous smile — the same smile that always seems to find its way onto her face whenever fred’s around. metal fingers rest gently against her cheek as she watches fred bounce in her doorway, the edge of his shirt dangerously close to rubbing against the grease stain she’d left on the doorknob earlier, and she stifles a laugh with the back of her hand as he continues to gush.

     ❛ you’re impossible, ❜ she says, voice fond, as she bumps the open drawer with her hip to shut it. cinder spins the wrench in her hand before pointing it at him, mock annoyance painted on her face ( even if she knows he can easily spot the truth in her eyes ).

       sabrina doesn’t know if she’s a good person. she never has. she’s spent a lot of her life trying to be a good person, sure, but she doesn’t think she’s always been successful. combine that with some of her more … questionable choices, and it’s lead sabrina down a very confusing path. one she finally thinks she might’ve reached the end of, finally, as she stands awkwardly and out of place in a lab she’s probably not actually allowed to be in. there, staring at a boy she barely knows in a city she’s not meant to still be in, listening to his strained voice attempt a joke, of all things ( because he is a good person, and he’s trying to comfort his friends, even through his own pain ), sabrina thinks she’s finally settled on the answer.

       sabrina spellman is not a good person.

       how could she be, when this is all her fault? when fred is writhing and seething, tearing at his shirt as his body protests against the magic inside it that was never supposed to be there, and his friends are forced to look on, unable to help him. unable to fix what she’s done. she hisses at the same time as fred does, his in pain and hers in frustration, and she only just barely registers salem curling closer around her neck. his purring is loud in her ear, but it’s easily drowned out by the agonized cries that force themselves out of fred as his body twists and contorts itself under her magic’s influence. it’s far from the first time he’s transformed, but it’s just as brutal as the first — if not more. 

       that’s not right. a pestering voice inside her tells her that he should be getting better, that while it’s not going to be comfortable, he should be getting used to it. but she can’t deny the scene in front of her, as the poor creature ( not man, he’s not a man anymore — not at this point ) screams, a pained, animalistic sound that tears rather than tugs at her heartstrings. this is all her fault. 

       it’s another roar that pulls her out of her thoughts, and she winces as she stares at the distorted fred that stands before them, a fiery rage replacing the kindness that normally lay unbroken in his gaze. it’s when he shoots a burning gaze at gogo when she calls his name, heat filling the room as he opens his mouth, that she spring into action, bounding towards fred as the bright magenta of her magic surrounds her hands, fingertips tingling as the power shoots down her hands. this is her fault, the least she can do is calm him down.

       she can distantly hear salem and hiro crying out her name underneath his growl, but she ignores them, holding her glowing hands out to fred as though trying to calm a spooked horse. at the same time as a claw rips into her side, she slams her hands against his chest, her hiss of pain turning into a strained whisper of the first calming spell that comes to mind. she squeezes her eyes shut, her breathing heavy as she continues to mumble the words between breaths. it’s only when the sharp smell of magic floods her nose and the tension leaks out of the body under her hands that she stops, shoulders dropping along with her head as a relieved sigh slips out between her lips. she’s faintly aware of the blood soaking her shirt from the gash in her side, but she ignores it in favour of lifting her head up to check up on fred. 

       he’s breathing as heavy as she is, curled in on himself as his body rights itself once more. she finally moves her hands away, shaking them once to rid the remaining tingle hanging off her fingertips. she wraps her arms around herself, hoping fred won’t notice the growing crimson stain on her clothes right away once he looks up. she’s sure he feels shitty enough already, and she purposefully ran towards him, anyway. sabrina offers him a tired smile, and she wonders if he can see the thousand apologies that lurk behind her eyes. her voice is soft when she speaks, and she has to swallow back another apology as soon as her mouth opens. 

       ❛ that one was really bad for you, wasn’t it? it feels like — like they’re getting worse. ❜ she grimaces, glancing back at honey lemon. ❛ but we’re gonna fix it soon, and i — i’m here if you want any sort of pain relief, and so’s honey lemon. we’re all here. ❜

      stars, this guy’s gonna be the death of her. honestly. 

      ❛ you can’t have ‘ me time ’ in my garage, fred. ❜ she says, lifting her hands up to make finger quotes. it’s only then she remembers she doesn’t have her gloves on, and all it takes is the overhead light glinting off of her metal hand for her to drop them back to her side, joke forgotten. screw your head back on, cinder, he doesn’t care. 

      luckily, the laugh that bubbles out of him at her words seems to do the trick, and she’s right back to staring down at him with a look that would suit a scolding mother more than an irritated teenage cyborg. if you didn’t know them, you probably would think cinder was the older of the two. she places her hands on her hips, kicking at his side ( gently, but not too gentle ) with her eyebrows raised. she hopes he can’t see the amusement she’s desperately trying to keep out of her expression, but the grin on his face proves that she’s more transparent than she thinks she is. she gives in eventually, offering him a small smile as she pads the bottom of her boot against his shirt again.

08. at a hilltop watching the sunrise.

       this has become a habit of hers, though she’s not quite sure when it began. 

       not particularly this, on second thought, though. or so she figures. she’s usually content to watch the stars from her window, or sometimes the garden, surrounded by the flowers. on occasion, she’ll climb up to the roof wrapped up in a blanket, feeling so close to the stars that she sometimes felt she could reach out and touch them.

       but that wasn’t enough tonight. her chest still ached, and the swirling, uncomfortable something in her gut didn’t fade the way it usually did. 

       ( sonya doesn’t want to admit it, but there’s a small voice in the back of her mind that suggests it may have something to do with the conversation she’d had with natasha only hours before. natasha may have been physically healed by now, but the rift between them that had torn open when her dear cousin had ripped at her heartstrings, burning the wound with the venom lacing her words — that hadn’t healed yet. they’ve forgiven each other, and yet — it still feels like there’s a chasm between them. )

       she wasn’t quite sure what it was that had tugged her away from the house to a hill when she’d decided fresh air might help, rather than her usual instinct to stay close, but she’s glad she listened to it. it was as if whatever had coiled itself around her insides slowly unraveled with every step she took away from the house, and she’d found herself running, dress hiked up to her knees and normally tidily tied up hair blowing out wildly behind her. she didn’t realize it at the time, but she’d been smiling. 

       and she was still smiling when she reached the top of the hill, breathlessly staring up at the moon and her stars, somehow closer than ever. she all but dropped down to the grass, barely noticing the dew seeping in through the thin fabric of her dress.

       and hours later, sonya still sits, knees pulled up to her chest and arms wrapped tight around them, coat discarded in the grass despite the chill of the early autumn morning. had it not been for the slow rise of the sun in the horizon, warm light peeking through the blanket of night, she’s not sure she would’ve realized how long she’d been there. there’s no harm in staying to watch the sunrise before she finally returns home, she figures — it’s been so long since she’s seen one. she’s lost in the shifting colours of the sky when she’s pulled out of her thoughts by the sound of footsteps behind her before a body sits down next to her, and she blinks in surprise when she turns and recognizes who it is instantly. the look in his eyes insinuates that he may not have slept through the night either.

        she lays on her bed, paying only partial attention to the youtube video playing on her phone as she watches the snow fall through her window. her apartment is often empty — perks of living without a roommate, duh — but it somehow feels emptier knowing that her best friends are currently enjoying their night with family and friends. while she normally wouldn’t hesitate to shamelessly crash anyway, she feels like interrupting a holiday celebration just wouldn’t be fair. but she can’t ignore the hollow feeling in her chest, and if she doesn’t figure out how to fill it soon, she thinks it might eat her alive. 

        there has to be someone else who’s not busy too, right? there’s no way everyone she knows is  — oh. oh, yeah. 

        ophelia wonders how she didn’t immediately think of him.

        she rolls over onto her stomach, exiting the video and opening up her imessage app. gnawing on her lip, ophelia opens the familiar contact, hoping that her gut instinct is right.
