Get Me To The Greek
Tonight Tom turned me on to Domaine Sigalas Asirtiko/Athiri, a 2009 from Santorini, Greece. Not my typical go-to region for white wine, but I was pleasantly surprised. A perfect accompaniment for a planning meeting with a pair of dedicated cohorts (and an order of mussels). Since 1994 Domaine Sigalas has participated in the organic farming methods program. On the volcanic soils of Santorini Island in the Aegean Sea in indigenous vineyards that are over 40 years old two unique grape varieties are being cultivated, Assyrtiko and Athiri. They are two of the most famous varieties in the Mediterranean, well known since antiquity. This blend is fermented in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperatures. The color is straw blond and bright with a nose of ripe citrus fruit. It starts nice and “round” with refreshing acidity and a delightful finish.
