J: Joy1. what makes them happy?

Above all other things, these three: 

Being free. Being loved. Being helpful.

I’ve written before about Dirk’s love for the world, and how being privileged to experience the world as a whole was never a basic right to him, but an active achievement. Dirk’s many long years of incarceration as a child and teenager removed him so far from human everyday life that he gobbles it down by the mouthful these days. Of course, he’s still being shadowed by the government wherever he goes. Of course, he still spends many a night in police cells due to his unfortunate involvements in all kinds of illegal weirdnesses. But he is free — he’s free to go wherever he wants and do whatever he pleases, as free as is possible to someone who often finds himself steered by the universe’s will. The simplest, most mundane task can give Dirk an immense amount of joy, for the very simple fact that he has the ability to do it. He has the freedom to wear colour, to eat food he actually likes, to keep his hair styled in a way that appeals to him, to speak to others, drive cars horribly, watch TV, laze about in bed, sip tea, go for walks, take baths, draw doodles … all of this makes him immensely happy. 

As for being loved? It’s been Dirk’s greatest wish since before returning into the world outside Blackwing. Blackwing never cared about Dirk, their only interest lay with Project Icarus. Dirk’s family never cared enough about him to protect him from a life as a guinea pig to the government. He never had a friend, he never had a boyfriend, he never had a parental figure that wasn’t manipulating and exploiting him. Considering his lifestyle, he couldn’t even really afford to keep a pet. As soon as Dirk finds anything even remotely resembling love ( genuine, altruistic love --- not convenience, not scientific interest, not need ), he feels completely fulfilled. It’s what he deserves. 

Thirdly, the deep-seated urge to be helpful. Dirk Gently is at his very core a kind person, which is what makes him so endearing. He wants to be good. He wants to help people. He’s on this earth for a purpose: to solve mysteries and to help others find their place in the world. Locking him away was never a good idea: he was not made to stagnate behind bars, but to put his talent to use. He wants to make a change. He wants to make a difference. He wants to matter. And he wants others to let him in, so that he may finally do all those things. 

2. who makes them happy?

In all my canon verses, his friends, without a doubt. In my writing, some people that come to mind are @protectiveforce, @siffleur, @servinglies, @lighteningbound, @vanirbound, @asynjja, @brothersitka, @theirvoices, @moonbeammuses, @acadiian, @bettercoward, @stillhavespots, @wiindchiild, @gnarxta and like ... SO many others?? Pretty much everyone I write with, to be entirely honest. 

3. are there any songs that bring them joy?

Oh, absolutely! Again, Dirk just likes being able to choose for himself. He really enjoys his music and intentionally surrounds himself with genres that cheer him up. He has a tendency to hyper-focus on a specific set of songs and binge-listen to them for weeks on end before switching to others. His favourite music - because he’s terribly biased - will probably always be whatever music Todd makes, but apart from that, Dirk is really quite into pop music. In the show, for instance, he listens to miss A ( and even though I know that Donora are Ken’s thing in canon, I really think Dirk would like them as well ). He’s a fan of softer music, too; he’s a regular listener of Troy.e S.ivan and Hayl.ey Ki.yoko, and artists like Owl C.ity please him greatly. Todd really got him into Que.en, and he all but devours David Bow.ie when he’s in the right mood. Nobody can tell me that he isn’t the most fervent subscriber of this youtube channel ksajdhkdsaha. But honestly, just throw any kind of (K-)Pop or trending boy band at him and he will be happy. 

4. are they happy often?

Very much so. Happiness is a conscious choice to Dirk, something he actively opts for every single day of his life. And though his happiness can certainly falter at times, though he often uses it as a shield to disguise his vulnerability and mould himself into the person he thinks people want to see in him, it’s frequently completely heartfelt. 

5. what brings them the most joy in the world?

A break from the universe’s craziness. Just sitting back with the people he adores and existing in a moment of shared bliss. 

N: Never Have I Ever1. what would they never do?

Give up his jackets. Lash out violently against his loved ones ( or anyone, really ). Hurt a helpless creature. Alter his past, because it got him precisely where he needs to be. Shed the colours. Tolerate an innocent person coming to harm. Accept any kind of hate crime. Reject a free meal ( especially ice cream ). 

2. what have they never done that they want to do?

Get a boyfriend? Get a boyfriend, totally. To find someone to be best friends and more with, to be loved by and to love fully in return, is one of Dirk’s most treasured dreams. He barely dares hope that he will ever get an outlet for the many romantic longings he keeps bottled up inside his stuffed-to-the-brim heart ... but obviously, I know better. 💛

3. is there anything they absolutely can’t believe people do?

Wear socks in sandals.

4. what is the most embarrassing thing they’ve done?

If Dirk Gently managed to feel embarrassment about anything at all, his entire being would cease functioning. Naturally, he does have his sheepish, flustered moments --- but the marvellous thing about them is that they are all mortifying in completely different ways, and oftentimes immediately exceeded by something even more socially frowned-upon. 

5. have they done anything they thought they’d never do?

A   :   AFFECTION.   how does your muse show affection? 

Bedelia only rare shows obvious or signs of affection the same way she doesn’t really show her emotions. It’ll be mostly her inching closer when sitting on the couch, brushing the person’s hand when she’s walking past them, etc. When she truly trusts someone, then the most obvious thing she does is snuggling up against them she sleeps. That’s when she’s the most vulnerable and if she does it, that means the other person matters a lot and she fully trusts them.
