The sound of the water running is what first awoke Sid in the morning and immediately he sat up in a jolt. Turning towards the clock as it flashed the simple 5:03 AM his eyes narrowed and he looked expecting to see his fiancé lying in bed next to him. He wasn’t surprised to see her gone, the running water coming from the kitchen had already sort of given him this sign but still - he had hoped he’d been imagining it. After all- the last three nights he’d woken up and this had been the case. Liena wasn’t next to him, she was off showering or cleaning, basically doing anything but sleeping, so needless to say Sid was getting a little worried. In all actuality he didn’t know how often it had been going on- the two of them had only officially moved in together earlier that week. It was a trial basis before they found their new apartment and at first Sid had thought it had been going well, they’d dance in the kitchen and they’d twirl around like they were teenagers. The two would have family dinners with there kids, everything was perfect. Except that Liena wasn’t sleeping and every single time Sid brought it up, she would shut down and just smile as if everything was fine.
“She just won’t tell me anything.” Sid was standing in the kitchen of fire station 81 while sipping on his coffee . His best friends and coworkers - Hailee Bennett and Reggie Prescott stood in front of him listening intently. “We’ll go to bed, and I’ll hold her until we fall asleep and everything is fine, Then I’ll wake up in the middle of the night and she’s not there, She's out cleaning or watching movies- basically doing but actually sleeping. Then I’ll ask her in the morning and she just says she’s fine and couldn’t sleep.” Sid took a deep breath while running her hand through his hair. “I’m not sure what to do anymore.” Hailee let out a sigh and putting down her own coffee cup moved forward and out her hands on Sid’s shoulders. It looked like she was going to give him some sort of advice but instead when she opened her mouth and another voice entered the conversation.
“Just talk to her Cap, I mean what’s the worst that can happen?” Marcel Ortiz interrupted hopping on the counter behind Sid while grabbing a cookie from the nearby jar. Sid turned and narrowed his eyes . Look yes he could very easily just talk to his fiancé about this situation and his worried.. However - he didn’t want to push. She had been through so much and the last thing she needed was him breathing down her neck. “Cap Liena’s my friend, I’m dating her best friend. I know her and I know how much she loves you. So i’m telling you just to talk to her.” He finished his words as the bell rang signaling an emergency and Sid just nodded. Maybe he should take that advice.
Arriving at home the next day after an extremely long shift- Sid was hoping but not expecting to see Liena asleep. It was 6 am and she had the day off- so she should be spending it resting, or at least pretend don’t like she frequently did. However when he walked in- she was on the couch and she wasn’t faking sleep or watching movies- no. She was crying.
“Liena - Beautiful, what's happening?” The woman didn’t speak, she just continued sobbing before leaning into him wrapping her arms tightly around his waist. They sat like that for a while, Sid simply running his hand up and down her back, using his other hand to run his fingers through her hair. He wanted so badly to know what was going on, but he just needed to wait. Until finally Liena spoke.
This week is the anniversary of when I escaped him.” We’re the first words out of her mouth and immediately Sid understood. Everything that happened with Dylan- it had affected her more than she ever let on, he knew that. But knowing it and seeing it were two different things and this was the first time that Liena was opening up about everything that had happened. “Today at work- we had a call where we helped a woman and her husband got arrested and I just/ couldn’t help but think of Dylan. And then I thought of us and I feel so guilty because you’re so amazing and you have to put up with everything about me and I just-“ Sid tried to listen to her rant but the minute she started talking badly about herself he had to intervene.
“Hey- I never want you to feel like you need to apologize to me about anything that you went through. You didn't deserve that... You deserve so much better than anything and everything you’ve been through. I’m sorry if I’ve made you feel like you have to apologize to me for this.” He squeezed her hand while moving some of the hair out of her face. “You never have to apologize to me Liena. I love you so much.” Sid moved and pressed his lips to her forehead When he pulled back Liena looked up at him.
“Then you need to stop apologizing too.” Sid narrowed his eyes in confusion. “You always say you’re sorry you weren’t there to help, but Sid- you helped me more than anyone else ever did. You saved me and I love you.” the man smiled slightly as Liena moved, positioning herself into his arms. “You make me feel safe Sidney Routlege- More than anyone else ever has and I’ve never loved anyone the way I love you.” She looked up at him softly before pressing her lips to hers, curling into him while wiping away the stray tears. And as Sid held her-. the woman found herself able to fall asleep for the first time in months. With the love of her life next to her.
