Hello - I am looking for a story in which Kurt is sick and dies. I think he is in high school and dating Blaine. I remember that he tells Mercedes that she is beautiful every day and I think he makes Finn promise to tell her that once he is gone. The only other detail I remember is that the story ends with Blaine being a very successful musician. I have looked thru the sick!Kurt tag and did not find it. I know that isnât much to go on but that was one of the first stories I ever read and while it has been so long ago I still remember how it made me feel. Thank you!
Hello - I am not aware of this one - so I've posted it here to see if fandom knows what it is. Thanks ~Jen

Finn was freaking out. He had no idea what to do about the feverish bundle of step-brother curled against the side of the couch. Kurt had woken up, come down the stairs, and thrown up right then and there. And though that was nasty, he didnât want to comment on it. He knew how humiliating it was for Kurt.Â
And now he just didnât know what to do. Kurt was shaking, okay? And he didnât feel comfortable.. holding him. So he picked up his phone and dialled Blaineâs number.Â
Kurt looked over frowning, âWhat are you doing..?â He tried to grab the phone, âNoooooo donât, donât! Blaine is a worrier, please donât tell him just say I-âÂ
Finn had held his hand up, speaking before Blaine could even say anything, âBlaine? Itâs Finn. Kurtâs sick and I-I donât know what to do heâs puking and shaking and heâs got a fever andâ at what point does a fever get dangerous?â He was rambling, panic dripping from his lips.Â
All Kurt can do is watch his husband fall apart as the tries to get his unresponsive body to wake up.
Felt like writing angst...
Future!Klaine
The room was white.
Kurt stared at his own face, as white as the sheets that were as white as the walls. He didnât feel his own heartbeat but the beeping told him that it was, in fact, beating. The cuts, the bruises, the cast on his leg told him that his body was broken, though he didnât feel it.
âWake up.â
It was only a whisper that he managed. His body lay unresponsive, unaffected by the tiny sound.
âWake. Up.â
How he had ended up in the white room, Kurt could not remember. He remembered a taxi and lots of flashing lights but other than that, nothing. He didnât remember being in pain or even being scared.
And yet here he was.
The handle of the door clicked. For a second or two, the door stayed closed, but then it was slowly pushed open. Puffy eyed and even paler than Kurt, Blaine came in, visibly trembling.
âOh, God...â
It was a sob more than words and in the next blink, Blaine was by Kurtâs bed, clutching his hand.
The beeping remained steady though Kurt was sure his heart just broke. Slowly, he moved to stand behind Blaine, hovering as Blaine collapsed onto a chair, every reflex in his wanting to wrap his arms around his shaking husband.
âIâm here, too,â he breathed out.
Blaine kept crying.
--
âHe must be so tired.â
Blaine was asleep with his head resting against Kurtâs mattress, his breaths coming out as short puffs.
âHe doesnât know how to use the washing machine. Itâs okay, though, I wouldnât trust him with most of my clothes anyway. Heâs quite useless with most of the household chores. He does them, sure, but somehow mopping the kitchen turns into a Cinderfella musical.â
Kurt wasnât sure who he was talking to. His comatose body most surely wasnât listening and the empty room didnât care. But the silence was simply too loud to listen to with the ever-present beeping of his heart-monitor. It was mocking him, telling him he was still alive and yet unable to wake the hell up.
âI love him so much.â
It couldnât end like this. After everything, now that they were finally there... It couldnât end like this.
âI canât leave them.â
Kurtâs hand went right through Blaineâs arm. Blaine jerked awake, âKurt...?â escaping his lips and Kurt wanted to hug him.
Nothing changed.
--
His dad looked older. Like he had shrunk. He almost seemed weak, as if the universe had finally managed to break him.
Kurt hated the universe.
âBlaine, have you spoken with the doctor?â
âI have.â
âHe thinks itâs time to...â
â...to pull the plug. Yeah, he told me.â
âWhat?!â Kurt shrieked. âNo! Iâm waking up! I am!â
âYouâre not going to.â
âOf course Iâm not going to!â Blaine yelled. âI canât... How would I...? Burt, I canât. I wonât.â
Burt sighed. Kurt could tell how tired he was just by his posture. âHeâs my baby boy,â he said. âHeâd argue that heâs too old for me to say that...â
âIâm not.â
â...but he is. Itâs not any easier for me to see him like this than it is for you. And I want to believe that heâll open his eyes any minute now and tell us that weâve been worrying for nothing but Blaine, the chances are that he wonât.â
Kurt blinked. âDad!â
âIâve lost a wife and a stepson that I considered my own and itâs going to crush me to lose him, too. But Kurt wouldnât want this. He wouldnât want to stay like this forever while we waste away waiting. Think of Tracy. He needs you now more than ever! And you havenât even been home for two days.â
Guilt twisted Kurtâs guts as Blaine closed his eyes, the same emotion twisting his soft features.
âHe keeps asking for Kurt.â Blaineâs voice was raw.
âOf course. He misses him.â
âI donât know what to say to him. He barely smiles anymore and it kills me. Heâs so young, he shouldnât have to...â Blaineâs sentence was broken by a sob that he barely managed to swallow. âI feel guilty when Iâm here because Iâm not home and I feel guilty when Iâm home because Iâm not here. I just... I donât... I donât know what to do.â
Burt nodded, slowly. âBlaine... Itâs the last thing I want, it really is. But maybe you should...â
âNO!â Blaine shouted the same time as Kurt did.
âNo, Blaine, donât,â Kurt said, knowing his words went unheard. âNot yet. I know this is not fair and I want to wake up, I really do. Iâm trying. I want to come back to you. To all of you, to you and Tracy, I... Iâm not ready to go. Please, please, donât let me go. Not yet. Not yet. Iâll wake up, I will! I promise. I promise. Please...â
Blaine turned his head and Kurtâs heart jolted when his eyes met his. For a second or two, it was like Blaine could see him.
âNot yet,â Blaine mumbled. âNot yet. Heâll come back to us.â
âOkay,â Burt replied. Kurt wondered if he imagined the relief in his voice. âOkay. Not yet.â
The room was silent after that until Burt left a few hours later, after making Blaine promise heâd come home for the night. Kurt watched as his husband smoothed out the sheets of the hospital bed and rearranged the new bouquets of flowers that had arrived earlier that day. For about an hour or so, he kept himself busy by doing small things before sinking back to the chair that had been his second home for the last three weeks.
âI can feel you right here with me,â he said quietly. âIs that silly?â
âNo,â Kurt whispered. âBlaine, I am here. Right here.â
âGod, I... I miss you. I miss you so much. Especially when Iâm putting Tracy down to bed. Thatâs our time. I never realized it until now but itâs... itâs that one moment in the day weâre all together even if one of us is not home. Like that time when you were in London. Every night during bed time weâd call you and we sang to him together until he fell asleep. Those 15 minutes it takes for him to fall asleep, weâre always together. Even when weâre not.â
A tear fell on Kurtâs cheek. He missed his little boy like crazy and wished more than anything that he could somehow steal his way to the 2 years oldâs dreams and tell him everything would be fine.
âI have to go home tonight,â Blaine continued. âIâve been a lousy dad.â
âOh, Blaine, no you havenât.â
âI hate leaving you alone.â
âI know. Itâs okay.â
âI love you so, so much, Kurt... Please, donât...â
Blaine didnât finish but Kurt knew what he wanted to say. He stepped closer to his heartbroken husband and slowly reached out his hand until his fingers were hovering just an inch from Blaineâs shoulder.
âI wonât,â he sobbed out. âI wonât, Blaine. I love you, too.â
Ever so carefully, he let his fingers touch Blaineâs shoulder.
Blaine shivered. âKurt...â
âShh. I love you. Go home to our son. Tell him Daddy loves him.â
Blaine stood up. He leaned down to kiss Kurtâs forehead, whispered âI love you,â one more time and then left the room. Kurt followed him to the door, wishing he could walk through it and go home with his husband.
âI have to wake up,â he said. âI have to.â
--
âYou once thought of me as a white knight on a steed
Now you know how happy I can be...â
Tracy, still teary after a yet another âwhereâs Daddy?â episode, rested his head against Blaineâs shoulder and yawned. His tiny fingers curled up around the fabric of Blaineâs shirt and his eyes closed slowly as he fell asleep to Blaineâs quiet singing.
â...but how much baby do we really need...?â Blaine sang, carefully lowering the boy to his bed before covering him up. He kept humming under his breath as he knelt down on the floor next to the bed, feeling lonely in a way he hadnât quite experienced before.
âDaddy loves you, Tracy,â he murmured. âHe loves you so much.â
He pushed back some of Tracyâs brown hair off his forehead. Officially, they didnât know which one was the bio dad but anyone could see Kurtâs features on the boyâs pale face. His nose, his eyes, the shape of his face... He was like a miniature Kurt and Blaine managed an actual smile at the thought of a kindergarten aged Tracy with Kurt mannerisms.
He could only hope Kurt would be there to help him raise their little boy.
--
A week.
Then two.
Kurt had tried everything. He had yelled at himself, stayed quiet, even prayed, begged, and finally cried but his body lay unmoving on the bed with no physical signs of recovery though the doctors kept saying that it was just up to him now.
Kurt hated them for saying that. It wasnât up to him. Had it been up to him, heâd have woken up weeks ago. Had it been up to him, he wouldnât put his family, his husband, his son, his dad and Carole, his friends, through the hell they were living in.
It wasnât up to him.
Kurt didnât know who it was up to but he was starting to lose the strength to bargain with them anymore.
âIâm so sorry, Blaine,â he sobbed on the day he had been in coma for 7 weeks. Blaine was crying silently into his hands and all Kurt wanted to do was hug him. Instead, he stood a few feet away and cried, too. âIâm so sorry.â
Blaine whispered it, too. And Kurt knew it was time for big, hard decisions.
--
âBlaine...â the doctor sighed. âItâs been nearly two months.â
âI know,â Blaine replied slowly, frowning.
âAs hard as it is, weâre going to have to start talking about the fact that your husband might not wake up.â
Blaine shook his head. âDonât.â
His voice was so tired. So broken and beaten and tears welled up in Kurtâs eyes as he watched Blaine kiss the palm of his unmoving hand.
âYou have to let him go.â
âStop it.â
âBl...â
âPlease... please just go,â Blaine whispered.
The doctor left him alone when Blaine didnât respond to his one more attempt of an actual conversation. The room was silent except for the beeping of the heart-monitor..
God how Kurt wanted to break it pieces.
âI hate him,â Blaine mumbled suddenly. âHeâs right and I hate him. I hate him, I...â
âNo, you donât.â
Blaine sniffed. âNo, I donât.â He buried his face into his hands. âGod, Kurt. I canât do this anymore. I canât do this to you. Or Tracy.â
âOr yourself,â Kurt said quietly. âBlaine, honey. Itâs okay.â It didnât matter that Blaine couldnât hear him, he had things he needed to say. âYou gave me time. You believed in me. But this... this is just not up to us.â
âYou promised youâd never say goodbye to me.â
âI wonât.â
âI just never thought Iâd be the one whoâd have to say it.â
Kurt wanted to scream as Blaine broke down completely and started crying. His sobbing drowned the other noises of the room and with each sob, Kurt felt his world crumble a little more.
Blaineâs crying was suddenly interrupted by the sound of his phone binging with a text message. He wiped his eyes and took a quick look before putting it back into his pocket.
âI have a little surprise for you,â he said, his voice raw. As if on cue, the door opened.
âDaddy!â
âOh God...â
Tracy had grown, Kurt noticed. His hair was longer, too.
And suddenly, Kurt wasnât so ready to let go after all.
âDaddy! Daddy, Daddy!â
Tracy squirmed out of Burtâs arms and wobbled on his short legs to the bed. Blaine lifted him up and Kurt gasped as he felt the soft touch of the small hand on his cheek.
âWake up, Daddy! Wake up!â
âI will. I will, baby, I will, I promise, I...â
âKurt?â
And then Kurt felt the hold of Blaineâs hand, soft and strong, and he squeezed and Blaine nearly fell on his knees.
âKurt? Kurt, honey, can you hear me??â
Kurt felt oxygen filling his lungs. He felt the soft mattress under him. He felt the weight of his son and his husbandâs free hand petting his hair.
He felt his heart beat.
He closed his eyes. And when he opened them, he was looking up instead of down.
He heard his name, he heard Tracyâs young, delighted shrieks, and he wanted to answer, to finally say that he really was still here. He was told to blink by an unfamiliar voice and he did, frowning, and then coughed when commanded and then there was pain in his throat that made him gag and then he could at last turn his head to see Blaine and Burt, with Tracy in his arms.
â...hey...â
âDonât try to speak. Your throat will be raw for a while,â the unfamiliar voice said and Kurt only obeyed because his throat really did hurt. â...be back in a while.â
âOh my God, Kurt!â Blaine whimpered as soon the doctor was out of the room, crossing the room to hug him, barely mindful of all the wires Kurt was still attached to. âOh God, you scared me... You scared me...!â
âIâm sorry...â
âHey, no, you heard the doc, donât try to talk,â Burt said, his own voice thick with emotion. âWelcome back.â
Kurt managed a smile. Burt lowered Tracy back down onto the bed. The boy was more careful now as he snuggled his way to his dadsâ arms. Kurt heard his dad say âIâll go tell Caroleâ and then they were alone, just three of them in the white room.
âI love you.âÂ
Kurt squeezed Blaineâs hand to tell him that he knew, that he loved him, too, and that he was there. He was there, he was back, he was awake.
âI figured you wouldnât leave me alone with that monster of a washing machine.â
Maybe it was stupid but if he had ever, in that moment Kurt believed in soulmates. He shook his head in amusement, hugged his son closer and tugged Blaine into a soft, sweet kiss.
The monitor kept beeping. Kurt didnât hate it anymore.

This has been sitting half-done in my drafts for over a year. Finally got it done.
Prompt: Blaine Anderson does not simply get a cold. He getâs a âMan Coldâ and this time, Kurt is simply not putting up with it.  Klaine sick!fic
If there was a season that Kurt Hummel hated most, it was definitely winter. One would think winter would be a wonderful time filled with holidays, family time, and adventures out in the snow, but they would be wrong. Winter was a time filled with stress, too much traveling and stomach bugs. That last one had hit the Anderson-Hummel family hard this winter. It all started with Jacob, their 4 year, who came home from preschool complaining that his belly hurt. Kurt figured he was just hungry and proceeded to strap him into the back of the minivan before heading to the driverâs seat himself. They got halfway home before Kurt heard a noise and looked back in horror as he watched his son vomit all over himself.
âOh baby, itâs okay.â Kurt cooed as he pulled over. At this point, Jacob was full on screaming, completely covered in vomit. Kurt groaned as he slid the back van door open. Instantly, the smell hit him and he tried to keep from vomiting himself. âOkay, buddy. Itâs okay. Youâre okay. Papaâs gonna get you all clean.â He quickly walked to the back of the trunk and grabbed a plastic bag that had luckily never made it out of the car after they went grocery shopping. He stripped Jacobâs shirt off of him and placed it in the bag and then moved to take off the little boyâs pants. Once all the vomit covered clothing was contained in the bag, Kurt grabbed Jacobâs blanket from off the floor and wrapped it around him. It wasnât a great solution, but it would have to do for now. He strapped Jacob, who had finally stopped crying back into his carseat and prayed that they could make it home before his son threw up again.
Luckily, they made it home without another incident. Kurt went to the back and unbuckled his son and picked him up. The poor little boy was flushed and he felt like he had a fever. Normally, he was so independent. He always wanted to walk- rather run everywhere, but not today. Today he was content to lay in his fatherâs arms and rest his head on Kurtâs shoulder. Kurt kissed the top of his sonâs head and headed inside. âAlright buddy, letâs get you some nice new jammies and then weâll lay on the couch and watch some TV. How does that sound?â Jacob just nodded his head, not really seeming interested in television. Kurt walked down the hallway and set Jacob on his bed once they got into his room. He walked to his dresser and opened it only to remember that all the clean laundry was in his and Blaineâs room. He sighed. âIâll be right back baby.â he said before walking further down the hallway to his own bedroom.
Once there, he was surprised to see a lump still in the bed. âWhat are you doing home?â Kurt asked, obviously waking a previously sleeping Blaine.
âI never left.â he coughed. âI think I have the flu.â Kurt walked over and placed a hand on Blaineâs forehead.
âYou donât feel warm.â Kurt replied.
âMy throat is all scratchy. I canât breathe out of my nose and my head hurts.â Blaine replied, as if to justify his current position.
âI believe you.â he replied. âYou still donât have a fever though.â Kurt grabbed the pair of pajamas and started towards the door.
âWait? Where are you going?â Blaine called, his voice rough and hoarse sounding. âStay with me.â
âI canât.â Kurt replied, a bit too quickly. âOur son is sitting in his underwear on his bed because he threw up all over himself in the back of our car and I need to get to him.â Blaine didnât have much to say after that, so Kurt left and got Jacob situated. They lay on the couch for most of the afternoon and Jacob threw up another two times, luckily into a bucket that Kurt had managed to grab this time.
Later in the afternoon, their eight year old, Lucy came home from school. Kurt gave her a snack and ushered her to her room, hoping to keep her away from as many germs as possible. One kid with a stomach bug was bad, but two...god, he didnât even want to think about, especially because Blaine wasnât being much of a help.
Blaine had lay in bed all day complaining about his head and stuffed up nose. Kurt loved his husband. He really did, but Blaine was the biggest baby when it came to him getting sick. After ten years of marriage, Kurt was done indulging him. He didnât have a fever, so it clearly wasnât the flu. At best, Blaine had a cold.
Later that night, Kurt tucked the kids into bed. Jacob luckily fell asleep and Kurt prayed that heâd stay that way. He kissed Lucy goodnight before climbing into bed himself. Instantly, Blaine wanted to cuddle. âBlaine, not tonight. I donât want to get sick.â
âFine.â Blaine grumbled before flipping over, clearly upset with his husband. Kurt rolled his eyes and turned the other way and fell asleep. He awoke (for the first time) to find out that his husband had scooted his way over and practically wrapped his body around the his own. Kurt groaned and tried to push Blaine away, but wasnât successful. He gave in and tried to go back to sleep. He was woken up for the second time that night by the call of âPapa!â from down the hallway.
âGod noâŠâ Kurt groaned as he came to and realization that it was Lucyâs voice and not Jacobâs. He pushed Blaineâs arms away from him and climbed out of bed and ran down the hall to Lucyâs room. He opened her door and instantly could smell what had just occurred. âPapa, Iâm sorry.â she cried. âI threw up in my bed.â
âItâs okay honey.â Kurt cooed. He walked over and changed his daughter into fresh pajamas and then stripped the dirty sheets from her bed.
âPapaâŠâ was all he needed to hear before quickly turning around. Lucy had her hand over her mouth and looked green. Kurt grabbed her under the arms and ran to the bathroom. They made it just in time before Lucy began throwing up. Kurt sighed and held back his daughterâs hair as she got sick.
âItâs okay honey. Let it all out.â Kurt soothed as he rubbed circles on Lucyâs back. When she was finished, Kurt helped her brush her teeth and the two of them headed into the living room where Kurt set up a makeshift bed, fully equipped with a bucket. Lucy crawled in and managed to fall back asleep and Kurt, not wanting to leave his daughter alone settled into the rocking chair and tried to sleep a little himself.
Lucy threw up four more times that night and when morning came, Kurt wasnât feeling too hot either. His stomach was fine, but his head was pounding and his nose was congested. Freakin BlaineâŠ
Kurt tried to pull himself together, despite feeling awful. When Jacob woke up, Kurt settled him on the opposite end of couch and gave him a bucket as well. He was pretty sure they were both out of the actual vomiting phase, but both kids were exhausted. He put a movie on the TV for them and they were content. His husband...or his third child rather, was getting on Kurtâs last nerve.
âWhat do you need Blaine?â Kurt asked from their bedroom doorway.
âCan I have some juice?â Blaine croaked before going into a coughing fit.
âYes.â Kurt sighed.
âKurt?â he called.
âWhat?â
âApple juice, please.â Kurt rolled his eyes and went into the kitchen and got the juice. When he returned Blaine was ready with another request.
âBlaine, you donât need tylenol.â Kurt replied.
âBut -â
âYou donât have a fever.â
âBut Iâm hot.â Blaine groaned.
âThatâs because youâre buried under three different blankets.â Kurt retorted.
âCan you fe-â Blaine began before Kurt cut him off.
âNo, I can not feel your head. I felt your head less than an hour ago. You do not have a fever.â
âPlease.â Blaine begged. Kurt groaned and placed his hand on Blaineâs forehead.
âNope, still donât have a fever.â he told his husband. âI know you feel like youâre going to die, but Iâm pretty sure youâre not. Iâll come back later and check on you and if you are dead, I will dig that grave myself.â
âKurt, thatâs not funny.â Blaine retorted. âIâm sick. I have the fluâ Kurt couldnât even take it anymore. He left and went to check on the kids. Both kids were watching the movie. He got each of them some pedialyte in a cup just to make sure they were hydrated. Not too long after, he head Blaine yelling for him again.
âWhat do you need?â Kurt asked again.
âCan you make me soup?â Blaine asked.
âAre you serious?â
âIâm hungry.â
âBlaine, you are full grown man with a cold. Not the flu. Go make your own soup. Itâs really not hard.â
âBut KurtâŠâ Blaine groaned. âCanât you please do it? I really donât feel well.â
âReally? You donât feel well.â Kurt said, his voice getting loud with the anger building inside of him. âAww poor you who got to sleep all of yesterday while I cleaned up our sonâs vomit all day. And at night, poor sick Blaine got to sleep all night while I stayed up and cleaned up our daughterâs vomit. And on top of that, my husband who just needed to cuddle last night got me sick with the same COLD that he has and I feel pretty awful too. But do I get to rest? No! Iâm doing laundry and making sure the kids are okay and making sure you donât die of a common cold!â At this point, Blaine was silent, his eyes wide in fear. Kurt however was not done. âSo, no Blaine. I canât get you soup! Iâm going to need you to suck it up, find your balls wherever they went and go make your own soup!â After that Kurt stormed out of the room leaving Blaine by himself.
Blaine never did emerge from their room, probably because he didnât know what to say after Kurtâs rant. The kids were okay for the rest of the day, neither one vomited again and both went to bed easily. Kurt who still could not look at his husband decided to sleep in the guest room that night. He settled in under the covers, his head still pounding and fell asleep praying that no one would need him during the night.
The next morning, Blaine got up out of bed and showered. He checked on the kids who were feeling much better and helped them get ready for school. He snuck quietly into the guest room and turned off Kurtâs alarm on his phone before taking the kids to school. Blaine realized that his husband must be exhausted and he definitely deserved this morning to sleep in.
Around eleven oâclock was when Kurt finally woke up. His nose was still congested, but his heading wasnât pounding anymore. He heard a knock at the door and groaned. God, he had been up for two minutes. Who wanted him? He pushed the covers off of himself and walked over to the door. He opened it and to his surprise no one was there. Instead, a bowl of still hot chicken noodle soup was sitting on a tray with a glass of water and a note that said âSorry I was such a pain. Thanks for taking care of me.â
Kurt picked up the tray and smiled. Though his husband might be the biggest baby when he was sick, he still had a good heart and that was what Kurt loved most about him. After all, their vows did say âin sickness and in healthâ so Kurt figured heâd just have to deal with Blaineâs neediness. He loved him too much not to.
sorry if this seems vague but do you know if any fics that involve some sort of secret that kurt has (for example having a health issue or smth) and only blaine knows (or the other way round), and something happens during glee and everyone find out but no one knows what to do apart from blaine. i once read one about blaine having adhd and forgetting to take his meds causing someone to comment on his attention. if you know of any like that it will be v helpful! thank you!!!
Hello - not sure exactly, but you may want to check the Mental health!Klaine tag. There's quite a few of Blaine having mental helath issues. Here are some where Kurt has, or medical issue. ~Jen

Kurt has SCID and canât leave his house. Ever. Luckily, Blaine moves in next door.
âWinter sucks. I take it back, the snow isnât worth this nightmare.âÂ
Kurt groaned, bundled up into a scarf and a hoodie. His cheeks were blood red thanks to one heck of a fever, and his voice came out as nasal with how stuffed his nose was. The brunet was sick and he was definitely feeling it. Now, he just needed someone to get his ass home and tucked in.Â
Summary: Kurt and Blaine spent the rest of their lives together and after getting married and having two kids, who arenât kids anymore they are now comfortably settled into their old age, but Blaineâs mind is going and Kurtâs body is failing.
Warning Main Character Death (From Old Age if that makes it any less tragic.)
Kurt let out a light sigh when he heard shuffling behind him. There goes his last moment of alone time. These mornings Kurt no longer slept in wasting away mornings, but instead did everything he could to wake up first. It was a peaceful time where all he had to worry about was himself. It wasnât filled with awkward silence like the rest of the day.
He could feel Blaineâs eyes on them and he prayed there would be some recognition when he turned around. âGood morning, your coffee will be ready in a short minute. I just started it. Go ahead and take a seat and I will start breakfast hmm?â Kurt directed before turning his attention to preparing breakfast. In their old years Blaineâs mind had started to fade. Kurt isnât positive what Blaine remembers and what he forgets, especially since Blaineâs communication was the first thing to go. His words are extremely limited, not that uses any words very often. Sometimes Kurt isnât sure if he canât answer questions or he is just afraid to. But Blaine has now glued himself to Kurtâs side and no matter how much it sometimes annoys Kurt he stays by Blaine as long as he needs him because Kurt still loves him with everything he has.
Kurt first gave Blaine his usual coffee, reminding Blaine to be careful because it is very hot, before returning with a plate of eggs, toast, and grapefruit. âEat up we have a very busy day ahead of us.â Kurt said as cheerfully as he could, taking his usual spot at the table across from Blaine.
It was a small table with really only room for three people. It smaller than the one in their first tiny apartment they had found together, but Kurt and Blaine decided it was time to down size over a year ago when Kurt had lost his ability to go up and down the stairs multiple times a day without putting strain on his heart, and Kurt has come to find some humor in the fact that he is losing his body and Blaine is losing his mind. It was just the two of them again, their kids all grown up and on their own, so a small townhome with the master bedroom on the first floor worked perfectly for them.
âAfter we finish breakfast we need to get ready because Clara will be here around ten,â Kurt started taking a sip of his tea. âToday is our anniversary so she is going to drive us out to the city to meet Tor for lunch and then go see a show.â
Kurt waited patiently for any sign of some expression of recognition, he gently reached and held Blaineâs free hand, praying he wouldnât pull away. He watched carefully, absent-mindedly playing with Blaineâs wedding ring. They spent their whole lives together after that first kiss in front of Kurtâs house. They broke up twice, each only lasting a little over than a week, both realizing they couldnât live without the other one. They knew early they were meant to be together so it wasnât much of a shock when they got married young. It still didnât stop people from saying it wouldnât last. They had their ups and downs, but neither of them gave up on the other.
They had two very successful children; the first child was biologically Blaineâs through a surrogate, Clara. Blaine hated that she got his curls, but Kurt loved them. Clara was always a bright minded girl, very independent, and almost always had her nose in a book. When she was little she wanted to work in a museum because it was her favorite place to visit, somehow it turned into becoming a nurse. Like them she married young to a police officer, who tragically died on duty a year after they were married. Clara had dated since then but she never remarried and never had children.
Their second child was an adopted red headed boy. They originally didnât plan on adopting. Their second child was biologically supposed to be Kurtâs but first there was difficulty with the surrogate getting pregnant and then when she finally did she lost the baby after five months. After two years of mourning Kurt decided he still wanted a second baby and that they should adopt a child who needed someone to love them. Toronto, Tor for short, was an infant when they got him. The mother was a young high school girl, barely the age of fifteen when she got pregnant. Tor was not as easy as Clara. As a baby he had a lot of stomach problems, which caused him to cry a lot. He never developed as fast and as a child he was shy and withdrawn from everyone else. Teachers explained that it could be a high functioning form of autism that kept him a step or two behind everyone else. Despite this he had become a successful chef in New York, graduating top of his class in culinary school. And though he did not marry young, he had given Kurt and Blaine their first grandchildren almost right out of his marriage, two identical twin boys named Alex and Andrew, who were now in high school. About two and half years after the birth of their twins they had a baby girl, Isabella.
Kurtâs heart was ready to beat out of his chest when he realized Blaineâs eyes were still vacant and he uncomfortably pulled his hand away from Kurt, fidgeting in his seat. They finished the rest of breakfast in silence, not that Kurt was able to finish his plate losing his appetite after a couple of bites. Â
When Kurt was done cleaning the breakfast dishing, giving Blaine the job of drying them because he wanted to help, he began to get Blaine ready for the day. It involved helping Blaine shave, style his hair, picking out an outfit as well as helping him get dressed. Blaine needed help for almost everything lately. After Blaine was ready Kurt turned on the television for him telling him he still needed to shower and get ready himself, hoping Blaine wouldnât follow him into the bathroom today. He reminded Blaine that Clara, their daughter â he specified, was coming and she had a key to their house so he wouldnât freak out when she came in, not that he has done that yet, but he wasnât sure if Blaine would remember her today or not. Before he was able to leave the room Blaine grabbed his hand. Kurt examined his face closely to figure out what he needed.
âBlaine? What is it?â he asked softly not thinking it was something important, just something Blaine wanted.
Blaine squeezed Kurtâs hand giving it a light tug to guide Kurt closer towards him.
âBlaine itâs just me you can tell me,â Kurt tried to encourage Blaine to try words. He could see that Blaine was beginning to get overwhelmed. He just wasnât sure what it was. âAre you nervous about eating out today in the city? Tor promised it was a quiet place with a small menu, and I can order for you if you want me to.â He explained taking a guess this was what Blaine was nervous about.
Blaine shook his head trying to pull Kurt to sit on the sofa with him, almost begging. He opened and closed his mouth several times before speaking âKurt ⊠um ⊠hmmm  ⊠pleaseâ
âIâm sorry Blaine I ââ Kurt started but stopped when Blaine placed his palm firmly on Kurtâs chest. Kurt paused trying to understand. He took a deep calming breath hoping Blaine would mimic him. He gently took Blaineâs hand giving it a squeeze to comfort Blaine. âItâs okay Blaine. Itâs okay. Iâm just getting ready, I promise not to take too long today and I will only be right in there okay?â Kurt explained, giving Blaine a loving kiss to further reassure him before disappearing into the master bathroom. Â
As he got into the shower he let the hot water run over his aching bones, probably from all the stress lately. Blaine has been getting worse and needing Kurt more, and as much as Kurt loved Blaine he was getting exhausted from it. Maybe he could ask Clara to come by more to help him? He really didnât want to hire someone yet or place Blaine in a home.
He felt a flutter in his chest, but reasoned it as nothing to worry about, just concern for Blaine and their situation. He got them from time to time in his old age, but they never progressed they way they had before and ever since his heart surgery when he was young Kurt made sure to take his medicine and to follow all of the doctorâs orders. He let out a sigh and reached for his shampoo knowing he couldnât spend too long in the shower. His hand shook slightly and he decided the water was maybe too hot for him, but as he turned around to adjust the temperature his vision swam, he let out a gasp as his legs buckled under him and he fell onto the shower floor with a loud. He heard the ringing in his ears and felt his chest thumping before passing out.
When Kurt woke up he had a strong feeling of deja vu. A bright light flooded his vision, making him wonder if he as dead.
âNo, youâre not dead.â A voice spoke next to him.
He breathed heavily as he turned his head to see who was there. Sitting there was Clara looking similar to the way she had when she was in the hospital waiting to hear about late husband. He laid there quietly, letting his mind catch up to what was happening. He fell in the shower ⊠no he fainted in the shower getting ready for his and-
âBlaineâ he asked urgently, and worried.
âDaddy is at home with Toronto. He was causing too many problems when they were trying to help you so they asked me to take him home. Once Tor arrived I came back.â She explained as calm as she could, her voice heavy, tired, and wavering a little. She took a shaky breath trying not to cry before continuing to explain what happened. âWhen I got to your house I couldnât find anyone. At first I thought you were both in the shower, but then I heard Daddy crying. I found him with you in the shower; he hadnât even turned the water off. Â He dialed 9-1-1 but all he could get out was âHelp, Kurt, and Noâ. When we got to the hospital, he wouldnât let them take you away, he was confused and scared.â
âClara ⊠â he breathed hard feeling his chest tighten as the monitor picked up.
She reached over and took his hand trying to calm him down, âheâs fine now. Heâs worried, but Tor is with him, keeping him company, probably doing puzzles.â
âYou should give them a call.â He instructed softly, not wanting to keep Blaine worried for a long time, âand maybe get me some water?â
âSure thing, Papaâ She smiled softly giving his forehead a soft kiss the same way he used to when she stayed home from school sick as a little girl. She would have been a wonderful mother. Â
The next person to enter the small room was a doctor. With no nurse coming in it must be pretty bad. He rushed in immediately grabbing and opening Kurtâs file to further study it. He didnât even look up as he spoke to Kurt. Blaine would have a fit over his manners. Kurt hoped Clara got in contact with them to let Blaine know he was okay.
âMr. Hummel, I caught your daughter outside and she alerted me you were awake.â He spoke with little emotion in his voice, sounding more rehearsed and robotic. He was young; it made Kurt wonder if he was just out of school or if everyone just seemed young to him now. Kurt wanted to roll his eyes; the young doctor didnât even introduce himself.
âHummel-Anderson or Kurt will do fine.â Kurt informed, wincing as he shifted to sit up more than lay down.
âIâm sorry?â He asked confused finally looking up from the file.
âMy name is Kurt Hummel-Anderson and I would appreciate if you addressed me as such. Mr. Hummel is my father.â Kurt explained losing his patience.
âRight.â He responded, pausing to close the file slowly before continuing. âMr. Hummel-Anderson Iâm sure your daughter explained what happened if you didnât remember-â
âI rememberâ Kurt cut him off. He wanted to be at home with Blaine.
âYour heart is-â
âIs failing, Iâm dying. Am I correct Doctor?â Kurt filled in, straightening the blanket before looking the young doctor in the eye.
âYou knew?â he asked more amused than shocked.
âI watched my mother and father die in a hospital and I refuse to do the same. Maybe itâs further along than I originally assumed but there is nothing anyone can do for me. So if you could please just release me?â Kurt requested hoping that the young doctor would understand.
âMr. Hummel,â He began with a sigh and looking away ⊠he didnât understand.
âHummel-Andersonâ Kurt corrected shortly.
âMr. Hummel-Anderson we could make you comfortable here. We need to take care of you.â He attempted to explain losing his confidence.
âI need to be home with my husband. He needs me more than I need to be here.â Kurt nearly shouted losing his ability to stay calm.
âYou will stay here.â Clara declared with finality from the doorway holding a cup of water. Kurt is well aware somewhere along growing up she picked up his stubbornness.
âIâll leave you two be.â He said not getting out of the room fast enough. Kurt wondered if he would now be assigned a new doctor.
âClaraâ he sighed tiredly now, âthere is nothing they can do.â
âNo. They will help you. You will get better you need to stay and get better so you can take care of Daddy. He needs you.â Clara begged on the verge of tears.
âThey canât help. Itâs too late. I donât want to spend my last moments here.â He gently explained reaching out for her. She instantly came over, crying in a similar way that she had as a little girl. It felt like she was a child again as she cried into his shoulder.
âI love you Papa,â she sobbed.
âI know, and I love you my darling.â He responded, kissing her forehead. âListen I was going to wait for another day to bring this up, but I need someone to take care of your Dad when I-â
âDonâtâ ⊠please just donâtâ She begged, fresh tears threatening to spill out of her eyes.
âOkay, but I donât want your Dad to be left when Iâm gone. Itâs a lot of work and you wonât have to do it yourself, but donât leave him alone. He needs someone there.â Kurt explained stroking her soft brown curly hair.
âIâll take care of him,â Clara answered in full seriousness.
âClara itâs a lot more work than you think. He doesnât communicate and he needs someone to bath and shave him and-â He tried to explain before being cut off.
âAnd what do you think I do as a geriatrics nurse?â She answered raising an eyebrow. âI will cut back on my hours and if it ever becomes necessary I will look into a place that offers the best care in the world. Even if itâs in another country.â
âYouâre too good for us,â Kurt laughed lightly.
âIâm just trying to make you forget all the awful things Iâve done growing upâ She smiled back.
âYou were never awfulâ Kurt informed as he took the cup of water from her to sip it slowly.
âDid you get in contact with your Dad and Tor?â he asked after a couple more sips of water.
âYes, but first there is a surprise waiting for you if you feel up to it?â She asked excitedly barely staying still. So much like Blaine used to do when he couldnât keep a secret.
âAbsolutelyâ Kurt nodded his smile widening as Tor and Blaine walked through the door to his room.
Blaine didnât even wait for permission or hesitate in the slightest at rushing over to give Kurt a hug. Kurt rubbed his back soothingly for a moment before pulling back and having Blaine take the seat next to his bed.
âDad decided that he could make up you missing your lunch date with a anniversary picnic and even packed you an overnight bag so you would be comfortableâ Toronto explained holding up a small soft cooler and placing the duffle bag under the chair, out of the way.
âThank youâ Kurt spoke, his voice filled with emotions. He carefully leaned over and planted a soft kiss on Blaineâs cheek making sure to grab his hand and hold it tightly.
âWeâre going to go grab food somewhere close by and leave you two be for a little while. Weâll in back an hour or so.â Â Clara added escorting her brother out of the room to give them more privacy.
Kurtâs eyes watered, suddenly filled with fear and emotion he hadnât had before. He didnât know his heart would fail this soon. He is older than his dad had been, but it wasnât enough time.
Blaine gently reached over wiping away the tear trying to give a reassuring smile.
âCan you help me change into the pajamas you bought? This hospital gown isnât very soft.â Kurt asked after clearing the emotion from his throat.
Blaine nodded firmly, moving gently as possible. It was usually the other way around, him dressing Blaine. Mostly because if Blaine was left alone for a long period of time he tended to get nervous and sometimes forgot where he is and what he is supposed to be doing. But Blaine was gentle and careful with helping Kurt into his cotton pajama set. Kurt watched closely as Blaine buttoned his shirt, his hands only shaking slightly.
âYou knew something was wrong this morning. Thatâs what you were trying to tell me?â Kurt asked finally understanding Blaineâs odd behavior from earlier.
âYou ⊠your âŠâ Blaine let out a frustrated sigh when he couldnât find the words.
âItâs okay. You noticed I was having trouble breathing.â Kurt filled in slowly trying to get Blaine over his embarrassment and frustration.
Blaine finally looked at Kurt his eyes welling with tears, probably remembering the fear he felt.
âI thought maybe I missed taking my medicine or something. I promise I wasnât trying to hide it from you,â Kurt tried to explain. âI also didnât notice it as much. I was so distracted with getting ready in time that I missed the signs. I am so sorry Blaine.â
âDonât beâ Blaine softly commanded letting some more stray tears fall. Kurt gently reached over wiping them away with his thumbs and holding onto Blaineâs face for a moment longer before Blaine embarrassingly turned away.
âI canât believe after years of using cement on your hair you still have most of it.â Kurt joked, admiring that Blaine still looked younger than he actually is. âCompared to you I did not age well.â Kurt added slumping back down into the hospital bed watching carefully as Blaine ruffled through the duffle bag. Kurt began to worry that he forgot he already gave Kurt his pajamas.
âHoney you already-â Kurt began to carefully explain he was already changed when Blaine presented him with the bear he bought him in the hospital after his first heart surgery. He took the bear from Blaine. For the first time in a while he was speechless. Blaine remembered. Suddenly he had no more doubts. Blaine would never forget him.
âI love you so much, Blaine. Never forget how much I love you.â Kurtâs voice was wet. He let out a small sob not bothering to swallow down his emotions any longer.
âKurt?â Blaine asked worried. He placed a frightened hand on Kurtâs arm.
Kurt reached out and held onto both his hands taking a few deep breathes before explaining. âMy hearts failing. There isnât anything they can do. Iâm not in a good enough condition for surgery and treatment wonât help much.â
He watched Blaine carefully, his emotions going from confused to scared to angry in a matter of seconds. Maybe he should have waited for Clara and Toronto to return before explaining. But it was too late now he needed to push and get everything out. Blaine has needed him for so long he forgot how to rely on Blaine, but now he needed him.
âIâm so scared. I donât want to leave you. I donât want to be here in the hospital. My parents died in hospitals and it always felt so cold and lonely. I want to be at home in our bed.â Kurt was having trouble breathing again; he let himself get too upset.
âKurtâ Blaine said as calmly as possible trying to help Kurt calm himself down. âOkay?â
âYeah sorry.â Kurt apologized after he got his breathing under control again. âIâm sorry I just really want to go home.â
Blaine gently pulled Kurtâs hand and placed it on his own chest. Kurt unconsciously matched Blaineâs breathing patterns, their hearts almost becoming in sync with one another, except for the one or two beats Kurtâs heart would miss.
âHomeâ He whispered firmly, his eyes begging Kurt to understand.
Kurt nodded in response, taking his hand wipe away the last of his tears.
âYou promise not to leave me?â He asked for confirmation.
âYeahâ Blaine answered nodding.
After being assigned another doctor, someone with more seniority and some pull from people Clara had met in her work Kurt was able to leave the hospital, but was told he needed to have an oxygen tank and maybe some more therapy to help.
Things with Blaine werenât easier when they got home, sometimes Blaine would have days where he couldnât recognize Kurt or their home. These days sometimes resulted in a lot of anger that took a lot of energy from Kurt. Kurt decided they would bring back Blaineâs hobby of scrapbooking to record as many memories as possible for Blaine and it was something Blaine could still do, puzzles that the doctor suggested werenât even possible anymore, he would sit and stare at the pieces not even attempting to try to make them fit together. Clara and Toronto came by more often. It was rare to go a day without seeing a least one of them.
It was another six months before Kurt passed away. It had been a good day in the sense that Blaine recognized him, but Kurt was exhausted by that point and could barely make it out of bed or stay awake. They were snuggled on the couch watching a movie when Kurt fell asleep and slip away.
Clara was the one who had found them, thankfully since she had more experience with death than her brother did. The funeral was overwhelming. Blaine was having one of his episodes and they almost couldnât get him to attend. Â Clara wasnât positive if her Dad understood what had happened. He refused to speak anyone or even acknowledge them, so when she did ask if he understood he wouldnât give an answer either way. Her niece and nephews clung to him but there was no recognition in his eyes, he just politely allowed them to hug and hold onto him.
Clara took no hesitation in stepping in to take care of her dad. Most of the time he assumed she was only his nurse and not his daughter. Some of the time he would forget his age and beg for Kurt his boyfriend. He rarely remembered he even had kids. She and her brother took him to see Kurtâs grave as often as possible hoping in some way it kept him grounded. In the last few months of her fatherâs life she began to consider placing him in a care center after he left the house without telling her. He thankfully hadnât tried to drive, and she found him quickly in a coffee shop not fare from where she lived, but it still frightened her. She never placed him in a center or home. She couldnât leave him alone like her Papa feared he would be.
It was three years after Kurtâs death that Blaine had passed in his sleep. Â
