Characters: Nara, Shuye, mentions of the twins (Sakuya & Asuka), and Hayato
Pairing: ShuyexNara
This is based on a prompt posted on Otpprompts, needless to say this is my take on the characters as gods and goddesses. Hopefully I kept them in character. I tried to stay true to them the best that I could with the material from the demo at my disposable.
Excuse any errors in this! I kinda wrote this at 3AM... and on less than 3 hours sleep. I will go back and find any errors that need fixing later on.
Nara and Shuye are apart of a work in progress visual novel called Spirit Parade! I highly recommend you all check out it out since they have a demo you can play!
Hundreds of men and women stormed through tightly knit streets made of clay and stone, children skipping besides their parents with tiny toys or flowers freshly picked from the flowering fields springing up from the once barren earth. Laughter resounded all around, cheers and merriment followed suit- every living being celebrating the coming of spring and the bounty it provided for those that needed it.
Wine was passed around to those old enough to taste the liquid fermented during the winter. Dark red liquid dribbled down the chins of bearded men as well as down the chins of women who shared cups with their husbands or family members.
But the finest of wines were saved, bottled in the best quality glass one could afford and offered up to the Goddess who was responsible for the changing of the seasons: Nara. Humans of every age knelt before a marble statue of a woman wearing a robe bearing only a sheaf of wheat in her left hand and a pomegranate in the other.
People came and went, each offering gifts for the beloved goddess of the turning of the seasons at her temple.
Teal eyes glowered at the sight reflected in a large pool of water. “They are foolish,” With a scowl a hand fell upon the pool of water, ripples fanning out to every corner quickly dissipating the image of humans paying their respects to a woman only worshipped for her ability to bring forth green sprouts from the soil beneath their feet.
A woman, adorned with flowers braided into her purple hair, lingered by the water’s edge watching as the ripples ebbed as time passed- the currents swirling a variety of petals around in the crystal clear water before her very eyes.
“They aren’t foolish, Nara.”
The young woman snapped her head towards the source of the noise, silently groaning unhappily when her eyes spotted a mess of white hair tinged with black- Shuye.
A frown flitted across her face visibly expressing her displeasure of him showing up in her garden. The goddess made it clear to everyone she hated it when people came to visit her when she was in here. Nara liked being alone.
Refusing to look at the golden eyed god she turned her attention towards the pond, trying her best to appear interested in the rainbow scaled fish darting under the water’s surface with grace and finesse she would never have.
A heavy sigh echoed from behind her back.
“Ignoring me won’t solve anything.”
“I don’t have the energy to deal with you,” Her tone was as sharp as any razor when the young goddess opened her mouth to reply. The stubborn side of her refused to be helped or be pitied by Shuye.
Gingerly she lightly pressed her fingers against her legs, the skin of her pads ghosting across the light material of her gown- it was the only sensation she could feel at this point. Her legs no longer worked and as a result she barely felt a thing.
A rustle and a few footsteps relayed all she needed to know; Shuye was standing next to her and refusing to leave her even after her protests.
Eyes still glued to the water she lifted an arm up, waving her hand to dismiss him from her company. “Shoo already,” Nara hissed and still Shuye didn’t budge from his spot beside her.
“Forgive me but I do not believe that leaving would be wise,” His voice was monotone as always, a byproduct of his less than loved job as a god, by humans anyway. Over centuries they had come to fear the man in charge of watching over the souls of the departed, casting him as a horrendous malicious man with evil intentions. They couldn’t be further from the truth.
Lips pressed taunt Nara tried to drive him away with silence. Sadly this too didn’t work. The trickle of water flowing through the aqueducts of her gardens slowly drove her mad, forcing her to turn her head around and acknowledge the man’s presence.
An acidic taste rolled around in her mouth. She swore the taste reminded her of volcanic ash- it even burned the edges of her tongue.
Shuye stood stationary at his post beside her. The only thing that did move was his golden eyes and they flickered from her face to the pool of water Nara sat beside.
A look of disapproval swept across his face. “You shouldn’t hate them, Nara. It never ends well.” It was a warning, she knew. But it was one she heard so often paired with ‘You need to learn to be less harsh on them’ speeches.
The two of them were clearly as different as night and day.
Once again she waved a hand in the air dismissively, “I don’t hate them, you know.” Shuye merely shook his head at her response. “But you don’t love them either.”
Not wanting a lecture for the twentieth time since they had met Nara tried her best to divert the subject “Was there something you needed?” The goddess already knew what he wanted and the reason why he was here, but she wanted to distract him at the price of being helped by him.
The question did the trick as the god straightened up considerably, “Hayato and Sakuya both relayed to me that you haven’t left the gardens for hours.” There was a distinct pause. The two of them had betrayed her it seemed.
Teal eyes rolled in her sockets not the least bit amused by them sending Shuye to fetch her whenever she wanted to be alone. While she was stubborn Shuye had a way of moving things that didn’t want to move. She was one of those things it seemed.
And she cursed his abilities to make her budge when she didn’t wish to.
“Let me guess,” the corners of her lips formed into a scowl, “they wanted you to come and get me? Am I right?”
The silence on his end was damning.
Grumbling Nara mumbled under her breath about hitting Hayato where the sun don’t shine. The idiot deserved that much for this.
Continuing to curse him, while ignoring Sakuya’s involvement out of mild fear of the Goddess and her sister Asuka, she finally relented hoisted herself up off the ground and into her wooden wheelchair etched with intricate designs she had a fondness for. The goddess couldn’t help but absently admire the carvings of the blooming Lilies on the back of the chair when she wasn’t in it- which was rarely.
Once settled she glanced back at Shuye who hadn’t offered to lend her a hand, knowing full well she would snap at him and take offense whether or not he meant anything by it. It was just how she was. The idea of being coddled and pitied felt like boiling hot molten lava filling her entire stomach, slowly eating away at her stomach lining until it leaked out and devoured the rest of her internal organs and flesh.
In other words: infuriating and painful.
Not waiting for Shuye to even make his way towards the exit of the gardens Nara began wheeling herself there first, eyes wandering towards the carefully cared for landscape created solely for her benefit and no one else’s.
“Have you thought about my proposition yet?” It took Nara a few moments to realize what Shuye was talking about. But once she did she could only bite her lip. Yes she had thought about what they talked about years ago, about visiting the underworld and actually seeing the souls of humans at their barest form.
For some reason it unsettled her and yet… she wanted to see it. However if she chose to go down there Hayato would no doubt vocally express his outrage at the very idea of her going there.
Then again this was her decision was it not? Hayato couldn’t stop her if he wanted to.
She inhaled a large amount of fresh air into her lungs, stalling as long as she could before providing the answer he desired. Shuye merely wished to change her views so she wouldn’t end up becoming a cacodaemones who would then be killed off by her fellow gods and goddesses. Right now she didn’t shift any which way as Shuye was aware she was of the grey morality when it came to humans. Not everyone was nice towards them and as a result… many of them were punished when their time came and a new god or goddess replaced them.
Perhaps it wasn’t a bad idea to at least take a look at the world Shuye had to deal with on a daily basis? Swallowing a lump in her throat Nara mentally nodded to herself in confirmation.
“Shuye,” She turned to look at the god who had been watching her this entire time. No doubt he was interested in her response for there was no other reason he would be looking at her the way he had for so long. “I’ll go with you.” Those words came out faster than she expected them to. There was no way to take them back now of course; she had to go with it no matter what.
But what caught her off-guard was the small smile on Shuye’s face, a gentle almost appreciative smile tugging at the corner of his lips. It almost made the god dressed in nothing but black robes and odd pieces of gold and blue jewelry look- handsome.
“I am glad to hear that, Nara.”
Feeling a flush of heat seep into her cheeks the young goddess whipped her head to the other side, mind trying her best to find the words to cover up her sudden flustered appearance.
“Y-you better be! A-a-after all you’re going to be dealing with me for months! Best find my c-com-pany a-appealing!” A soft chuckle resounded from behind her. It was an almost unheard of sound inside her ears. Shuye was chuckling!
Shifting her eyes back over to him without moving her head the slightest she spied the smile on his face had grown a little bit more. This didn’t help her in the slightest.
“I wouldn’t have asked for you to visit if I didn’t.”
“S-Stop that crap!”
“Very well.”
And with cheeks as red as Sakuya’s and Asuka’s hair Nara wheeled out of the gardens with Shuye at her side, constantly keeping pace with the goddess without a single complaint. As for Nara she refused to look him in the eyes for fear of causing her cheeks to redden to a shade even brighter than the twins.
Why he look so good when he smiled? It was a question she would never find the answer to even as an immortal.
Notes:
cacodaemones- Evil spirits which issued forth from the underworld to cause harm although I tried to use it as a term to describe corrupted Gods or Goddesses for this story. Basically how morality with souls work in game is what I was going for.
Nara is Persephone
Shuye is Hades
Sakuya and Asuka are Apollo and Artemis- the only twins I could think of from Greek mythology. Neither of them is male. I wanted them both to be who they were ingame
Hayato would be Hermes, the messenger since Asuka and Sakuya always use him to do errands and pick things up for them. Seemed to fit.
