He continued walking away from John, the itch under his skin too hot to keep still. Shoving a couple items into a bag, he finally faced his friend with a determined look on his face. âI donât know what you want me to say, John. Sorry? Iâm not. Thatâs my child out there, and Iâm going to do what it takes to make sure theyâre safe.â Ever since the Hellfire Club had completely wrecked the Mutant Underground, Marcos had taken great care to make sure not to mention Lorna. It was still too raw to touch on, especially when it felt like everyone else had someone but him. His family was gone, corrupted. âI lied to you, fine. Wasnât the first time and it wonât be the last. Are we done?â
John stared at Marcos for a long moment, taken-aback by the aggression in his response. He wasnât surprised, exactly -- Marcos had been struggling in a pretty obvious way since Lorna left, and John hadnât known how to reach out and help him. âI just want to know why,â the leader of the Underground told him, his voice full of forced calm. Getting into a fight with Marcos wasnât going to solve anything. It would only make John feel worse, and leave the already-weak Underground with even more division.Â
âYou know that I would do anything I could to help you make sure that baby is safe, Marcos. Youâre my best friend-- and just because Lorna is lost right now, it doesnât mean sheâs always going to be. You donât have to lie to me about these things.â It wasnât clear if Marcos was listening or not, or even cared that John was talking. Sighing, he dragged a hand through his hair and shook his head in surrender. âYeah, sure. Fine. Weâre done. Go.â
