I snuck in a bit of time today to knock out the texturing process for the frames that will go with the tree silhouettes. I’m using a shoshugiban technique to reveal the grain. This was really popular on IG a few years ago and in Japan like a thousand years ago. It works great with soft woods like cedar, pine and fir. The fast growing months of the growth rings burn away while the slow, more dense, growth remains. The result is a nicely textured and colored revealed wood grain. Originally, shoshugiban was a weather protection technique and the charred parts were left intact (I think, I’ve never used it for that purpose). Check my stories for the whole process. I’ll save them as a feature. Next up will be the grinding and buffing process, then cutting the miters and assembling the frames.
