I've let Joshua stay up a little later than usual tonight. The truth is, lately I feel like we're disconnected, him and me. I'm not as tolerant as I could be, and he really knows how to push my buttons. We seem to spend more time at odds with each other than we do laughing together at the moment. But the events of today have brought some clarity. He is my son. He is my baby and the universe has trusted me to teach this little person how to navigate life. How can I expect him to grow up to be tolerant of other people's beliefs, opinions and ideals if I cannot be tolerant of his? He is blissfully unaware of the society he is growing up in. But one day he will be aware. One day he will form opinions of his own on the events that have shaped and will continue to shape the world he lives in. I hope when those days come I will have taught him enough to realise that the actions of the few do not speak for everyone. I hope he will realise that there is always good to be found even in the darkest places. I hope that he will care enough to fight for what is fair. I hope he will be open-minded and loving and accepting. I hope I can teach him these things. It may sound idealistic, but I'd like to think we won't need to fear for our children's futures. If we give them the tools they need now, they'll be the change the world needs to see. #shoshagram #london #westminster #lovenothate
