Things they don’t tell you and that you wouldn’t think of when someone enters hospice. Your refrigerator will look like you are running a short order restaurant because you are trying to find things that they can/will eat. You have to keep those staple things that they can/will eat on hand. You’ll have the things that they just want to eat nothing but that for several days and never eat again. You’ll have the things they crave or think that they could handle; but can’t eat. You stack. You juggle. You organize. You redistribute to others. You knock things in the floor in your haste to get something that’s at the back of the refrigerator. You quietly utter a curse word when something spills and you clean it up and move on. You do it quietly because they feel like it’s their fault and you don’t want them to feel that way. You thank god that some glass jars do bounce.

My kids complained about having soggy left-over pinwheels, so when they appeared in our spring-time lunch sans the soggy tortilla with Lime-garlic-olive oil dressing over greens, avocados 🥑, and fresh mozzarella - I just grinned on the inside. 😆 . . Life is full of left-overs. If you really want to make the most of what you’re given, it helps to see what’s still good to eat among the spoiled and have the willful imagination to make it beautiful again-like new. Better still, is to watch the delight over the transformation without needing to point out the details of the process to those who won’t appreciate the insight. Isn’t this what our Messiah does with us, find our gold among the dirt and make it new. He transforms us without needing to let the whole world know and we get to reappear beautiful and easier to swallow. . .
