Lost Things
I swear I had me in the morning
In the usual place in my pocket
And I had me still when I was
Brushing my hair and getting ready
I swear I was right there
When I left the house is a hurry
Skipping two steps at a time
Cause I was late as always
I swear I must've lost me somewhere
On my way to the bus stop
Or when I sat down at the window
Me falling out onto the floor
Without me realising
I swear it mustâve been there
Or when I got of at your street
Looking for your face in the crowd
I swear
I didnât loose me
Months ago
When we first met
Ditched me
Somewhere
Not even caring
Realising too late
That I do need me
More than you.

Short Forms
Didnât have much time to get this out yesterday so today will be a double feature.
This was sparked by last weeks I Ho Chuan class where we were given 10 seconds to demonstrate a portion of our forms. Well, that 10 seconds was almost my entire form. Every form I have made for the I Ho Chuan has been around that 15-30 seconds range. This isnât necessarily because I lack the creativity or knowledge of the weapon Iâm using but because they were built knowing they will be performed with limited showcase time. From nunchucks, to swords, to stick, all my forms were designed to show the versatility, range of motion, and overall effectiveness of the weapon in a short amount of time.
Short Forms: Father and Daughter (2000)
In my humble opinion, animation is one of the most expressive forms of visual media. As a cinematic experience, animation can draw so much emotion and meaning from the simplest of figures. Indeed, not a few people have argued that simplicity is the key to the crafting poignant scenes in animation. Far from merely being a cost-saving measure, both the economy of detail and stylized depictions allow the animator to create truly dramatic expressions of emotion, far exceeding what they could accomplish from a blind adherence to nature.Â
And this simplicity is what we get from this late entry to Short Forms, the Academy Award-winning short subject animation Father and Daughter. Produced in the Netherlands, the animated short tells a moving story of love and loss as set in the backdrop of the Dutch countrysideâall without a single line of dialogue. Besides winning the Oscar for Best Short Animated Film in 2001, Father and Daughter also received the BAFTA Award for Best Short Animation the very same year and was featured in the Animation Show of Shows.
What sets this apart from other animated shorts is that it takes simplicity to new heights. A mostly-silent short animation done in sepia tone, Father and Daughter nonetheless brings out a moving narrative that would enrapture anyone who has ever lost a beloved family member.
