This is my third photo shoot and I wanted to try something different for this one. I chose a darker background and different lighting in the studio as well as props on my model to change the tone of my plain portraits. I though if I were to change how I planned out my photographs I would gain more inspiration for further ideas.
I love how this turned out and the addition of the props on the model has given the photo an eye catching feature which is how magazines usually attract potential buyers, they chose a feature or a colour that will catch the eye of the person.
This was only a short shoot as I wasn’t really feeling the shoot on the whole. I felt it best to discontinue the shoot rather than waste my time on something I didn’t feel I could use.
Outcome of Shoot 3
I found this shoot really interesting to try, and I am quite pleased with the results. However just looking at them, I am not sure if these would fit alongside the brighter, more abstract images which I have so far.
Two image from this shoot will become a final photo, but I will hopefully revisit them on a nicer day.
Image 1 is the most interesting the series, because it looks the most enclosed and crowded. There is not much white space between the buildings which I something I was hoping for. I like the straight building which takes up the right of the frame. The lighthouse sign works well as a leading line, which I feel creates a depth into the background. As mentioned before, my biggest issue with this image, in fact all the images, is the bland sky. I feel it makes the scene a little less interesting. I also feel in this particular image, the two red lights on the right are distracting and more time should be spent on composing if I do revisit the locations.
Image 2 is of something quite recognisable for Glaswegians. I love the way I have photographed the suspension bridge, as it looks imposing and full of form. With the supports branching outwards off frame, there is an interesting concept of dimension in the photograph, where you feel like you’re stood there. Unlike the other images, the white space is on the outside of the structure, and not in the middle of the image. While this is an interesting alternative which singles out certain details, I feel like this isolates the structure, which I believe might not fit in with my project where I wanted to show a busy, built environment.
Image 3 has the closest atmosphere and look to my inspirational images. I believe this is because the buildings are composed nicely on either side, following the rule of thirds, with a slant in the left corner which cuts into the empty space, creating interesting shape. What also adds to this image is that the Technology and Innovation centre is modern, and has unusual patterned windows which adds some abstraction to the photo. Some details at the top of the buildings are lost because of the bleached out sky. On a nicer day, it would add a colourful reflective element which may help link the photos to the others in the project.
Shoot 3 - The Relationship - Gylly beach
For this shoot I used a 18-105mm lens as I felt it was important to use a versatile focal length due to the quite unexpected nature of the subject in terms of how far away they would be. Along with this I used an aperture of f9 whilst I was on the beach and a shutter speed of 1/80 as the lighting conditions were quite bright, with the sun reflecting off the water at most times. For the shots where I was slightly higher, not on the beach I used an aperture of either f5 or f9 as I was slightly more stretched on the focal length. These settings proved to be quite a good choice, with the sun providing some harsh shadows, however in some parts of some of the photos the sun reflecting is over exposed which I found it tricky to try and prevent without making the rest of the photo too dark.
Shoot 3 - The Relationship -Gylly Beach
For my third shoot I have decided to go and explore Gylly beach as I feel there is likely to be many relationships present a long the beach. I feel that it would be preferable to go on a bright sunny day so that I could perhaps take advantage of any harsh shadowing as well as the fact that it is likely to be busier.

Third shoot - Polgoon Vineyard
For my third shoot I decided to explore the person at work at Polgoon Vineyard whilst on a field trip to Penzance with the course. One of the lecturers arranged access to the vineyard despite it being closed to the public. I felt that this opportunity was not too be missed and that it was something slightly different to that in my two previous shoots. When thinking about what shots I would try to take, I was imagining the traditional image of workers picking the berries directly from a mass of vines in a field stretching as far as the eye could see. However this was not too be for multiple reasons, one being that the harvest season was over and so there were virtually no berries left to be picked. In addition to the lack of berries the weather was also very miserable and so shooting outdoors became a challenge, albeit a great experience shooting with my camera wrapped with a plastic bag. The lack of workers and berries in the fields was disappointing however, there was cider processing taking place in one of the small indoor buildings meaning there was of course people at work. I therefore carried a shoot out of the workers within the factory which I believe was quite successful in producing some images of the person at work. The lighting within the factory allowed for an ISO of 250 and a shutter speed of 1/80s with an aperture of f4.5 to also ensure there was a slightly shallow depth of field.
3rd Shoot
I am going to my grandparents’ house this weekend, and I am going to take my camera. They have a lot of quirky, interesting knick-knacks and I think that I could maybe change my idea to be geared more towards portraying my grandparents’ lives through photos rather than my own life in my home following surgery. I am going to make sure I shoot a lot more photos than I did on the previous shoots at home!
