So I learned something that was both funny and slightly horrifying today in Latin. In ancient Rome, men had three names, a given name, a clan name, and a name that differentiated the man from a larger clan, ex. Gaius Iulias Caesar. Women did not have given names, they had a feminine version of their father's clan name and every single daughter had the exact same name and the father just ends up numbering them, literally like 'Iulia 1, Iulia 2' etc.
