Tony Abbott's 'shirtfront' is Australia's word of the year

'Shirtfront', an aggressive Australian sports term used by Prime Minister Tony Abbott to challenge Russia's Vladimir Putin, was Wednesday picked as the National Dictionary Centre's word of the year, beating 'man-bun'. Abbott in October vowed to "shirtfront" the Russian president — an Australian Rules football term in which a player charges an opponent — over the crash of Malaysia Airlines MH17 in rebel-held eastern Ukraine. Some 298 people died in the July incident, including 38 Australian citizens and residents, with the West claiming the plane was blown out of the sky with a missile supplied by Russia, an allegation Moscow denies.

While 7000 G20 delegates and media are being offered free travel on Australia's, and possibly the world's, worst quality and most expensive public transport system, Australian taxpayers foot the bill. While anyone and everyone gets to travel over the all the toll bridges free of charge over the weekend, Australian taxpayers foot the bill again. And most atrocious, Australian taxpayers are footing the bill for all the free travel passes being handed out to homeless people around Brisbane's CBD because they've been told to go somewhere else or get arrested.

Locking up or hiding the homeless is the kind of tomfoolery we've come to expect from countries like Russia or North Korea and I fail to see how kicking people while they're down makes Australia look like a decent country. So instead of kissing the asses of the world's leaders, why don't we fund getting people off the streets and solve some problems while they're visiting Brisbane?

And not just over the weekend, do it all the time. I'm sure that would go a long way towards getting some better publicity about our country considering our oxygen thief of a prime minister can't seem to shut up about how much he wants to deck Vladimir Putin.
