Bactan Territory, Maaso Canyon, 0400 hoursÂ
Blue eyes opened up to look at a wooden ceiling reinforced with steel, feeling tiny little hands buried into his vest as he sat up and looked down to see his son curled into his side, still asleep. A rare, fond grin crossed his features, an even rarer chuckle echoing into the very early morning atmosphere as he gently dislodged the five year old to let him sleep. Lento always did get clingier in the winter months.
Rutabi stood on his two feet, stretching as he warded away his drowsiness. His first task of the day was to take care of basic hygiene.Â
In the time that Rutabi had taken to sink into the hot spring behind the house, his bun undone as his raven hair spilled over his shoulders, he noticed Lento padding over, his messy hair even more all over the place than usual. Â
âJust waking up, shaâha?â Rutabi asked of his only son, the boy nodding as he sat down on the edge of the spring.Â
âItâs too cold to sleepâŚâ Lento trailed off, only to be surprised as Rutabi gently pressed his palm to his small head.Â
âWell, since youâve woken up, a bath is in order for you, sir.â Rutabi gently teased.
Lento obediently hopped into the scalding waters once he had disrobed, coming to full wakefulness as soon as the water touched his skin. Once he was inside, the warmth seeped into his chilled skin, bringing the little one some degree of comfort.Â
A bark of laughter escaped the Morionra man, one that surprised Lento further. Rutabi rarely laughed, much less smiled at all.Â
Said man blinked as he took in his sonâs flabbergasted expression. â...What?â
Lento shook his head as he focused on bathing, letting the conversation go stale.

Sixteen hours later, Inner Rim Yamon Badlands-
An entire day of training and checking the territorial border later, and Rutabi sent Lento on his way back to their compound while he gave the alarm wires one last check, alarmed and chilled to his bones when he found three of them snapped.
Something was wrong. Something was very wrong.
Rutabi broke into a dead sprint to his house, the growing pit in his stomach at the realization that he had left his son alone screaming at his every nerve ending like the drums of death pounding on his door.
Soon enough, an explosion lit up the horizon, the sun having long since gone down, and Rutabiâs heart sank like a stone when he recognized just what was being destroyed on the other side of the canyon.
âLENTO!â

âWell, well- looks like we stumbled upon a little brat, didnât we boys?âA tall, gangly, sickly looking man cackled insidiously in Sadalan, holding Lento up by his dusky blue collar as the dried grass caught fire, a wayward blast having missed the small and limber boy as his two companions-who were even more gnarled than the walking stick- laughed like they were choking on blood in agreement.
Lento felt fear seize his heart as he tried to wrench himself free, beginning to panic. His father was nowhere in sight, he was by himself in this entire compound for days at least, and he was very certain that he was probably going to be eaten alive when he heard it.
Rutabiâs loud, angry yelling as he slammed down on the Saiyan holding him captive like a comet, using his elbow like a hammer as the sound of bone shattering echoed in the young boy's ears. Lento was released from his grip, landing on his backside painfully as he was launched out of harm's way.
Rutabi was angrier than he had ever seen him- fangs bared in a terrifying snarl as a monstrous growl escaped his throat. "I hope you fuckers are ready to be greeted by the gods down in Hell."
All hell broke loose as soon as he finished his sentence, the other two Clanless throwing themselves at him.Â
Rutabi deflected the hand to hand assault easily, dealing back equally heavy hits and sending one of the attackers through a massive, burning pyre that had once been their training area, the sound of his agonized screams following before Rutabi grabbed Lento by the scruff of his neck.Â
âGet out of here and go find help- I canât beat these two myself!â Rutabi urged, tossing Lento behind him. Bashi City, just by the edge of the continent, was only a ten minute flight away- one the boy would have to make, or they would both die.
If only Lento wasnât so stubborn.Â
âNo- I can fight with you! Iâm not a helpless baby!â Lento responded, much to his fatherâs rapidly dwindling patience.Â
âLENTO, DAMMIT, LISTEN!â Rutabi snapped, twisting his body in a disturbing display of flexibility to slam his foot into his current opponentâs face and sending him flying. âTHIS IS NOT UP FOR DEBATE! RUN!âÂ
Lento jumped into the fray anyways, a battle cry escaping him as he leaped towards the Saiyan who was now emerging from the fiery remains of their training hall, slamming his fist into his gut despite Rutabiâs urging for the boy to run.Â
Rutabi swore violently, barely avoiding getting his head smashed in by a hammer strike when Lento saw the one thing Rutabi had overlooked charging up a pink blast directly next to his head, abandoning his opponent to run to his father.Â
Rutabi, seeing the neon pink glow beside him, turned a second too late with wide eyes as it exploded against his face, overtaking his fellow intruders- along with Lento, despite the boyâs best attempts to block and deflect.
Rutabi was immediately unconscious, embracing the sweet embrace of darkness as he ragdolled through the air.

Rutabi woke to the faint light of dawn, the flames having begun to die out as he shot up like a rocket with panic over his face. The air was still aside from the smell of blood and ashes, but he couldnât hear anything aside from the slight crackle of burning grass and wood.Â
And that filled him with dread, the man scrambling to find his son when he saw two badly burnt corpses not too far from him that werenât Lento.
He didnât know how long he screamed himself hoarse trying to find him when he finally saw his small body laying against some rubble, blood going cold despite the scorching desert heat when he saw that Lento was completely unresponsive. The boyâs verdant eyes had lost the vibrance they once had, lost every bit of life within them.
Rutabi shook as he limped his way over, having broken his leg upon impact, his face bloody and raw from where he had been hit. Slowly, he dragged himself over, falling onto his knees once he had gotten to his boy. His hands shook as he reached to cradle the limp child in his arms, his vision-which he noticed was only clear in his left eye and not in both-blurring with hot, unshed tears, hunching over his small body as he held the last precious part of his life that had been snuffed out for good.

Five months laterâŚ
Rutabi sat down at a bar in Nopana City, deep in the heart of the Bactan Badlands with a cloak tied over him, his hair tied up in a bun as per usual, the hood tugged over his head as he nursed a glass of Ifarian Nectar. A rowdy bunch grew even rowdier with every drink beside his lonely table, but one voice grated on his nerves the most.Â
And that voice, he knew so damnably well.
âLittle fucker didnât stand a chance against two of my Pressure Bullets! Not even his pain in the ass old man!âÂ
Rutabi saw red, his glass cracking in his hand and attracting their attention.Â
The braggart, with his ever so ugly mug, sent him a smirk. âWhat, ya interested in hearing me out, mystery man? Come on over, then.â
âI have no interest in hearing you out,â Rutabi started, a tense, gravelly timbre to his voice thanks to not having spoken much over the past few months. âRather, I have interest on which I intend to collect.â
Nobody knew what hit them, even after Rutabi had laid waste to them all while he lifted the cocky bastard into the air by his neck, pushing his hood off to reveal a pale scar over his dead eye, his iris now unseen.Â
A rush of savage, insidious glee flooded him when he saw horror on the face of his sonâs killer, charging up a blue ki blast in his palm as he cocked his arm back to fire at his face.Â
