Hiiiiiiii I finally wrote some flash fiction for Fablehaven. It’s Brackendra set in college post canon from an outsider POV. Contains references to alcohol and swearing.
“Hey, do you know where Kendra is?”
“She’s downstairs I think” You respond immediately, you aren’t actually sure because of the poorly made screwdriver in the red solo cup in your hand but you remember seeing her head down to the basement with a few other girls for an impromptu watch of The Princess Bride. “Why?” Rachel’s face curled into a look of distaste.
“Her boyfriend’s hanging out at the front”Â
“Holy shit really?” You move a little too fast to look out the window. Kendra Sorenson was the Lit Class manic pixie dream girl, and the fact that she was a taken woman mourned universally. You needed to know what kind of lame ass boyfriend had managed to capture her attention so thoroughly that none of the drunk cheek kisses she lovingly and platonically received had swayed her attention.
Kendra’s boyfriend looked like he had stepped out of a Teen Fantasy cover, clothes and all. Wearing all white you could easily picture him in noble armour to go with his prince heartthrob outfit. His silver hair and almost pointed ears were astounding, was he even real? The only thing that broke the illusion was the phone held delicately in his hand, his supermodel face pursed into an anxious expression as he looked at it waiting for the call Kendra wasn’t receiving to go through. He looked lost leaning against his beat up van waiting wistfully, but in an infuriatingly endearing way.
“What the fuck.” You seethe “why is Kendra’s boyfriend a fucking elf prince?” You weren’t into men, but you had to concede that she had landed the catch of the century.
“It’s tragic isn’t it.” Rachel sighed, her heart steeled enough to look at him with judgement. “her heart’s been taken by a larper.” You nod, no man looked that perfect without something deeply wrong with him and the ren faire was the price Kendra was going to pay. It was fitting though, Kendra lived years in the future beyond everyone else, and he lived two hundred or so years in the past. “Better go and get her, I don’t want that man in my house.”
You down the rest of your horrid red solo cup concoction and head downstairs, shouting loud over the cacophony of party girls and movie soundtrack.Â
“Kendra! Your man is haunting the driveway!”
She stumbles her way up, extracting herself from the cuddle pile on the couch downstairs as the other girls sigh. Her eyes are shining with conscious glee, you can never tell if she actually gets drunk at these things or if she just relaxes enough to let loose.
“Did he actually get up the nerve to come to the door?” She asks as the two of you head upstairs. She frowns as you shake your head no. “I keep telling him that he’s going to have to get used to people eventually but” she waves her hands expressively, attempting to communicate a completely unreadable emotion “century long habits are hard to break.”
Before your party brain can even begin to process what she had just said, the two of you are at the front door. You hold her back for a moment before she can go, desperation edging into your voice.
“Where did you find that man? What dimension did you hop into? Is there some small town in the US I can go to?” You had to try, you could deal with the larping if it meant you had a shot. Kendra just gave you a smug smile, leaning into your ear as if she was going to reveal some world shattering secret.
“He has a sister you know. Maybe if you and girls play nice and invite him in I’ll introduce you” Then she was out the door and away, as if she didn’t just give you a life changing quest.
