It was so jarring to hear his given name outside of the very, very small handful of people who still remembered it that for a moment Merlin stared at her blankly, his mind rapidly switching gears as he looked down at the tiny redheaded woman. Well, this certainly added a level of awkwardness to things. She’d always been rather sweet to him, even while the marriage had been under stress and he seemed to be the only person her husband was willing to speak to. Maybe because of the fact — for all their troubles, she’d never had anything but love for Gareth and only wanted to ease his pain, even if she couldn’t be the one to do it.

Headcanon: While they don't live together or see each other every day, they do have contact at least once a day, depending on how busy they are that ranges from texts to phonecalls. It's one of the few 'couply' luxuries they get to have and therefore they take that very seriously.
