Survivorâs Guilt
Chapter 1: Â Restless Dreams
She wore a halo of fire. Â The wind of the back-draft rattled the little shuttle as Ship 5 screamed its death-throes. Â The noise of breaking machinery, whipping fire and echoing human cries died off to noiseless space for a moment before heat enveloped the shuttle in a stifling cocoon and the turbulence of atmosphere-entry greeted the child and his brother. Â Burning flak greeted his vision from the windows and the sunset sky of where they were landing on this planet was blood red. Â The landing was none too gentle â a slam and skid into sand. Â Nai laughed the entire time. Â
Half-melted sands and broken glass were all around him when the shuttleâs doors had cooled off enough to unlatch.  The atmosphere was breathable.  Ah, yesâŠThis world was what Rem had called a âGoldilocks Zoneâ planet after a fairy tale about an obnoxious little girl and some bears sheâd told them where the girl stole âjust rightâ things from the bears, because it was in the âjust rightâ zone to favor organic life (at least the only type that people from Earth had ever known of).  It had been deemed as âbarely habitable,â however, and only a prospect if the long-range scanner hadnât picked up a world more favorable that successive decades or centuries of cold-sleep could keep settlers fresh for.
Nai had decided that âany planet will do,â heâd supposed. It was not like he had human needs â or Vashâs needs. Â
He danced and laughed in the flames, among cold-sleep tubes holding subjects mercifully not awake enough to realize they were burning alive. They would die before they felt anything, at least. There were procedures for bringing someone out of cold-sleep. Quick-thaw was catastrophic and killed instantly. Â
Vash gaped in abject horror as he was certain that he saw a few men twitch in their caskets. Â He screamed when he saw a child â a little boy not much younger-looking than him and Nai â thrashing. Â Â
______________
Vash twitched and reached out, his fingers greeted by a thin sheet on a flat bed. Â Nai was not there, cuddled against him. Â (Vash required food, water and sleep. Â Nai required no âinputâ to remain healthy and rarely slept, but occasionally indulged in it to keep Vash company).
âI was dreaming, Rem,â Vash mumbled, but as he blinked his eyes and suddenly became aware of his surroundings, he realized that she was not there, either.  He got his bearings and tried to tell himself that, no, he had not seen anyone twitching or thrashingâŠwhen heâd seen⊠the actual source of his nightmare. The dead had died in silence and stillness. The universe, it seemed, still held small mercies.
Vash sat up and repeated what had become his daily mantra, breathing deep. Â âI am on Ship 3. Â It is in the sand-sea left behind by an ancient ocean on a recently-charted, single-biome desert planet with no name.â Â He tried to remember the chart number and the system, but theyâd been blown out of his head. There hadnât been a single day heâd been here that heâd remembered it. Â He was pretty sure heâd hit his head upon the impact of his and Naiâs shuttle â either that or the sheer trauma heâd experienced recently kept him from remembering little details. Â
âThe shipâs crew activated their gravity-well before impact and most of the ship was left intact. Â Most of the crew and passengers survived. Â I was discovered in the desert and brought here. Â I am locked in a small cell because I am an independent Plant and they donât know what to do with me.â Â
He noted the temperature of the room. âIt is stifling in here. Â I do not know where Nai is. Â I am alone.â Â
Just as he assessed his situation, the recitation of where he was and what had happened was something he reminded himself of every day to keep himself aware of reality. Â It was tempting to think that he was dreaming. Â Patched-up wounds from the crash and subsequent wandering in the jagged metal and broken glass of ship-remains as well as the rocks of the desert asserted themselves when he was in a waking state â and so, pain helped, too. Â He was often in pain when he was asleep, but nothing was as keen as when he was fully aware and actually put weight on a leg or wandered over to a wall. Â Heâd started carving markings into it, counting days to keep his reality-record. Â He did not know how much longer heâd be doing this. Â
One of the guards had already slipped a tray of breakfast through his door.  It sat there and got cold.  He was getting skinner and felt fairly weak.  Vashâs stomach asserted its existence, along with his wounds.  It didnât matter.  He was not going to give them the satisfaction of simply keeping himself sleek for slaughter⊠This was a dark line of thinking⊠like that of Nai. There was a small, annoyingly persistent part of him that thought that maybe Nai was right.  Vash expected that Brad or one of the guards was going to drag him out of this cell any day now to pronounce âa needless drain of resourcesâ or âa mercyâ or âa need for scientific studyâ and shoot him in the back of the head with a SEEDS service-revolver. Â
That⊠was if he was lucky.  A certain stark image he was desperate to forget kept swirling in his mind.  It was good for putting him off his breakfast.  If he kept on this way, thereâd definitely be less of him to flay and study.  Maybe heâd even be well and fully dead. Â
Vash knew that this thread of thought would have made Rem cry, but she wasnât here. Â Sheâd been haloed in flames, determined to avert disaster â and she had wanted him and Nai to survive. Â
âLetâs just do it already!â â Bradâs voice, arguing outside his cell.  âHe is a clear and present danger to us all!  He doesnât even produce anything!  The little brat isnât even bothering to eat what we feed himâŠjust a waste!â
âHe is a child, Brad!â â Luidaâs voice. âI canât believe you! Â Not only the greatest scientific discovery in our lifetimes â â Â (Vash cringed at that), but, âhe speaks, he feels! Â He is a person!â Â
âHeâs a glorified cow!â  Brad huffed.  âAnd a defective one, at that!  You know what the old cattle farms would do with bull-calves they couldnât useâŠâ
âWhy are you so afraid?â Â
âYou know as well as I do how much potential energy is stored in Plants.  Thereâs this one just walking around⊠You see a kid; I see a walking nuclear bomb. Diffuse, dismantle before it causes a problem, is what I say.â Â
âYou looked into his eyes, Brad, same as me. You cannot tell me that you didnât see a soul there.â Â
âIâm afraid I didnât see anything at all - Nothinâ but trouble.  Not that it mattersâŠif somethinâs a danger, I donât care if it feels and thinks and talks. Weâve got a ship full of people and even more to take care of â actual human beings -our kind.â Â
Vash tried to go back to bed. Â He wound up curled on his cot listening to tangents about rouge AI and the history of slave-revolts and the fear of the oppressed by their oppressors that kept certain bigotries alive for centuries until the remaining people of Earth had no choice but to work together to attempt to become a multi-planet species to scrap for survival. Â
Luida was pulling for him, but maybe, he thought, she should just let Brad end it already.  Brad was⊠afraid.  Vash didnât think his hatred toward him was born from malice so much as it was terror â and Brad was right to be afraid of him. Â
He had given Nai the shipâs codes that heâd hacked into.  Heâd thought it was for a prank â just another one of their ultimately harmless episodes of the ongoing prank war with Rem.  NaiâŠhad used themâŠ.he was at fault â and the stars fell from the sky, wormwoodâŠChernobyl⊠Hundreds of thousands were dead and the number was rising. Â
Every day Ship 3âs search parties combed the wreckage of nearby ships and discovered the injured and those dying of exposure, clinging to life. Â People were brought in to the hospital here. Lights and sirens sounded at least once a day when a search had returned, itâs human findings trickling in from the carriers. The population of Ship 3 was growing slowly, but not everyone made it. Â Most of those coming in died on the operating tables or a few days later in bed â too drained, too wounded. Â
There were two demolished ships within range of search and rescue. Â
One of them was Ship 5. Â
Luida had told Vash yesterday that she was sorry. They had found no sign of Rem either alive, or any part of her body, uniform or other identifiers. Â There were records from parts of the shipâs computer that were recovered that testified that Rem had held her post to the end and was, indeed, the one who relayed the signal to alert the other crews on the other ships of impending disaster. She reversed thrust, ensuring that even some of Ship 5 had survived. Â The survival of Ship 3 was credited to her as well as well as the fact that ANY of the human-colony-carriers had time to respond and avert worse damage. Luida thought it strange that the glitch that had caused this hadnât affected Plant-only carriers. Â
Vash could not tell her the truth, ever. He could stand the fear of him in Bradâs eyes. Â He would not be able to withstand the same fear in hers. Â After all, Luidaâs delicate features, her dark hair (albeit short) and her kind eyes reminded Vash of Rem â enough that he wondered, sometimes, if she might actually be a relative of some fashion, a cousin, perhaps. If so, Luida gave no indication of this.

Night came like a cloak. Â Even within the bowels of a spaceship with no window to the world of nature outside, Vash knew the hours. Â Everything dimmed beyond his window into the interior of the ship as unnecessary lights and machines were turned off for the sleep-curfew. The only light source in his room went off, plunging the room into near total blackness. A bluish-gray haze shone through the window like the static of a distant television. Â It was a cold light that Vash did not like. Â It felt like noise, even in the silence. Â
Only a few of the crew held night-time working hours. Â Most of the crew and all of the settler-class had Lights Out strictly at 10 pm. Â Of course, Ship 3 operated on Earth-time, just as the ships had in space. Â A time-system had not yet been devised to match that of the planet they were on. Â From what Vash could hear of discussions beyond his door, this planet was very close to Earth in terms of both rotation and orbit around its binary host-stars in terms of time-cycles. Â It was not exact. Â There was already some debate as to whether the people should re-work a calendar and their measurement for the length of a day or keep on with âEarth-timeâ because it was what everyone was accustomed to. Â
It had been another day of shock, accepting a grim reality, not-eating and overhearing arguments about his personhood, welfare and general existence. Â Luida had not even come to talk with him today, as she usually did. Â There were days when she was busy or otherwise restricted. Today had been a terrible day. Â
Vash had gotten settled on his cot and had just begun to fall into drowsiness at around 11 pm. Â Thatâs when the light through his window shone red in alternating flashes and a loud siren blared. Â He heard gurneys clattering past in the hallway. Â
Incoming wounded. Â The last set had happened five days ago and none of those brought in had survived. Â As time and exposure worsened initial injuries, fewer and fewer survivors were even found by the search parties and of those that came to Ship 3âs hospital, a vanishingly small number continued to survive. Â
This was on him⊠all of these slowly-dying. Vash hugged his knees as best as he was able in his tethered shackles and tried to ignore the siren.  It stopped after several minutes.  It was close to midnight before drowsiness began taking him again. Exhaustion took him into a realm without any remembered dreams. Â
______________
Someone was shaking his shoulder. Â He was being bounced around fairly violently on his bed before he snorted and blinked his eyes open. Â The day-lights were up in the ship and Luida was staring down at him.
âHuh? What?â Vash mumbled. Â
âIâm sorry to wake you up so rudely,â she announced. Â
Brad leaned on the frame of the open door, his arms crossed. Â He gave a âHmmph.â Â
âIs there something wrong?â Vash asked, seeing how pale Luidaâs face was. Â Sweat lay in beads on her forehead at her hairline. Â
âYou need to get up and come with me,â she said gently. Â âI mean, Iâll let you go to the toilet first, if you need it, or take a drink of water, but this is urgent. Â There is someone you should see.â Â
âSomeone..?â Â Vash questioned. Â A shock ran through his bones. Â Had they found Nai? Â Was Nai asking about him? Â Was he hurt? Was Nai imprisoned like he was? Had Nai killed anyone else? Any of the Ship 3 people? Â What were they going to do, knowing there were two of them now? Â What would they do knowing that heâd lied about thinking his twin was dead? Â
He stood up. Â âI donât need anything,â he answered. Â Vash was eager and also afraid. Â What was he going to say staring into those cold eyes again? Â
Luida took him by the left wrist, just above the shackle and led him down the wall. Â Brad followed closely behind, watching them carefully. Â They turned down more hallways, headed toward the hospital wing of the ship. Â
âICU?â Vash read on one of the signs as they entered the warren. Â
âYou should brace yourself,â Luida said, her tone soft. Â âAnd keep very quiet no matter what you see. Â We have many patients in need of rest. Â She needs it, as well.â Â
âShe?â Â
Luida brought Vash into a room filled with all of the beeping machines, computer-equipment, suspended bags and tubes and medical-Plant connection equipment of a hospital room with patient hovering between life and death. Â
He felt every organ in him clench and the color and warmth drain from every inch of his skin. Â
A woman lay in the bed. Â Her right arm was bandaged, down to the hand and the individual fingers. Â Blooms of red seeped through the dressing. Â The right side of her face from her cheek and her eye were bandaged and the hair on that side of her head and been burned off. Â What remained on her left side was scraggly and midnight-black. Equipment-lines snaked beneath the sheet covering her up to her mid-chest and, by the shape of its drape, her right leg ended at the knee. Â
She was thin â much thinner than when heâd last seen her.  She looked very small, like that day on their ship after heâd gotten her into a medical-bed, himself⊠after having stabbed her.  Vashâs rage at being denied his momentary suicidal-impulse and his fear of their kind had ultimately been pitiful in terms of not driving the paring-knife hard-in enough to cause immediately fatal damage.  The blade had not hit any major organs, although it had come dangerously close and she had bled a lot.  An interrupted suicide-attempt and utterly borked and half-hearted attempted murder were not what Vash wanted to be thinking about right now, but the came to his mind unbidden.  How could they not when the image he was looking at reminded him of what heâd seen then?
She was worse off now, much, much worse.
âRâŠRem?â he said, voice cracking.  He approached the bed, reaching out. Â
âCareful!â Luida warned. Â
Brad was watching this from a stiff stance in the doorway, arms crossed firmly in front of his chest.  âSo, this is that lady from the pictures?â  he asked.  He then spoke low, and cautiously, a sudden reverence seeping in.  âIs she the one who saved all our butts?  Is sheâŠthe Hero of SEEDS?â Â
âRem!â Vash cried, tears and globs of snot running freely down his face.  âIâm so sorry!  Youâre⊠youâre alive?  Youâre still alive?â Â
Vash reached out and brushed her left cheek very lightly. Â He took her hand, mindful of the IV in the back of it. Â Luida pulled a chair from against the wall and pushed it under him so he could sit down. Â Vash curled in on himself, sobbing next to the bed. Â
âIt would seem so,â Luida confirmed for Brad. âHe recognizes her.â Â
âShe doesnât look long for this world,â Brad whispered. Â In spite of his suspicions about the âPlant-brat,â he hoped that he had not heard him. Â Brad still feared Vash, but this was a moment in time in which the young one had shifted from the status of âwalking potential nuclear bombâ to âoverwhelmed child.â
Perhaps it was the touch on her hand, the gentle and rhythmic rubbing that Vash was doing with his thumb on the back of it, clear of her IV and over her knuckles⊠Remâs nose twitched.  Her left eye slivered open as she turned her face. One of the machines registered a sharp BEEP! to her change in status. Â
âVash?â she whispered, her voice hoarse and full of smoke. Â
Vash shot upright in his chair. âRem!  Rem, itâs me!  Youâre alive! You⊠you didnât die! Youâre here!  I thought you were..!  Oh, Rem, I, I, I, IâŠâ Â
âSlowâŠdownâŠâ she breathed out.  âDeep breathsâŠsweetheartâŠâ Â
Taking care of him â even in the state she was in. Â Vash immediately calmed, to Luidaâs wonderment. Â He took a deep breath and snucked up some snot. Â He carelessly tried to wipe what he couldnât take care of on a wrist, bringing up his shackle and tether into Remâs view.
Machines sprung to life in a loud cacophony as Rem suddenly tried to wriggle herself upright in bed. Â Vash jumped back in alarm and two nurses and one of the doctors rushed in. Â
âWhy is he in shackles?â Rem demanded. Her voice was a rasp and she struggled to make it loud enough to be well-heard. Â Her un-bandaged eye held fury. Â âGet him out of those right now!â Â
She shivered and clawed at the edge of her bed as the nurses held her by the shoulders, the equipment screamed and the lines on the monitors jumped. Â âYou canât get up right now!â one of the demanded. Â
âSheâs gonna kill herself!â
âEasy! Easy!â Â
Vash backed up into Luida, his eyes âlike a deer caught in headlightsâ (from stories of old Earth and some of its few remaining majestic wild animals, the last time the world was known). Â
The doctor quickly unhooked the drip to Remâs saline-IV and plunged a clear fluid from a syringe into the tube.  She suddenly arched her back and looked skyward, the eyelids of her uncovered eye fluttering.  The nurses guided her gently back into bed. âVâŠVaaaaasssshuâŠâ she slurred before the sedation took full-effect and she fell into a nearly instant sleep, her mouth parted, her hair left in a graceless mess. Â
Vash felt Luidaâs arms around him, gently hugging him from behind. Â
Brad and a pair of guards that were waiting outside took Vash back to his cell. Â
The door shut loudly. Â The sound of the lock was extra metallic, sharp and cold.

I think itâs a given why Kanzaki is ideal for Sugino. Sheâs perfect in every aspect - looks, intellect, personality, strength, and sheâs even good in video games. Every boy will definitely yearn to be with her especially if they get to know how tough and genuinely humble she is. Â
Although Sugino is, at first, entranced by Kanzaki because of her beauty, he was the first one (if not amongst) in class to approach and befriend her as shown in the class field trip when he introduced her to Nagisa and co. to include her in their group. Usually, guys would come to woo her, but Sugino did so for a different and innocent intent - he wanted to be close to her because sheâs her crush but thatâs it - considering that heâs innately friendly and gets along with everyone.Â
Itâs mainly for that reason why I think that if Kanzaki was to choose someone to go out with, itâd be our baseball lover boi.Â
Other than that, we can observe in the class field trip how Sugino has started to fall deeper for Kanzaki other than for her beauty and elegant demeanor. He also doesnât act like a knight in shining armor with Kanzaki, which other guys will normally do if they crush on her. This goes to show that he knows that Kanzaki is capable enough and doesnât need a prince on a white horse to sweep her off her feet. Moreover, he is honest about himself even when around his crush, he doesnât necessarily try to impress her. A few times weâve seen him simping over her even though he looks like a fool. Then when he received a chocolate from her on Valentinesâ, he went ballistic right in front of her.Â
About the possibility that Kanzaki likes Nagisa, that fact has no reasonable proof except for the Class 3-E relationship chart that Iâm not sure if itâs official or reliable. We may have indications, which points us that Kanzaki has a crush on him but those are just speculations on our part.Â
Even if it was true, it doesnât change my opinion that Sugino is a perfect fit for Kanzaki. Despite his undying and excessive adoration for her, they are still comfortable with each other as friends. Then, on Valentinesâ Arc, Kanzaki went out of her way to give chocolates to Sugino privately (even if they are only obligatory). That means that she holds him as someone dear to her and who she truly appreciates.Â
LASTLY, they look good together aesthetically. The color scheme of their character designs match well. Thatâs just a minor reason but itâs a charm to their dynamic.Â
As to why they rank lower than Nakamura and Sugaya despite having more plausibility of their ship, itâs because Nakamura and Sugaya as a pair is less obvious and has more interesting aspects to explore about.Â
For my fourth-ranking ship, itâs Kataoka and Isogai, the class representatives. Iâll be discussing about them next!Â
iâm learning guitar and i play bass hdjsh i like to drink whisky and smoke joints, i prefer pink floyd over the rolling stones and the beatles, sorry nut sorry boys, i have 4 cats and 2 dogs dhsj iâm into baking and cooking and i like to hear vinyls while i do it. Even though it kiiind of got chaotic
You guys always go thrifting together
Itâs one of your favorite past times
And then when you guys get back you listen to records while showing the each other your hauls
I feel like he would debate with you about Pink Floyd being better than the Stones though
âSeriously how do you not see the talent?!â
âI see it but Pink Floyd just has BETTER talent!â
Jake is also the biggest supporter of you and his brother
But he made some rules
All of which you broke just to get under his skin which was hilarious
I can just imagine you guys smoking outside laying in the grass, listening to Cream and having a super deep conversation though

He also loves shopping with you
Its literally one of his favorite things
And afterwards he will most definitely go drinking to the park with you
He doesnât get how you like Pink Floyd better but he supports it... to an extent
But heâs not like his brother who will scream at you that thereâs no one better than John Lennon
Sammy likes Pink Floyd too so you guys are good
Music was actually what got you guys talking at first!
He definitely loves your relationship with his brother, he wants you and his family to get along because heâs an absolute angel đ
Sammy would for sure teach you guitar
And you would love watching him try because you love him so much but heâs a bad teacher
Itâs funny though
and adorable
But seriously you guys are like the cutest couple ever I canât even đđ
