the omnic crisis (20+ years ago) was when a "god ai" program maintaining all robots and cyborgs ("omnics") succeeded in a hostile takeover, forcing all robots and cyborgs to rise against humanity, pushing the world to an all-out war against omnics. for cyberpunk-specific purposes i'll say this was happening during the fourth corporate war.
the awakening was the ultimate response to the omnic crisis when the first sentient a.i, aurora, immune to the god ai's control, sacrificed herself attempting to communicate her good-will towards humanity to all omnics. this inadvertently provided all omnics with sentience. some continued fighting against the oppression of humanity, but many laid down their arms, ending the omnic crisis.
the hashimoto clan are a yakuza gang that run the streets of kanezaka (think little tokyo, but separate from the tyger claws lol) in night city. they rose to power when they were the primary fighting force, and were notoriously especially cruel in their treatment of omnics; kanezaka being especially unaccepting and resentful of omnics even after the crisis in the name of "justice". many arasaka affiliates/people who have fallen from arasaka's graces join the hashimoto. shion is an elder of the clan, and deals negotiates arms deals with arasaka.
overview
shion is an omnic, whose awakening was buried in a dumpster of other omnics who had been brutalized during the crisis, in the streets of kanezaka. the hashimoto clan rose up to fight, and were notoriously malicious with their treatment of omnics. all she knew for months was fighting for survival.
the hashimoto clan take shion captive and use her superior combat affinity to train against. even with the omnic crisis abated, the threat of another omnic uprising is non-zero, and the clan will remain prepared. for years, she was given no quarter, no rest, no sentient consideration, only viewed as a mindless training bot — a part that she played well, while plotting her revenge.
in captivity, she barely saw the world outside the hashimoto headquarters, unaware of her selfhood as an "omnic", only recognizing herself as "inhuman"; different from her captors.
after 5 years in captivity, shion breaks free, killing all four hashimoto elders in her wake, thus (by gang law) securing a seat for herself, and leaving the few she had spared to fight amongst themselves for the remaining seats alongside.
with her newfound power and wealth, she altered her appearance entirely to seem more human and feminine. her facial chassis (which is distinctly omnic) is hidden by bangs, and she gave herself a fully human face and body. her appearance skews on uncanny, as her facial expression never changes aside from the red glow of her eyes, and the illumination of her neck plates when she speaks.
