Carmilla and Elleās relationship
Exactly what happened between them before Elle learned of Carmillaās true nature?Ā The dream sequences are somewhat contradictory - not a bad thing, theyāre dreams, after all, so we wouldnāt expect them to be literal truth.
But the dreams depict Carmilla feeding on Elle while awake, yet that makes no sense if the fact of her being a vampire was a shock to her, and as Carmilla herself had saidĀ āI had taken great pains to hide what I was from herā.Ā Thus, those scenes can only be seen as distorted memories, mixing fact with Elleās own fears.
Elle accused Carmilla ofĀ ādrink[ing] my bloodā, but itās unclear whether she was merely assuming that Carmilla had done so, or whether she actuallyĀ did so.Ā So, didĀ Carmilla feed on Elle in her sleep?
It would fit the novella, but the relationship between book!canon and series!canon is ... loose to say the least.
But, I think the strongest evidence in favor of the idea that Carmilla actually did feed on Elle in her sleep was what she said to LauraĀ āYou saw the dreams, you know that I ... hurt herā.Ā That could be interpreted as an implicit confession that sheād fed on Elle; I canāt think of anything else it would refer to, since Laura had already known about Carmillaās involvement in Elleās death, so what other revelation could she be referring to?
