21) things you said when we were on top of the world
LINE UP FOR SOME WONDERGAYS! consider this a teaser for the Moon nuzlocke I may or may not ever write
āSights like these make me wish Iād actually gone on a journey.ā
The sun is just peeking up over the ocean, painting the sky in gold and pink. Itās all she can see up here on the mountaināSherriās already forgotten the name in favor of memorizing the sparkle of the water, of the precise formation of the clouds as they bask in light. Itās freezing up here, too much for even her heavy jacket; thereās a thin layer of frost on the brown stone. When theyād decided to spirit away to an island region, she had packed for beach basking and sudden rainfall and maybe the occasional hike through winding jungle roads.
āIf it helps,ā True says beside her,Ā āI never saw anything like this. I donāt know if you can even get this high back home.ā
It does, a little; itās one more thing they get to share together, just the two of them. Her legs alternate between burning from the hike and shivering from the cold; she folds into Trueās side, and is engulfed by the other womanās coat. This close, Sherri can feel Trueās heart beating, a steady rhythm that matches the serene space.
āIs it bad that I donāt want to go back down?ā True asks.
āFreeze our butts off looking at the pretty water, or go take care of messy business. Some options.ā
āYou know what I mean.ā
āI do,ā Sherri says softly.Ā āAnd no, it isnāt.ā
True doesnāt answer at first, just presses their heads together. She lifts Sherriās hand to her mouth and kisses it gently, rocking Sherriās knuckles against her lips. Itās the tiny gestures like these that make Sherri remember why they came to Alola in the first place: to escape the real world for a little bit, to be young and silly and very, very much in love. But real life always had a way of wiggling itself in the small spaces people made for themselves. They could have ignored it, but thatās not the kind of people they are. Itās not the kind of person True is, especially when sheās seen the aftermath first-hand.
Kinda makes Sherri realize why sheās in love in the first place.
āThe sooner we fix this, the sooner we go home. To our jobs and not-mountains and smoggy, smoggy cities.ā
āSome options,ā True parrots back at her with a laugh.
āWe do,ā True agrees, and squeezes Sherriās hand.Ā āSorry this wasnāt the vacation I promised.ā
āYou promised me a fun time. Chaos can be fun.ā
But anything else disappears when Sherri kisses True firmly; for a moment the water is just water, the horizon just a blur of color. āSoā¦?ā Sherri teases.
Trueās green eyes are bright and glistening when they pull apart.Ā āCanāt remember. Doesnāt matter.ā
She might have forgotten, but Sherri doesnāt; she files this away, too, to cradle at night when words are no longer enough.
