Sherkin Island. By Irish standards, this beach was jam-packed when I arrived. There were at least six other people on it! 😂 You’ll often have an Irish beach all to yourself but this was a rare hot day. The sand was hot to walk on, the sea was perfectly cool and after lockdown and everything going on in the world, it felt great to just collapse on the sand for a few hours and forget about it all. Sherkin Island, Roaringwater Bay, West Cork, Ireland. Sherkin is home to many artists and it’s not hard to see why - the land and seascapes are amazing, as is the light. The warm Gulf Stream waters and sheltered spot in the bay gives the island its own microclimate. All great for photography too. An Run - West Cork Mackerel Yawl - Baltimore Wooden Boat Festival 2014.

After getting caught out in the bad weather at Cape Clear and having to head into Schull, I was in pretty bad form and really tired. I anchored in Schull, got the tent up and crashed. The next day I slept in before rowing into Schull pier to get some more food. I also found another use for thole pins! The rest of the day was spent doing laps around the more eastern islands.

Here is the other photo. It also appears to be taken at Sherkin Island, at the slipway under the monastery. It depicts a group of day trippers, probably from Skibbereen and probably on a Saturday(they were religious!). As you can see they are very well dressed so would doubtful be fishermen. Contrast the shirts and ties, with the crewman with the boat hook in his turtleneck jumper. The boat itself appears to be a Mackerel Yawl. However it does not have side decks particular to the Mackeral yawls. It may be that this yawl has auxiliary power at this stage and the side decks are no longer deemed necessary.(Edit: some Mackerel Yawls did not have side decks.) The lady sat aft of the foredeck may be my great grandmother!
