Tutbury Castle is best known as one of the fortifications in which Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned. The ruins that stand today have been remodelled on a number of occasions since those days, and in the middle of the 18th century the motte, long since missing its genuine tower, was embellished with a sham ruined turret called the Round Tower. Hi, I’m back home after a few days holiday and the blog will return later in the month.

In the meantime, if you are travelling on the A303, the cafe/restaurant at Countess Services at Amesbury, Wiltshire is temporarily closed for refurbishment.  The Shell petrol station and shop attached to it remain open.  It’s a nice friendly shop which sells motoring products, chocolate bars, cakes etc and it has a couple of Costa coffee machines.
