This is the Tomb of Sheikh Mas Mohammad Arsyad Thawil al-Bantani. He was an ulama and an Indonesian hero from the current day Province of Banten who fought in Cilegon Uprising in 1888. He was a student of Sheikh Nawawi al-Bantani, a famous ulama who was also from Banten.

Due to his involvement in the uprising, he was exiled by the Dutch East Indies government, along with many other farmers and ulamas who participated in the uprising. He was exiled in Manado, Minahasa and died there in 19 March, 1935.

His tomb, as you can see in these photos, is in the Borgo Cemetery in the current day Mahakeret Timur Sub-district, Wenang District, Manado City. Not too far from the city centre, on a hill. My ancestors from my maternal grandmother's side are buried here too.

On Wednesday, 28 January, 2026, my mother, sister, and I visited this cemetery and also his tomb for the first time. It was very hot that day. Near his tomb is the tomb of Queen Sekar Kedaton, the second wife of Sultan Hamengkubuwono V, the fifth Sultan of Yogyakarta.
