I think the heart of bonkai was in their prison world/pre-merge relationship since it involves a certain spectrum of darkness. Good girl against villain but undeniably attracted to him. People act like Kai was the worse thing to happen to Bonnie, but that's not true obviously (& absurb to believe so) considering she dabbled in Expression, was a ghost/dead, a resurrected anchor, & had friends that took advantage of her powers constantly jeopardizing her life...i thought it would be fitting to see her become the anti hero, & more a loner like Kai. I just can't see Kai canonically fitting into the MFG, he's too anti social for that. He also declares his disgust for Elena & Damon, indifference to Stefan, & annoyance towards Caroline. Lol...i loved that about him. And something tells me that he wouldn't allow Bonnie to continue sacrificing herself or this would naturally take place either way. I definitely could see Bonnie's loyalty changing as a result of Kai changing her (traumatic or not). Canon Bonnie claimed she changed when she tries to kill Kai under the snowfall, so it's only fitting that she would no longer ride bitch for her friends.
