It is notable for having the widest food spectrum of all sharks, with a range of prey that includes crustaceans, fish, seals, birds, squid, turtles, sea snakes, dolphins, and even other smaller sharks. It also has a reputation as a "garbage eater", consuming a variety of inedible, man-made objects that linger in its stomach. Though apex predators, tiger sharks are sometimes taken by groups of killer whales.The tiger shark is captured and killed for its fins, flesh, and liver. It is caught regularly in target and nontarget fisheries. Several populations have declined where they have been heavily fished. Continued demand for fins may result in further declines in the future. 💙🦈💙 #Repost @mermaid_kayleigh ・・・ I love this photo by @juansharks of me and #SharkIDRoxy a few years ago. Roxy is a fan favorite here @oneoceandiving and rightfully so! This particular tiger is a shining example of nature’s amazing ability to persevere despite harsh human impacts. Roxy has been caught, tagged, jaw broken, wrapped in net and debris to name a few. Thankfully, she’s been spotted alive again this year but it saddens me to think that one year she may not make it to migrate back to the north shore. Did you know that discarded fishing gear is a significant amount of debris found in the ocean? You can help sharks like roxy by eating more sustainable seafood options (see @seafoodwatch), saying no to #sharkfishing, #sharkfinsoup, and other shark products, cleaning up rubbish at your local beach or park, using less single use plastics & speaking up for sharks on social media and with your local government. Shark safety tips from co-founder @oceanramsey (For those curious with questions about shark behavior and safety, check out Ocean’s book, “What You Should Know About Sharks...”, currently linked in her bio, available on Amazon/Amazon Smile in select countries😉💙🦈):  “How to deter a large shark if approached: 1. Look at it 2. Face it. 3 Glance around for other sharks as it approaches 4. Slowly back away and extend any object towards it (Fins are ideal, camera I love this @axisgo and of course @gopro the most) If they continue to approach you may need to physically deter them (I love that sharks are one of the few animals that will swim up to you given enough time and depending on the species & situation of course) If they come at you then purposefully place your hand on top of their head (not the front of the nose or anywhere close to the mouth) then lock your elbow, and push yourself up and over or off to the side and look around and repeat if needed (unlikely) as you move towards your exit. Despite this and the obstacle of multiple entanglements Roxy is incredibly resilient and continues to thrive.
