There have been random moments in my life lately that make me realize how good I have it. The Ocean is one of the most peaceful places on earth, and I have the privilege of having it as my playground. There is really something special about all the creatures that get to call it home.

Hearing the electronic impulse put out by my cameras 🎥just set her off and she decided to turn on me . As you can see I was backing off as easy and calmly as possible . Luckily no one was harmed . Neither shark nor man ! But this is a situation you can suddenly find yourself in . When diving with sharks it is imperative to be prepared and have a plan . But so many things can rapidly go south , of which even the best shark divers have no preparation ! Shark fin soup is an expensive delicacy that is eaten in China as well as some Chinese restaurants in America. It can cost anywhere from $300 to $2,000, and all for a bowl of soup! Eating sharks has no nutritional value, and in fact it has been found that humans are at risk of acquiring the neurotoxin BMAA (Holtcamp 2012). This is a compound normally produced by cyanobacteria, and apex predators (like sharks) tend to have high concentrations of this because they eat so much including other predators with high concentrations of BMAA (Holtcamp 2012). It is estimated that 1.4 million tons, or around 100 million individual sharks are killed per year for shark finning (Worm et al. 2013). The practice itself is extremely wasteful and inhumane: illegal fisheries have been found to use sea lion flesh to bait the sharks, and once caught the fins are cut and the shark is discarded to either bleed out or suffocate (Schiller et al. 2015). When I see an image of an experience I feel a rush of memories and a recollection of the excited or happy emotions that come with unique interactions or special individuals. I wish the weather was calm enough to go out and enjoy time with amazing sharks like this. Meet Nikki the tiger shark, I’ve known her now around 15 years. Looking into her eyes on her level, allowing her to swim straight up to me and waiting as she gently puts her snout in my hand, the feeling is incredibly humbling and powerfully inspirational to what I do working for conservation efforts. It’s moments like this, with individuals like Nikki, that have most influenced my choice to devote my life towards working for their protection. I’ve seen a lot in my lifetime and I have a very very very deep understanding and respect for the capabilities of sharks as apex predators but there is sometime truly beautiful when a large 14+ foot tiger shark builds the trust to come up to you, eyes open, and nearly stop in front of you. I hope images like this might influence people out there who may one day be in a position making the decision if a shark lives or dies and I hope that my efforts will encourage them to choose to #helpsavesharks because that shark might be Nikki, one of the gentlest and most incredible tiger sharks I’ve ever had the honor of meeting.
