Kicked enough by 'The Social Network', I got this strong urge to create an app & put it out. The shared expense tracker thing was in my mind for something like time immemorial now. Tracking expense among room-mates was an issue we had when we moved to our first house post college. One of my the then flatmate Manish (we called him Chirkut) showed us an innovative & more importantly manageable way of doing the same. He used excel sheets. This was way back in 2006. We use to have those excel sheets lyring around for anyone to enter a house expense.

I moved to my second house in Koramangla in 2007 & was apalled at the way, people use to keep expense there. The learnings I had from Chirkut, I tried applying there. The first impression was - no da, this is complex, wont work. People decided to give it a try once & got hooked to it. The idea stood validated. It was lot more manageable than those complex state-diagram kind of stuff they use to draw, to track one to one expenses.

My 3rd house at L & T South City, never needed this arrangement. May be, we were grown up then, not to go for petty expense sharing. Or may be, since we were acquaintances (the guy's name was Jitesh & I came to his place because he put up an ad for room-mate & I did not knew him before that), we thought it to be unwise to start on a screwing-up note. Whatever it be, the situation cofronted me again, when I visited my the then girl-friend & present wife, Lakshmi. People were even lot more haphazard in maintaining the expenses. I saw the glaring need again

Back in my Kormangla house, we had this idea of creating a dedicated hardware - we called it 'Hisab Kitab Calculator'. It was our first entrepreneurial move where four of us, at different places of the globe, put aside our distances & came together in a call to discuss - hey da, we should do something of our own man. It look like an stupid idea now, but back then, we were gung-ho to do. As expected, things died at ideation stage & we moved to another idea, which eventually never saw light owing to the famous problem of co-founder desertion. Well, none of us were serious enough to leave our jobs then

The idea resurfaced during Minkle days when we thought it would be cool to let people key in the expense on the go through mobile. We were unable to make a business case out of it & the majority convinced me to believe that we would come back to the idea later sometime

Well the movie came & I thought - to heck with it. I gonna do it & would do it in less than 2 weeks (ok I admit, I took the timeline as 2 days ie weekend to start with, but well, a better job needs more time afterall). Today, while looking for a name, an old college friend Rohit Acharya, told me the name cottonslate. Awesome name it is, I wasted no time to book the domain for $1 at godaddy today. Thanks to @adsahay, who tweeted about the offer.
