he should know better- in more ways than one. better than to burn the midnight oil like he is doing, better than to answer the door after midnight and certainly better than to invite anybody into his chambers after such an hour regardless of whether or not his cursory glance down the corridor reveals a hidden servant or anyone else who might gossip about it.
yet, he steps aside immediately, expression pulling into a sharp frown of concern. " come in, please. " it's not wise, but he's never been one to deny someone in need and evie isn't the kind of person who would turn up after midnight like this without just cause, especially if she's apologising for it like that.
" are you alright? " that's his foremost concern as he closes the door behind her. she could be hurt or upset in some way. he moves to place an extra log in the fireplace and gestures for her to take the seat closest to the warm hearth. it may not fix everything, but it's cosy and it always makes him feel better and more at ease. he only hopes it will have the same effect.
