Am I Terrified of Social Interactions or Am I Afraid of Inefficiency?
I’m really starting to think it’s the latter. Sure, I’m pretty bad at one-on-one conversations. Sure, on occasion, for a brief few moments, I think it would be nice to have real life friends, but actually making it happen & meeting new people mostly seems like a waste of my time.
I live in a big city, and I don’t know many people here, except the people I know through my husband and a few people I used to work with last year. I thought I’d use a couple apps to meet people in my area to spend time with; I’ve been using the apps for a month or so, matched with many potential friends, but I haven’t made any effort to meet a single one of them in person. I thought it was just that I’m introverted or some form of social anxiety, but I’m starting to think that’s not really it.
I love creating. Whether’s it art, music, clothes, home decor; I love making things with my hands & creating things that did not exist before I brought it into fruition.
During the day, I work for my husband’s business—trying my best to manage his books, taxes, insurance, licenses, the boring side of his company that he really doesn’t have the time for. He’s the only person on the planet I would voluntarily do that kind of work for, and it frees him up to do some really amazing things.
Then, at night and on the weekends, it’s Emily time. That’s when I journal, paint, work on my hand-lettering & calligraphy, arrange some piano covers of my favorite songs, sew, embroider, design stickers, you know, work on the things that make my heart happy. The people who do know me know that I love my alone time & it’s because it’s packed full with things like that. I get the most work done when I’m alone.
So when people ask if I want to go out for coffee, lunch, window-shopping, or if I want to stay in & watch Netflix, or have dinner at their place, I don’t hesitate to say no because saying yes would mean spending hours not doing things that I love. That’s all I think about when they say we should spend time together— the fact that I would have more fun & feel much more accomplished if I spent that time alone.
I just really want a clone of myself to hang out with, to be honest. I want to continue living my life exactly the way that I already am, and if there’s someone who wants to come hang out in my office/studio/workspace (I still haven’t decided what to call it) & work on some projects next to me while I work on some of my own, or if there’s someone who’s willing to sing or play another instrument with me while I play piano, then perfect. You’re my kind of friend.
I feel like my free time is already limited, and I want to pack as much productivity into it as I can. I don’t want a break from my work. I got sh*t to do.

Five years ago, István Csanády hung a piece of paper on the wall of his nascent company’s all-too-small office. Scrawled upon it: “Easy should be easy. Hard must not be impossible.” Though this phrase was written on sheet paper, it might have well been etched into stone. It became the founding principle for Csanády’s app, Shapr 3D — a reinvention of computer-assisted design (CAD) systems, created…
