Family and Hector is one of those weird topics that he'll claim one way, and that his actions will kind of point another. It's also highly, highly verse dependent, to be honest. So, let me kind of break it down that way.
CANON: He knows what family is, but I don't imagine he has very much contact with his own actual blood relations. He left home very young - like I've stated before a few times, he was 13 when he ran away to join a merchant crew - and turned pirate very young, as well, and so that's been practically his whole life. But while he may not have much contact with his blood relations, Hector Barbossa does have a family. His family is Elizabeth Swann. Will Turner. Jack Sparrow. Pintel and Ragetti. Gibbs. Marty. Cotton. They're chosen family, though he'd never look at it that way. I refuse to believe after the end of AWE he never speaks to Elizabeth again. He and Jack are always going to bump into each other. Will is going to be the one to finally collect him when he dies. And the rest are crew, and crew is as good as family, in a lot of cases. So while he wouldn't look at it remotely like that, he's surrounded himself with people that definitely fill the roles.
MODERN: The joke @pearlsparable and I have is that Hector, an assassin for hire and part time modern pirate, comes from a completely normal family, with which he has a completely normal relationship with. His mother, his sisters, they're all so normal, and when they see each other, there's never even the slightest hint that they have any idea what they do for a living (they do). But as far as it's concerned, he's normally close to them, and them with him, and when they see each other they do normal family things, but he doesn't talk about them at all.
IMMORTAL: This one. Depends on which one, but on the whole, it's either everyone who's still alive - and at this point he'll call them family. Because they are. They're the last of their kind left in the world and they've bonded together closer than they ever could have during the Golden Age. But the other? Where it's simply him and Jack left? Jack is his family, though he'd never say so. They're all they really have left, and so they've...Stuck together and it is what it is for them.
ELDER SCROLLS: Nah, not important. The Brotherhood kind of fills that role for him, since they are supposed to kind of be a literal family, in as such as he's actually interested. To a certain degree, there are those in the Thieves Guild that do the same. But it's hard to be close to someone you know slits throats for money. And his own family are mostly gone one way or another.
FROM FIRST OBSERVATIONS it was abundantly clear to the dunmer that this individual was not as his outward countenance appeared — though she could not definitively discern what exactly he was HIDING — & the housecarl had spent many years with the morag tong to allow her to quickly scrutinize individuals & TARGETS ( she did wonder why the city guards always lacked such skills — likely due to nord stubbornness or a notion along those lines ).

He was fifteen the first time he made it to Nassau, during its heyday as a pirate refuge. He was small, and skinny, and newly turned pirate, and had no idea what to do with himself with real money in his pocket and the freedom of choice in a way he’d never experienced. He didn’t spend his first time in the usual pirate hideyholes, like the taverns (he was still wary of drink since once he’d joined the crew he ended up sailing with for ten years, they thought it was hilarious to get the baby among them so drunk he got terribly sick - this wariness changed in time as he learned about limits). Or the brothels (it would be a year and some change before he lost his virginity - he was a bit of a late bloomer in that respect, but once he did, well...we see what happened). He spent most of his time in the markets and on the beaches in the camps and on the docks because this was a new way of life. Not the sailing, but piracy in and of itself, and he was determined to be a shadow until he figured it out.He ended up buying new clothes he outgrew in six months, because with a proper diet and regular sleep he shot up to over six feet (originally he was just shy of 6′2″ but age and work will lose a person inches - i say he’s six even but he’s just a smiiiidge over that now).

zzz= What time the character enjoys sleep or being awakeHe’s actually a fairly early riser, and he’ll usually turn in fairly late. And with his sleep patterns, he’ll have about an hour there where he’ll be awake in the middle of sleeping, so he typically gets between four and seven hours of sleep a night, depending how lucky he is. But early mornings and dusk are his favorite times of day - early mornings are about as quiet and peaceful as you can expect on a ship. Dusk is another day their way of life (and they themselves) have survived. And it’s also fairly peaceful, especially after a shift change and the deck lights go out. Low light levels before moonlight, apparently, that gloom that kind of settles in around everything, those are his favorites.(*^◇^)_旦 = What the character likes to eat and drinkEverything. Lmao, seriously, he’s not particularly picky (though he likes driving Elizabeth up the wall by turning his nose up at anything “healthy” she tries to push at him because he likes watching her get frustrated). He can’t afford to be very picky, not in canon. You eat what you’ve got. He tends to lean toward savory and spicy, though, he’d love a good modern curry. And that’s outside the obvious apples. Drink-wise, yes, there’s rum, but rum comes standard because it’s mixed in with the water. Outside of that, scotch and whisky are fine, he likes those plenty, and a decent wine here and there. One thing he won’t is vodka. He literally, honestly hates it.

The Ratway is easy enough to navigate, once a body knows all of its twists and turns. Even its less civilized inhabitants have learned to leave him alone, when he makes his way through; they've learned what the hood and cowl mean, and really, that's fine by him. It's been a long while since he's been down here, but the residents have a long memory, and he's not here on business, so a death would simply be unfortunate.
Well. He's not here on official business, at any rate.
There are times, of course, where he occasionally needs a fence. Things that don't belong to him simply find their way onto his person, and it would be a shame to keep them when he has no need of them. So it's here, as he makes his way down the stairs, through the door, in the wide, open, water-filled space, that he comes, to the Ragged Flagon, to be rid of them. But before he gets on with all of that:
"Mercer Frey, I heard you telling lies, mate." And a look around confirmed what he has heard is, indeed, true. "Rough patch is what you lot are calling it. Looks damned near dead in here to me." Says the assassin to the thief, like there's not simply loads of double meaning shoveled into that statement. "Rough patch, aye, the same way I suppose a giant hits a little hard."
