Where would Zeeâs general base be? (other than touring). I know itâs San Francisco most of the time and Gotham every once in a while. Cause she has shadowcrest (I think itâs in Gotham), her place in SF, & an apartment in Gotham (the curious abode of ZZ from that HQ story). Would you say sheâs from/grew up in the east coast or west?
I would just have her base be Shadowcrest itself, but I think Shadowcrest has a lot of really untapped potential that could be so fun to explore. So first and foremost the home of Zatanna and Zatara was originally in or outside Gotham/New York. There are some inconsistencies but early on, the majority of the time their mansion was in New York. So I would say she was born on the East coast.
It wasnât until Books of Magic that her home changed locations to San Francisco. Why is unclear, and this home doesnât resemble a mansion, it was a simple house. But after Books of Magic SF became the norm. And eventually SF became home to Shadowcrest as well.Â
Now, I think Shadowcrest should be a moving location. It was in New York when she was born but now is in San Fran as she enters her prime. And if DC were to give her an ongoing, a fun element/mystery could be the house spontaneously relocating. But it wasnât necessarily random, instead the house moved her to this new location for a reason. Kicking off a new arc/adventure.Â
I think this would a) make it so that the mansion can canonically have existed in both places, and b) help make her base of operations more unique. Everyone elseâs is stationary except for maybe the tower of fate which I believe normally lies in Salem. Most heroes are tied to one city. I think Zee should be tied to the road, like you say as a touring performer, but also as a play on Hecate the goddess of crossroads.Â
I also just enjoy the concept of her house being semi sentient, kinda like the houses secret and mystery respectively but less crazy. Thereâs also so much to do with the house being generationally passed down, and all the rooms and it being bigger on the inside. Her base, like a lot of aspects about her is just so underutilized and has so much story telling potential.Â
I need adventures centered inside and around it, about the mansion moving, The houses defenses and it being potentially dangerous to navigate, about who first used it and its history, or Zatara rediscovering it and his heritage. I need parallels drawn between the fortress of solitude and the batcave, how like for the worldâs finest, he base is a sanctuary and a culmination of those who cane before her. Toed to her past and her future potential. I could go on forever but Iâll stop here now.Â
Thanks for the ask!
(oh an P.S. I consider her other properties to be shadowcrest but just maybe in different forms or glamoured, or even places that Shadowcrest leads to of you open the right door. Is this canon, no, but like it should be lol)
Moon 0!
A calm start for our clan.
In other news:
Scalepaw and Moonchasm missed a bird, and Flurrywish found burdock root and ragwort.
Where was Zee born/raised? I know she lives in San Francisco but the wiki says she was born in NY, but also close to Arkham (isnt that in Gotham, though?) and that the Zatara mansion is in Gotham county too (Shadowcrest). That's so confusing! lol
Zatanna was born in NYC. Pretty much all of her childhood flashbacks indicate that she grew up on the road traveling from one place to the next with her father.
Her main base is Shadowcrest mansion. The place is magic so naturally it doesn't stay in the same spot and there is also the fact that Zee can just teleport there with her powers.
Besides that, her family owns a home in NYC where she was born (which was also destroyed the same issue it was introduced in) and her father owns a home in Gotham City as well. Most of the time, Zee is shown either staying in Shadowcrest mansion or various hotels/apartments ranging from ritzy glamorous hotels or really run down motels (the latter is more common in Nu52 era). I guess it depends on how much she makes each year as a performer.
Zatanna being born in NYC and "near Akham Asylum" was established in 'Justice League of America' #162 (cover date 1978):
Arkham Asylum was introduced in Batman #258 (1974).
Could the writer, Gerry Conway, have mixed up Gotham and New York?
Unlikely, since Gotham is mentioned in the issues prior to this one and the one that followed and it's treated as a separate place.
Thus, the only conclusion is that the NYC of the DCU also has an Arkham Asylum totally separate from the Arkham in Gotham. This has never been brought up again.
It is possible that the writer, Gerry Conway, intended for Zatanna to be born in Gotham but later changed it to NYC but kept the Arkham reference. He is on Tumblr, you could ask him but I doubt he remembers the details of a story he wrote 40 years ago.
I should note that Arkham itself is also a reference to HP Lovecraft so the Asylum always had supernatural connotations.
Either way, at the end of the day, Zatanna was born in NY, grew up on the road and currently lives in San Francisco.

I saw @tzigone had a question abt this in Zatannaâs tag and I also wanna keep this for my own reference to SO
Letâs Talk About Shadowcrest!
The first time the Zatara home is mentioned, but not yet Named, is in Justice League of America #162!
Here we get a vague location of ânear Arkham Asylumâ, which by extension implies that Zatanna grew up in Gotham.
Now, I havenât quite made my way through the 80s/90s as far as Zee reading goes, but my guess is that this isnât touched on very much throughout those decades, given that a quick google search doesnât give much info.
However, in the early 00s, we do get another round of confirmation that Zee grew up in Gotham and was childhood friends with Bruce (in Detective Comics #833) and shortly after, in Countdown #37, Zee introduces Mary Marvel to her home, finally giving us the Name:
Now, I havenât read all the way through Countdown just yet, but this issue and the following (#36 bc Countdown was published in reverse order) have Mary and Zee exploring the mansion and getting into some trouble. There could be quite a bit of Hidden Lore about the house that wasnât explored quite as much later in Zatannaâs solo series!
(Something of note, in both Countdown and Zeeâs Solo, itâs mentioned that she prefers living at her home in San Francisco, likely bc she still sees Shadowcrest as her fathers estate and that gives her grief. OR bc the House has Other Secrets đ)
So to answer the second part of the Original Question Posed: The cool thing about Magic Mansions in the DCU, is they always have something Odd about them! Wintersgate, while in a fixed located in Washington DC, is detached from time and can deposit itâs residents in many places throughout history. The House of Mystery/Secrets also seem to have minds of their own and enjoy being detached from any particular place in the multiverse. So itâs entirely possible that Shadowcrest, when given a vague âhundred year historyâ, likely has some of its own tricks up its proverbial sleeves! Again, Iâll have to actually sit down and read Countdown to be sure though! đ

Staring into Raven's room at Shadowcrest, Zatanna stayed rooted to the spot. Her sapphire eyes focused on her daughter, older than the previous memory but far, far more distressed. The motherâs throat dried up as she noted the sundress that her daughter donned, the stripes practically infamous in their little family.
And at the sight of that sugar-cookie colored dress, the magician felt true dread at the thought of where a memory would take her.
Hearing the quiet sniffles, she forced herself to take a deep breath, in through the nostrils, out through her mouth. Zee felt as the lingering heat on her back intensified and took a step forward, shutting the door behind her. The room dimmed as the light ceased, lit only by the dull gloom peeking in from the rain-filled clouds outside. The mystic took a step forward, quickly lifting her foot back up as a board creaked.
This version of her daughter didnât seem to notice her intrusion. Â
The Doâs and Donâts of the town, Shadowcrest.
If youâre between Edgewater and Riva, come take a peek at our little town. Weâre small, but boast some of the best a small town can possibly offer. Hereâs a small set of Doâs and Don'ts to make everything all the more enjoyable for you and anyone you take along.
DOâs:
â Tip your barista. She's had a rough time, no matter how wide her smile.
â Ask before petting any dogs, especially if you don't see an owner.
â If fishing or crabbing, toss back the first thing you catch. It's polite.
â Wave hello to old man Mcbride if you see him. He's usually surrounded by cats.
â Ask around enough, and you can find a fun rave near the warehouses. Bring Kandi.
â Jojo's Diner has the best coconut cream pie in town. Coffee's a little weak, though.
â If your dog slips its lead and runs into the woods, it'll be home by midnight, unharmed. Promise.
â Feel free to toss bird seed in the park. We need the poor things to readjust to normal food.
â Gazebo Three is the smallest gazebo in the park, but it's plenty... entertaining.
DONâTs:
â The town pool has been closed for decades. Ignore the open gate.
â Don't go near the bay during storms. Ever.
â Related to the above point- Don't chase rabbits, no matter their color.
â Don't go near the gas station across from Acker Auto & Tow. It is closed.
â If old man Mcbride asks if you want to see his cat, Tigress, politely decline, and leave.
â Don't mind the dark shape in the woods. It's not after you.
â The person at raves wearing a wolf skull mask is not fond of questions.
â If your dog slips its lead, DO NOT follow it into the woods. It WILL return to you by midnight if you let it be. Promise.
â The island with a small cabin is private property.
All these tips aside, I know youâll enjoy your visit, however short or long it may be. Thanks again for stopping by. If you have any concerns, pop by my office downtown. Iâll help you out as best I can.
Warm regards,
Mayor Peter A. Gruakamm
