Hi you! I think Iād NEVER ship someone with Meta-douche, ever! Iām a horrible person, but not that horrible! ;PI ship you with Gabriel.(and, nope, brevity hasnāt found me yet⦠give her my address, pliz? Also, this came out unusually fluffy and spiritual, donāt ask me whyā¦)āPfff⦠you canāt.āāOh, well, maybe. But try me.āāNo, really, Lissy, thatās not humanly possible. Learn when to take a NO, kiddo!āGabriel looks at you and you wonder, not for the first time, how something so old, so impossibly ancient and powerful can manage to look like a five years old about to throw a tantrum. Knowing him a bit, and you can say you do, itās probably because he is about to do exactly that, but you are serious about this. He needs to be reminded that, sometimes, simple, plain humans like you can still surprise an angel. And something tells you you can do this, something that you canāt really pinpoint something that you felt the first time you met him, when you realized immediately that the guy in the corner, watching your neighborās apartment spill cats from every door and window, was not just another casual bystander.Your neighbor was a horrible, petty man, you knew it, your family knew it, and everyone hated him, but no one had anything tangible against him. You knew it had been him who had gotten the two girls evicted from 23b, just because he didnāt like them and just because he had the power to do that, you knew it was him who kept refusing to vote in favor of that access ramp for Mrs Klein, just because it would have forced him to park his car on the other side of the street, and you were absolutely sure it had been him who had left around the poisoned food that had almost killed two of the stray cats who lived around the block. So, when his apartment had been invaded by dozens of cats, from big ginger monsters to cute grey kittens, apparently coming out of nowhere, you had found it just perfect, really. Even better when animal control had come and all the cats had been gone, but the house⦠Oh youād seen the house: it was a mess, every surface scratched and ruined beyond recognition, and the only thing that had been left intact, open but unscratched under the bed, was a box filled with documents.Your neighbor had been arrested for financial fraud and no one had found a plausible explanation for the incredible cats invasion. No one but you.Ā You had watched the strange man in the corner of the hallway smile, and you had known immediately something was different with him.āSo.. how did you do that, exactly?āIt was not a usual icebreaker, but it had worked.Ā You like him better when heās just the Trickster, because when he gets all high and mighty and Gabrielesque, sometimes you really want to punch him, hard and fast, even if that would end you up with a broken hand. So you learnt how to take him down in other ways, get him to admit yourāre right, for example, works wonders for his ego (and, admittedly, for yours too). This time is different. This time you could lose more than him, if youāre wrong, but something tells you everything is going to be⦠Not fine, great.āIf thatās not possible, then itās not. But I tell you I can.āāItās not a joke. Youāll die.āāNo I wonāt.āIt goes on a while, he knows you, and you know him, and itās hard to argue when you only have your strange feeling as a proof, but in the end you trick him into a dead end, and the argument is yours. In front of you thereās Garbriel, just your Gabriel, and he looks sad, almost defeated. Then something happens around him, there is light all around him and around you and his eyes find yours, gold against blue, like an anchor, a fixed point in a maelstrom of power and the smell of rain, and gold and a perfect G major and⦠You canāt see, not really, not anymore, but it doesnāt hurt, and even without sight you can sense his eyes (are there⦠how many of those does he have now?) on you and they are filled with something that looks like genuine surprise and joy, and something else, something that fills you with warmth and just a little bit of fear.Itās over in just a moment, just a heartbeat, but itās enough. You saw him.He saw you.And itās not like you donāt appreciate his human form, you have come to love his voice, his nose, the way he walks and the way his hand traces your face sometimes, like heās trying to read you, memorize you, no, you love his vessel, but you finally saw him. The real Gabriel, and right now you canāt tell if itās beautiful or horrifying, if heās light or fire, but heās what you felt in the hallway, all those months ago, and the missing piece of the puzzle, and the final page of your favourite book, and all the tears and laughter in the world.Ā He runs to you, his hand on your cheek, as always.āLissy, please tell me youāre okā¦āāYouāre ok.āĀ He laughs, but itās short and, for once, not mocking. You can see concern in his eyes now, but itās washing away quickly.āYou can see me. Thatās⦠Lissy, I think youāre a vessel. One of mine, I mean.āāAnd I just think Iām simply special, thank you.āāNo, really, you probably are a vessel, andā¦āāAnd youāre not thinking of that, I hope, because-āāNo!āGabriel wraps you in the tightest hug he ever gave you and you are startled, for a moment.āNo, I would never, everā¦ā You almost miss the next sentence, spoken soft, against the top of your head.Ā āIād die before I lose you.āFor once, you donāt know how to answer.
