I watched the second episode I'm not okay at all this was mean and evil and all my prayers ever were answered and I'm in a mental asylum. In anyway I shall do my duty and. Talk about how insanely and wonderfully morally ambiguous and conflicting sfv!Sam is so if you will, characters only talking from here on out. Like until I glaze the goat Samuei for having great writing on this guy I just NEED to Do This.

Let's just let's take a trip and start talking from where it all began for this poor poor guy. Sam was raised mostly by his sister and didn't really know his parents iirc. horrible start, I know. The eldest sibling parenting is oh lord probably where it all started. Ruby, Sam's older sister, was in charge of the food source/farm of the town they lived in. From how Sam talks about her, she was very reliable and trustworthy. Ruby held an important position so people listened to her while Sam was just the dumb little brother of Ruby! From Ep1 we see Sam helping Ruby with harvesting potatoes. You wouldn't know this since this part was cut from Ep1 but Sam also said the same near exact thing about beeswax candles that Ruby told him. He didn't credit Ruby iirc but like it was from himself. He keeps comparing himself to Ruby on how dependable and capable he is. Sam actually says something on point about this after realizing how vampirisn is good for him, "I don't have to live in her shadow anymore" and OH BOY. Through these little things and even little bits I didn't even mention, Sam has tried alot—almost every opportunity—to be like Ruby by copying what she used to do. Sam looked up to Ruby, yes of course he did that's his older sister who raised him and taught him literally everything- well mostly everything. Scathing glare at the Evil and Intimidating horse. But at the same time, Ruby was always the better one who could do everything he couldn't and do everything better than he could. Long story short, Sam was envious. Ruby was always more important than him and better than him, he wanted to be like that. I'm pretty sure he actually wanted to be more. I think the envy targeted at Ruby was realized later than the time Sam was helping Ruby pick potatoes since at that time he wanted to be special and important in his own way after seeing Ruby. Sam was stopped by Ruby from doing anything reckless to try and be anything more. The best Ruby could allow him was to help the mayor build some bridge and that didn't really fit in his horizon of things at the time. Sam was also seen as dumb and no one listened to him and he had no friends besides his own sister... MY SHAYLAAAAA- Worse things happen to him I should say that later LOL he's said it a bunch of times how he was never welcomed or listened to back in his hometown. Nobody to trust, nobody to call a friend besides his own sister and I'm pretty sure Sam said that he always had to run things through Ruby to even get anything he says heard.

So. To sum it all up. Sam was lonely, he felt insignificant and stupid since that's how he was treated and told which was opposite to how his sister Ruby was treated which is why he was jealous of her and what she had despite loving her as family. Sam didn't have anyone else to be a friend who listened to him and taught him things. Sam tried his best to be like Ruby but he failed... So what happens to a guy who feels alone, disliked by everyone, meant to be someone important but always trapped from doing something significant? Simply enough, Bad shit. Real bad shit. BAD FUCKING SHIT. And by that? I mean a mayor. FUCKING MAYOR- and I actually have a theory! With much proof! I hope I'm right!

So in the scene in Ep1 with the potato harvesting where Ruby says that Sam could help the mayor build a bridge. Aha. That happened. I think Sam would just do it because it's the most it's allowed and that's where he talked to the mayor and had like the closest relationship besides Ruby and where he would receive a proposition from the mayor or well what started that. The deal's details we don't know but I'm just gonna make it out from what we know. I think the Mayor at first heard Sam out, maybe he was ranting about how his sister never let him do anything. So the Mayor might've taken that chance to ask him for a personal favour and do something to incriminate a townsfolk of witchcraft, ofcourse not bluntly but that's what it would end up doing and Sam would find out and agree after the Mayor also agrees to let him and sister live if he's able to do everything right. Judging from Ep2's flashback, the mayor also taught Sam what to do and how to do it probably? I mean that evil bearded man literally tells Sam how to manipulate people AND USES SAM AS AN EXAMPLE. "Just like you, Sam." DO YOU WANT TO DIE YOU SADMILKMAN WANNABE AAUUYYGHRGRHSGYSGEHHSGSB not the only offense he's done to me. (The mayor) He also tells Sam that if Ruby ever cared about him then she would leave with him. WHICH LIES I TELL YOU. Ruby cares about him AND the town but when Sam helped the mayor she HATES for conducting witch hunts she was so mad and betrayed. Hashtag justice for Ruby even tho I'm aboutta make a case against her cause in a sec LOL We know where this goes ofcourse from Ep2's flashback 🔥 but a line from there is something that. Oohhhhgdsvfahahwjjsgsjsbv you evil evil EVIL evil. Very evil. Positively. Evil. Ahem to quote: "They didn't blame the architect who built the bridge, they blamed the storm that toppled it." This made me explode actually. While the mayor says this about Ruby because she chose to stay as in I'm assuming Sam being the architect who set up evidence for people to believe Ruby is a witch and Ruby as the bridge that got toppled by the storm which I'm guessing is the mob that cheers for witch burning WHICH (witch) is what Ruby "chose". (I couldn't help myself-) So Sam isn't to blame for Ruby dying for her own choice. BUT. While that may be what that wretched mayor is saying I have another interpretation. Sam. Sam is the bridge. The storm is the Mayor. The architect is Ruby. Let Me Explain.

So as I have been saying and have said. Sam was raised by Ruby because of their absent parents and he was treated as less than his sister who held an important position. Sam wanted to have a special position like that and have friends and be looked up to like he did with Ruby. Ruby didn't let him take any action because he's reckless and she didn't want Sam to risk his life or get into trouble. Ruby was the one person Sam could trust and talk to and call a friend, she was his only friend and family. Ruby is the architect who made Sam feel inferior and trapped in the mindset of always being 'lesser'. Then there was the community who didn't reach out to Sam to become friends and listen to his ideas. I don't know the reason but that played a part too.

The Mayor was the one who took this lonely boy who felt insignificant and gave him what he wanted. Someone to listen to him, give him a special position and give him and his sister the opportunity to leave the town. All in exchange of assisting in killing townspeople using witch hunts. The mayor made Sam kill and manipulate people to save the one person he cared for who he thought cared for him too. So he then killed her too.

We could blame The Mayor for making Sam assist in murders and manipulating people, but it was Ruby alongside the community who made Sam feel alone and unable to be someone important.
