The second chapter of my fic, sfumato, is up! sfumato told a story of a young king called Iishiro (U1146) and a young painter called Ai (AE3803). They met because Iishiro commissioned Ai a potrait of himself. They got to spend time together and feelings began to blossom from there.
Itâs currently on chapter two out of four. Do check it out if you have time!

Quick edit for my fic, sfumato. I should be writing the fanfiction but instead I got myself distracted ...
Edit: Got some world building under the cut.
Quote from an art historian:
âUntitledâ was another one of her self-potrait during her stay at White Palace. It depicted the same scene as âA Woman Waiting In Darkness (A Self Potrait)â, although she wore a different set of clothes. It was deduced that this painting was painted long after the first one as a recalling. But some argue that this could be the unfinished version of the other one because Akagawa usually gave titles to her works.
Whatâs interesting in Lady Akagawaâs painting was that she used flowers to convey a secret message. It was interesting because floriography was not popular at least until another century. The evidence of her usage of floriography was in her those two self potraits where she painted herself with camellia in her hair. It was deduced that the camellia was given to her by King Iishiro, as a symbol that the king hold a romantic feeling for her.
âSecret Saibou Master Archerâ &Â âSaibou Master of Coins After Meetingâ by Ai Akagawa, 17xx
From the same universe as my fanfic, sfumato. Read it here
So, I was busy for the last couple of weeks (from work, the gay and european video, and another animatic Iâm working on). Sfumato will be on hiatus for next couple of weeks, but I can still do some world-building because I love doing that more than writing the fic itself. That and Iâm a trash for Mem and B
(I will finish sfumato donât worry guys).
Below the cut is some background to these two dorks in this AU. Also the version when the two pictures was combined
Note from an art historian:
We previously thought Lady Akagawa stopped painting once she became the royal consort of the king. But we thought wrong. Recently we uncovered some of her works and it turns out she didnât stop painting at least until a few years until her death.
After her marriage, her painting consisted of series of potraits from her husbandâs ranks in the palace. This was probably due to her increased responsibility as a queen thus she rarely had time to paint complex painting.
A few years after her marriage she painted these two paintings and it looked like she painted it at the same time. The man âSaibou Master of Coins After Meetingâ was a member of her husbandâs Crown Council, Sir Mamoru Keiichi, and the man âSecret Saibou Master Archerâ was a captain in Saibou Army, âBâ[1]. Although the two paintings contain the word master, only âMaster of Coinsâ was a true title. Master of Coins was a rank bestowed to the Crown Council member responsible to oversee the crown and kingdomâs currency. While âMaster Archerâ was Captain Kazuhiko âBâ Benjiâs nickname for his provision in using a bow (legend said he was invisible once he wielded his bow).
We have talked about Akagawaâs use of floriography in her works here and these paintings are another example of that. Both men had a pink rose in their background. What interest us is Akagawaâs take on this flower. After all, pink rose can be applied to both romantic and platonic feelings. Most historians took it as a symbol of their friendship. The two of them were known to be close as stated in Mamoru Keiichiâs personal records. But recently it came to light that the paintings were originally one and if they were combined then it will produce this.
Another interesting thing to point out is the name of both paintings. If we were to take both of these menâs âtitlesâ off, it will produce âSecretâ and âAfter Meetingâ. Was this a hidden message placed by the Queen herself? After all: 1.) It was no secret that Kazuhiko is called Master Archer by his peers 2.) There was no indication that Sir Mamoru was off from a meeting (the title simpy doesnât make any sense) and 3.) Both of the paintings were originally one
We might never know the real answer until we find more records. But it is an interesting thought to dwell on.
A Woman Waiting In Darkness (A Self Potrait) by Ai Akagawa, 17xx
A companion piece to my fanfiction, sfumato. Itâs an AU where Ai (AE3803) is a court painter to the king of Kingdom of Saibou, Iishiro (U1146). They spend time together (because she has to paint him duh), and over the months they begin to fall in love.
Currently thereâs only one chapter out of four but do check it out u3u
But when writing that fic an idea suddenly popped up into my brain and it went kinda like this:
Brain: Yo since Ai is a painter why donât we draw her painting?
Me: Thatâs a good idea, brain!!!!
Narrator: It was not, a good idea
But since I canât draw shit I decided to do a photo manipulation instead. Pretty happy with the outcome. Iâm planning to do more because itâs so much fun \(=u=)/
