Week 1- 8th to 12th June, 2015
My internship started on a good note because i arrived at the time the Rainbow project had their capacity building/ refresher course workshop for the operators and helpers of the project. Operators are the people who are incharge of running the different Supplementary feeding programme (SFPs) centers while helpers assist the operators to carry out activities. The workshop gave me the opportunity to get the overview of the whole project in just five days. The purpose of the workshop was to go through the activities and challenges experienced in order to come up with the best practices for the SFPs The workshop was opened by Dr. Giulia, the coordinator of the project. The following were the topics and activities covered on each day.
Day 1- 8/06/15
Ground rules were set the first day and the following topics were covered;
1. Oral consent and confidentiality in terms of client information was emphasized
2. The importance of referals ( to identify where the majority of children being admitted to the SFPs are coming from).
3. Admission criteria : 1st priority is given to children with a red or yellow mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) and have bilateral pitting oedema (Grade +, ++ and Grade +++. Their second priority is children that are underweight (low weight for age). Children that qualify to be admitted should be between 6 months and 59 months of age, have no medical complications and should have a good appetite.
4. Discharge criteria: Children are discharged from the SFPs if they have green MUAC (those admitted with a red or yellow MUAC), have no Oedema, have attained 15 % weightgain for those admitted for underweight and should have no medical complications with a good appetite.
Key messages on all these topics were developed.
Day 2- 9/06/15
Day two started with a recap of the key messages developed on the first day and then went through case studies on nutrition counselling and the registration process at fist admission. Empasis was made to support and promote HIV counselling and testing. Participants and i took part in a role play on nutrition counselling in order to find out the feeding practices of chlldren.
Day 3- 10/06/15
Day 3 started with developing key messages on Nutrition counselling and HIV counselling and testing. we then looked at :
1. conditions that require refering to the clinic
These include; Red MUAC plus Oedema- all grades, if child is losing weight or weight is static, not gaining weight, medical complications like lack of appetite, malaria, diarrhoea, fever, cough, vomitting etc.
2. Extra cases
These are malnourished children between the gar of 5 and 13 years old. they should be refered from the clinic or hospital and are kept for up to 3 months. They are given 2 kgs of HEPS and are monotored by the clinic
3. Home visits and health talks
Health talks are given every week by either the nurses from the clinic or by the helpers at the centres. Home visits are done at first admission to assess the situation at home and when the child is absent from the weekily meetings.
Day 4- 11/06/15
Day 4 started with a recap of the key messages on health talks, referals to the clinic and hospitals, home visits and extra cases. we then looked at cooking demontrations in which we had a pracical session on how to cook HEPS for one child and 18 children
Day 5- 12/06/15
On day 5, we recaped what we had learnt from day 1 to day 4. I then introduced myself again as asked by my supervisor and informed the house why i was here and what i was doing. The workshop ended with a prayer.
I will share some of the pictures for the workshop
Module 13 internship
Hello! My name is Zipporah Gloria Kamaloni and i welcome you to my blog. I am a student doing a bachelors degree in Global Nutrition and Health specialising in Public Health Nutrition and Food Policy. This blog will be about my second internship at the Rainbow Project, under the Pope John 23rd Association. The project is a large-scale model of care that caters for the needs of orphans and vulnerable children and has been in operation since 1998 in Ndola District, Copperbelt province, Zambia. It runs a community-based programme that operates through the Supplementary Feeding Programmes (SFPs) which is the nutritional component of the care mentioned above. This is done using High Energy Protein Supplement (HEPS) and other food products during a three month rehabilitation programme. Other activities in the SFP nutrition programme include anthropometric measurements and recording, cooking demonstrations, meals together, home visitation and health talks on various nutrition and health topics like hygiene, HIV/ AIDS. The SFPs are run by local partner organisations and coordinated by professional figures working in cooperation with District medical offices. In addition, it works hand in hand with Arthur Davison Children Hospital; the only children's hospital in Zambia (also based in Ndola) in rehabilitating children that are discharged from the hospital and are in need of supplementary feeds. The aim of the SFPs is to treat moderate Acute malnutrition without complications thereby preventing severe acute malnutrition. It also gives long-term sustenance to recovery from SAM after out-patient or in-patient treatment. So for the next 3 months i will share my experiences with the project and will later on link them to my bachelor thesis.
