Over Seventy-one Chadian soldiers killed fighting Boko Haram

Seventy-one Chadian soldiers have been killed and 416 injured in two-and-a-half months’ fighting Boko Haram, the Chadian army said on Friday.

Startled, Shael turned to look at who’d just come up behind her. “What do you mean?”

Delany rolled her eyes, arms folding over her chest. “The whole ‘I’m just an innocent elf that knows nothing’ thing ya got goin’ on here.” She motioned vaguely at the elf’s person. “C’mon, small fry. I won’t sell ya out if ya drop the act right now.”

Raising an eyebrow and mimicking the bartender’s position, Shael offered a single-shouldered shrug. “I’m half human, basically. I adopt human traits and skills rather quickly. No one here actually knows that—except maybe the Lady—and a lot of Earth really does intrigue me. The best way to find things out is to act like the naïve little thing people expect me to be.” She gave the brunette a slightly crooked grin, wiggling her fingers slightly.

“Why do ya do that?” Delany gestured at the elf’s fingers, grey-green eyes curious but piercing.

The elf’s grin straightened some and she flexed her entire hand. “I can feel some remnants of the power I had on Alia Terra, but the magical energies of Earth are so different . . . It doesn’t work the same way.”

With a grin of her own now, the brunette beckoned the Elven woman closer. “So what’s the true Shael Noroeth like then? I know you’re not all innocence and naïveté like everyone else seems to think.” At the blonde’s puzzled look, her grin widened. “I’m a bartender. It’s practically in my job description to be able to tell this stuff.”

Shael laughed—a sound that was loud for an elf, but quiet for a human. “I’m a smartass. That is what it’s called here, right?” She grinned again, blue eyes bright. “My temper is even shorter than I am; I lack what I think most people call a . . . brain-to-mouth filter—a working one, at least—and apparently I’m an even better actress than I thought.” She shrugged, heading over to the bar to sit down. “I once almost killed half a village because I lost my temper.”

Eyebrows almost disappearing into her hairline, Delany moved behind the bar and leaned over it—getting as close to the Elven woman as she could without being conspicuous to others. “Tell me more.”

With that, Shael went into a description of what had happened a mere few years before she’d tripped into Earth—how she’d nearly destroyed half her father’s village with her fire, about the way they’d all given her a wide berth for almost an entire two years after the incident.
