I see two paths for this AU, both pertaining to the song "Stories" (link) from the Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas movie
Option 1: Jason ends up in the Infinite Realms, he's under contract-somehow- to King Phantom. A benevolent king that others gaze at sadly, only informing the young revenant that King Phantom used to smile more often, used to display more human tendencies once upon a time. And even though King Phantom is kind, aloof, seemed to radiate a certain sadness, he tended to keep everyone at arm's length. The only one thus far who's managed to get close is Jason. The King excuses to discuss the contract to break it, but Jason thinks he missed the living plane. Even though he acts big and tough, can back it up, and has a few dozen kills under his belt, Jason is a romantic at heart. And he wants to help the King find happiness again, to smile again, and somehow that leads to him creating a story for King Phantom. ~ Option 2: Danny moves to Gotham (get creative for this bit, everyone has good ideas of why Danny moves to Gotham), and he was going to live in Crime Alley when he feels it's already been claimed. And the whole place just- Gotham in general radiated corruption, it's ambient ecto not as healthy as it could be and there were curses acting as chains and collars around the city. But Crime Alley had the thick of it and held the most rage and sorrow he's ever felt. He finds someplace to live/rent and he finds the person who's claimed the territory on a random stroll to a coffee shop. The guy has a tough exterior, kinda reminded him of Dash during his punk/goth phase in middle school he acts like he never had, he gruffly greeted some kids who pawed and begged for him to get them cake pops, he made sure to tip the poor kid behind the counter, and just- Well, Danny couldn't help but feel a purring affection. And so, begins an odd chase of sorts, similar to cat and mouse but he'd compare it better to a damn male bird trying to woo an unimpressed female bird. Like, he HAD a chance, but mister tall, big, and handsome with the deadliest thighs available obviously tried to act like he wasn't amused by Danny's attempts at wooing. He did get to know the guy though! Jason was pretty cool, even if he bullies him for being a 'shrimp'. But Danny could still feel the sadness within the man. There's anger, sure, but it's the anger of not being stood up for, of feeling replaced, of feeling like an outsider. And yeah, he's not good at writing, but....but Danny can try for him.
I’ve seen “kill your darlings” as a critique of Medrano’s work multiple times, and I don’t think I’ve seen a more apt criticism of Medrano’s entire workload. She cannot let ideas and characters go, even if they don’t really suit her story anymore, or even if they have been already KILLED OFF, in the case of Chaz.
Chaz fascinates me especially because he has never been a popular character even with Medrano’s own fanbase. So when he came back and started getting all this attention, it alienated even Medrano’s fanbase. Her unwillingness to let things go impacts even her own fanbase.
I think I would like to answer this in a slightly different way, because most people see "Kill your darlings" as literal "darlings" or characters, but that phrase is used for everything in narrative creation.
It's why I don't actually think "needed more time" is a valid critique. Limitations are inherent to the craft, if you needed more time, you could have given it more time. You give it more time by shaving down how much attention you are giving to other story beats and characters.
The skill and craft come from trying to get your story out in as whole a state as possible.
Think of it like trying to cut out a circle with some scissors. Chances are it will not be a perfect circle unless you make it a soulless template. It is always a little uneven. And you can keep trying to make it perfect, but the more you do the smaller the circle gets.
If you want to keep the circle as big as possible, you have to get creative.
Think of those popular shipping templates now. The circles with characters people thread lines between. That's also how a story works. The actual narrative of the story will be those threads. The threads are now representing character arcs, plot beats, and relationships. And the longer the thread is, the more time in the narrative it needs.
So the skill of writing comes with a mix of time management, proximity manipulation (giving characters a reason to be "closer" so their story can be simplified), thematic cohesion (this is another way to make characters closer; by giving them overlapping, mirrored, or identical themes), and a proper production pipeline.
Hypothetically, you can keep all your characters while still telling all their stories and having a relatively small circle when you know how to think of narrative like this.
And realizing when it isn't worth being perfect. That matters a whole lot too.
