A Jewish campaign group has warned Leicester City Council that a legal battle between the organisations could cost the authority£200,000.

Jewish Human Rights Watch (JHRW) has been granted permission for a judicial review of the council's decision to boycott any goods produced in illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

JHRW threatened threatened legal action against Swansea City Council which passed a similar motion.

The Welsh council has now offered to rescind its motion if JHRW withdraws from legal action because it does not wish to spend any more money on the matter.

Now the group has urged Labour-led Leicester City Council to do the same.

It has said the city council's motion, approved in 2014, was anti-Semitic - a claim denied by the authority.

In a letter to Lib Dem opposition councillor Nigel Porter JHRW said: "We write to encourage you to urge your council to follow Swansea's lead and rescind your council's motion as well.

"We were disappointed to receive a new witness statement from the city mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby, which indicates to us that Leicester intends to spend yet more taxpayer money defending this anti-Semitic motion.

"In the event of our success we will be asking for our costs to be paid by Leicester City Council.

"As matters stand we believe that the council will be liable to pay their own costs and ours in the region of £200,000."

The council has said: "The motion has never been a boycott of Israel by Leicester and is not an attack on the Jewish people. It relates specifically to illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank."
