Men of the London-based Guards regiments commonly posed for artists as a means of supplementing their low wages. i'm writing for my own enjoyment, & because there's a lot of stuff in the world that specifically kills my joy & in writing i have the power to do literally whatever i want, i'm simply excluding some things from my writing world. which is to say, i'm not gonna write anything i don't want to write. a short list that may get longer:
the pandemic. it isn't in my fictional world. i have to worry about it, they don't
politics & the end of the world. some umbrella terms there but like, specifically voting & presidents/world leaders or whoever. terrible laws or lack thereof. all of the wars. fucking climate change & mass extinctions? not in my threads. i am suffering it, i have to worry about it, i don't want to write about it. i want to write about these guys & their problems, like how to continue being human if you ate your loved ones, what to do if maybe your dad turns out to be the antichrist, digging into your sordid family history, & does is gay if man beautiful
"only places that exist" limitations. it's within my power to do so & so i have put them in a fictional location that does not exist in the real world. it's an accessible city & there are roads but none of that 8 lane shit, get out of my face. 4 lanes max. plenty of space for pedestrians. lots of little green spaces & benches & pavilions. there's public transport (maybe it's a little shitty but it's there) including a train or two that go to other places, and the city is surrounded by a fuckton of forest. because i want it there. & because it's important to the story. also maybe there's even a inland sea lake nearby, because i want it there
"it always has to be realistic all the time" limitations. fiction!! fantasy!!!! IT LIVES THROUGH ME. which is to say none of my characters are purely vanilla human except for malachi (although for the most part they can pass as such & outside of specific situations it won't even be in-your-face obvious), & while i'm perfectly happy to write slice of life i am also so down for supernatural shenanigans
