SET JET: TWISTER HILL FROM THE MOVIE “TWISTER” - Pilot Mound, Iowa. Remember that one scene in the 1996 blockbuster tornado-chasing Hollywood action film “Twister” where meteorologists Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt fail to release the Dorothy tornado sensors and they have a ridiculous relationship argument while the sensor modules scatter-about everywhere amidst the atmospheric chaos? They filmed that right here, on 130th Street near Pilot Mound - just past the Des Moines River. Folks call it “Twister Hill” or “Hail Hill” now and official signs aid in pointing out this small Iowa town’s cinematic claim-to-fame. ROBBIE IN THE BATTLESHIP GUNNER SEAT - Robbie Huntington mans the starboard anti-aircraft machine gun aboard the famous USS Alabama Battleship (BB-60). The Alabama served in numerous theaters of war - seeing heavy combat in a number of historic engagements against Japanese Forces in the South Pacific during World War II. The 1992 action film "Under Seige" was also filmed aboard this vessel that now operates as a floating museum. SET JET: CLOSE ENCOUNTER'S NEARY HOME AND STREET - The Neary House filming location from Steven Spielberg's UFO classic "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977) in Mobile, Alabama. In the film, actor Richard Dreyfuss' character, Roy Neary, threw plants and bricks through the window on the side of the house to make his alien-inspired Devil's Tower. In a deleted scene, he obsessively builds a UFO Observation Platform on the roof of the home. After Roy's family realizes that he is, perhaps, crazy - he is later left alone in the street when they split. SET JET: BLUES BROTHERS' ILLINOIS NAZI BRIDGE - North Pond Bridge, East Lagoon, Jackson Park in Chicago, Illinois. The North Pond Bridge - originally built (in the late-1880s) for the un-realized "Lake Park" - later became a well-travelled bridge when the Park was chosen as the site of the 1893 Chicago "World's Columbia Exposition" (The Chicago World's Fair). This remnant from The White City is best-known, in Modern Popular Culture, as being "The Illinois Nazi Bridge" - as it was used as a filming location for a classic scene from the 1980 comedy film "The Blues Brothers." In the movie, Jake (John Belushi) and Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) Blues, are blocked (from completing their "Mission from God") by a "Skokie-style" American Nazi Party demonstration on the bridge. After considering their hatred of "Illinois Nazis," the Blues Brothers drive the Bluesmobile into the Nazi rally and send them flying into the Pond - to the delight of Anti-Nazi Counter Protestors. THE HAUNTED OLD JOLIET PRISON - The Joliet Correctional Center - aka The Old Joliet Prison (1858) - in Joliet, Illinois. Closed in 2002, this abandoned prison complex now stands empty - except for, perhaps, some alleged ghosts and/or trespassing Urban Explorers. Other echoes from the past can also be seen from different angles, as this prison has been used as a location for a number of films and TV shows: most notable being the comedy classic "The Blues Brothers" (1980).
