Session Site Review: Sailor's Haven, Fire Island
In a new series we like to call “Session Sites", Gotham Verde will highlight some of the finest places a “verde connoisseur" can enjoy his or her favorite botanical treasure in the New York City area.
Session Site reviews are aimed toward anyone looking for a temporary escape from the manic lives that so many of us live here in New York — even if you don’t partake in the cheebah.
Therefore, our inaugural Session Site we would like to highlight is Sailor’s Haven, Fire Island. As a relatively unknown beach destination in Long Island, Sailor’s Haven has long been considered as a serene nautical treasure for so many who know about this well-kept secret.
As part of the Fire Island National Seashore, Sailor’s Haven is a $29 day-trip getaway from Manhattan, which is the home to the Sunken Forest, a Federally-protected maritime forest that greets each visitor on their way to the some of the most beautiful, yet untouched beaches of all of Long Island.
Aside from the restaurant in the nearby marina, there aren’t any concessions or groceries, so be sure to bring with you a picnic basket full of your favorite treats to munch on. But between the frequent songs of the black-capped chickadee and the occasional run-in with the white-tailed deer, a 2-hour trip to Sailor’s Haven with some Blue Hawaiian will send you straight to a place as peaceful as Hanalei Bay.
