ARTIST STATEMENT
The spirit of transformation powers everything I do, from my music and writing, to my performances, to my visual art.
I am bipolar, which means many things, one of which is that I have spent years navigating my way through the mental health care system, experiencing its cruelties and abuses first hand, all in the name of staying alive long enough to someday taste sanity. I have experienced things both internally and externally that anyone would want to forget. But I don't want to forget them-I want to transform them.
I examine the architecture of madness in all its ecstatic turmoil, as well as the perverse, dehumanizing, mysogynistic methods used to treat it throughout the ages. I joyfully demolish these constructs, then metamorphose the debris into empowering stories and statements, showing that nothing need ever be wasted, and there is beauty to be made of absolutely everything.
I utilize various techniques from sculptural mixed media to traditional paint on canvas to photography and even NFT's to take ownership of the trappings of my personal experiences-the hospital wristbands, the examination gowns, the prescription bottles and pills, objects that haunt the memories of millions-and experience them in a whole new way, not just for myself but for every viewer who has glimpsed the darkness and desires not to run, but to become empowered by it.
